Possibility of funnel clouds in southwestern Manitoba
Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a special weather statement for southwestern Manitoba, due to favourable conditions for funnel clouds. Uploaded Aug. 9, 2025. (Environment and Climate Change Canada) Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a special weather statement for southwestern Manitoba, warning that conditions are favourable for the development of funnel clouds throughout the day. A similar condition yesterday led to a few reports of funnel clouds in Saskatchewan and it appears to be more favourable for today, the agency said. 'These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms,' the statement reads. 'This rotation is normally not a danger near the ground, but there is a chance it could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.' ECCC notes the landspout tornadoes usually do not cause significant damage but can still be dangerous - strong enough to topple trees, damage roofs or toss debris short distances. If conditions worsen, the agency says it will issue tornado watches or warnings as needed. Residents are advised to monitor local forecasts and be prepared to take shelter if a warning is issued.

Environment and Climate Change Canada said a storm on Wednesday brought funnel clouds to parts of Manitoba. Environment and Climate Change Canada said a storm on Wednesday brought funnel clouds to parts of Manitoba. Several reports of funnel clouds and golf ball-sized hail have been received by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) as a storm made its way through the province Wednesday evening. Kean Kokolsky, a meteorologist with ECCC, told CTV News that a storm north of Winnipeg tracked to near Dugald, Man., resulting in funnel cloud sightings. 'We can't confirm any touchdowns at this time,' said Kokolsky. 'An investigation will have to take place into whether there was an actual touchdown or not. And we'll have to gather some reports from the eyewitnesses and the public to see if there was any.' Tornado warnings were issued in several municipalities Wednesday, including the RM of Rockwood, RM of St. Andrews, RM of St. Clements, RM of West St. Paul, RM of East St. Paul and the RM of Springfield. Weather system Dugald Manitoba A weather system in Dugald, Man., on Aug. 6, 2025. (Submitted) Kokolsky said reports of up to golf ball-sized hail were received in Stonewall, Man. He said the storm should leave the province this evening and is tracking toward the Ontario border. 'Into the evening here, as they approach the Ontario border, the severe threat should diminish.' The southeast corner of the province remains under a severe thunderstorm warning, while many areas in the province, including Winnipeg, are under a severe thunderstorm watch.

Funnel clouds possible across central, southern Sask. today
Funnel clouds photographed by Scott Heidel between the central Saskatchewan communities of Bladworth and Kenaston. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a special weather statement warning of possible funnel clouds in central and southern Saskatchewan on Monday. Both Regina and Saskatoon are included in the advisory on ECCC's website. According to ECCC, funnel clouds that may develop on Monday are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. ECCC said the weak rotation is not usually a danger near the ground but there is a chance a weak landspout tornado could develop. 'If conditions become more favourable for the development of landspout tornadoes, watches and warnings will be issued,' the weather service said. Landspout tornadoes do not usually cause significant damage but can still be dangerous and strong enough to topple trees, damage roofs or toss debris short distances, ECCC said. Current watches and warnings can be seen here.

Funnel clouds, deluge of rain reported during Manitoba storm
A bolt of lightning appears in the sky over Sperling, Man. on June 7, 2025. (Ken Russell) Manitoba got a much needed spring downpour over the weekend. According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), a low pressure system brought anywhere from 20 to 40 mm over a period of 36 hours starting overnight Saturday. Winnipeg recorded about 19 mm at The Forks, while closer to 10 to 15 mm fell in the Whiteshell. Similar totals were reported in Dauphin and Swan River, with about 15 mm of rain. However, precipitation was not quite so plentiful in the wildfire-ravaged north where it is sorely needed. The weather agency said only about 2 mm was recorded in Flin Flon, but other areas in the northwest noted a good deal more – about 15 mm worth, particularly in the Churchill area. Meanwhile, the storm produced two confirmed funnel clouds – in Steinbach and Gimli on Sunday afternoon. As a result, ECCC issued a special weather statement Sunday for much of the province, warning conditions were favourable for the development of funnel clouds, namely weak landspout tornadoes. ECCC said there is no indication the funnel clouds touched down or caused any damage. 'These are quite a common occurrence at times with single cell thunderstorms,' said ECCC meteorologist Stephen Berg. - With files from Thandi Vera
