Iraqi power generation down to 25 GW

Iraq is producing nearly 25 gigawatts (GW) of electricity which is far below actual consumption in the OPEC producer, an official has said. Maintenance and rehabilitation of a number of power facilities could increase Iraq's electricity generation to nearly 28 GW. 'This is not possible now because of the shortage in gas supplies needed to feed those facilities,' Electricity Ministry spokesman Ahmed Mousa said. Mousa, quoted by the official news agency on Monday, said actual power needs are much higher than current production due to the surge in Summer demand. 'