Vedan booked for rape after woman alleges breach of promise

Kochi: Police have registered a rape case against rapper Hirandas Murali, popularly known as Vedan, based on a complaint from a woman that he sexually abused her after promising to marry her. The alleged abuse took place a couple of years ago, police said. City police commissioner Putta Vimaladitya told the media that the investigation was in its initial stages and no notice had been served to the rapper yet. He said, according to the complainant, there had been some financial transactions between her and Vedan. "We need to verify all allegations. We also need to speak to those whose names have been mentioned in the complaint. We will take further steps after that," he said. The complainant approached the deputy commissioner of police (Kochi City) on Wednesday night, following which Thrikkakara police registered an FIR after recording her statement as one of the locations where the alleged abuse occurred falls under its jurisdiction. The woman is learned to have decided to file a complaint after coming across a similar experience allegedly shared by another woman. Vedan had earlier faced allegations under the MeToo movement. Meanwhile, the complainant's counsel, Vimala Binu, said her client had faced threats after proceeding with the case and a police complaint was filed in this regard. She has not raised concerns about his politics, ideology or songs. Her complaint pertains to a personal crisis she experienced and her privacy should be respected, Binu said, alleging that several people had forcibly entered the complainant's home and issued threats over the phone. The lawyer told the media that the complainant required police protection and she had approached the court in this regard. The media reports on Thursday had revealed private details. She is a survivor and the media should respect her privacy. Any details in the complaint that could compromise her privacy should not be reported, she said. The complaint explains the reason for the delay in approaching police. She was undergoing treatment due to mental stress and the evidence to back this has been handed over to police, Binu said. In April 2025, Hill Palace police arrested Vedan along with eight friends after allegedly recovering 6gm of ganja from an apartment near Vyttila. He was later arrested by the forest department after a leopard-tooth pendant was found in his possession, which he claimed was a gift from a fan. He was released on bail in both cases.

Penang cops seize over 112kg of ganja worth RM3.72m, arrest four in two Bukit Mertajam raids

GEORGE TOWN, July 24 — Penang police arrested four men, including a Vietnamese national, and seized 112.1 kilogrammes of ganja worth RM3.72 million in two raids carried out in Bukit Mertajam from Tuesday to Wednesday. Acting Penang police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said a team from the state Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) launched an operation from 10am on Tuesday until 3am yesterday, resulting in the arrest of four men aged between 31 and 39. 'In the first raid, police arrested two men in a hotel room and another man in the hotel lobby, who acted as a 'transporter'. An inspection uncovered a canvas bag containing 9,232 grams of ganja and 4,238 grams of ganja buds,' he said at a press conference at the Penang contingent police headquarters today. He added that, following interrogation and intelligence gathered, police arrested a Vietnamese man in Seberang Jaya and brought him to a nearby homestay, which was used by the syndicate as a drug storage facility for smuggling and distribution. He said that during the inspection of the homestay, police seized 105 packages of ganja buds weighing 97.7 kilogrammes. Investigations revealed that the syndicate had been renting the condominium-type unit since last week for RM2,800 a month. Based on investigations, Mohd Alwi said the syndicate sourced its supply of ganja buds from international drug trafficking networks in neighbouring countries, smuggling them into Malaysia via land routes for distribution in Penang and Kuala Lumpur. He said the man acting as a 'transporter' was paid between RM3,000 and RM4,000 for each delivery, and is believed to have completed two trips before being arrested. 'Intelligence indicates that the syndicate has been active since last March. We are now actively tracking down the mastermind and other members of the network, who are believed to still be in the state,' he added. Police also seized RM1,300 in cash and three vehicles — a Toyota Alphard, a Honda City, and a Yamaha Y16ZR motorcycle — with a total estimated value of RM199,300. The drugs seized are believed to be enough to supply approximately 230,000 addicts. 'The three local men arrested tested positive for drugs and have between seven and 13 previous records related to criminal and drug offences. Some had only recently been released from prison for similar offences,' he said. All four suspects have been remanded for seven days until July 29 to assist in investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. — Bernama

Kelantan chicken trader, husband remanded another week over RM3.1m ganja bust

KOTA BHARU, July 17 — The remand order against a married couple who were arrested in Kuala Krai on suspicion of masterminding the trafficking of ganja worth RM3.1 million has been extended for another seven days from today until next Monday. Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the two suspects, aged 31 and 49 respectively, are now being investigated in detail to assist in further investigations into the case. He said for the case involving a woman chicken trader and her e-hailing driver husband, charges will be laid on July 21. 'So far, no other arrests have been made and investigations are still ongoing to identify whether the couple has links to other syndicates,' he said in a special press conference at the Kelantan police contingent headquarters, here, today. Last Sunday, Bernama reported that police had busted a drug trafficking syndicate using cashew nut packets after arresting a local couple and seizing various drugs worth a total of about RM3.1 million last Friday. The two suspects were arrested at about 4pm at Jalan Padang Sembilan, Kuala Krai after police found the Proton X70 vehicle they were travelling in, moving in a suspicious condition. Meanwhile, Mohd Yusoff said the index crime in Kelantan for the first quarter of January to June 2025 recorded a decrease of 14.3 per cent or 162 cases, with 967 cases reported compared to 1,129 cases for the same period last year. However, he said, for violent crimes, there was an increase of 19 rape cases or 26.8 per cent; armed robbery increased by four cases (400 per cent); and injury cases increased by 16 cases (18.8 per cent). 'This shows the urgent need to strengthen monitoring, community education and enforcement in hot spots,' he said. Commenting on road accident statistics, he said 7,055 cases were recorded for the period January to June 2025, showing a decrease of 123 cases or two per cent compared to 7,178 cases in the same period last year. Fatal accident cases also dropped to 132 cases compared to 169 cases the previous year, a decrease of 32 cases or 19 per cent. — Bernama

Kelantan police nab couple, seize RM3.1m worth of drugs

KOTA BHARU, July 13 — Police have busted a drug trafficking syndicate, with the arrest of a local couple last Friday, believed to be actively trafficking compressed ganja and ganja buds concealed in cashew nut packages, with total seizures valued at RM3.1 million. Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the suspects, aged 31 and 49, were detained around 4pm while travelling in a Proton X70 along Jalan Padang Sembilan, Kuala Krai, after their vehicle was seen being driven suspiciously. He said that a subsequent inspection of the vehicle led to the discovery of 110 plastic packages, containing dried plant material believed to be ganja buds, weighing 60.8 kilogrammes, compressed ganja weighing 6.95 kilogrammes, and 150 yaba pills. 'The total drug haul in Kuala Krai alone amounted to 67.75 kilogrammes of ganja and 15 grams of yaba pills, with an estimated value of RM2.37 million,' he said, during a special press conference at the Kelantan contingent police headquarters, here, today. Following the arrest, police raided the couple's home in Selising, Pasir Puteh, on the same day, and seized an additional 22 kilogrammes of compressed ganja worth RM775,000. Cash, necklaces, and other jewellery were also seized during the raids at both locations, bringing the total value of the confiscated items to RM3.1 million. Mohd Yusoff said initial investigations found that the female suspect operates a processed chicken business, while her husband works as a p-hailing driver. The couple is believed to have been actively involved in drug trafficking for over a year, using their legitimate businesses as a front. 'We believe that this syndicate has an extensive network and serves as a major supplier, including to overseas markets, as the value of the seized cannabis buds is significantly higher than that of regular cannabis leaves,' he added. The male suspect tested positive for drugs, while the female tested negative. Both, however, have prior records related to narcotics offences, and they have been remanded for seven days, from July 11, to assist in investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952,' he said. Meanwhile, Mohd Yusoff said that police have not ruled out a connection between the recently busted drug syndicate and an international network, possibly linked to the June 27 seizure of 35.4 kilogrammes of yaba pills, allegedly masterminded by a salon and restaurant owner. Investigations are ongoing, and efforts to track down remaining syndicate members continue. On July 3, Bernama reported that police had dismantled a drug syndicate and seized RM5.04 million worth of yaba pills, in six raids across Pasir Mas and Tumpat, arresting six local suspects, aged 25 to 39. — Bernama
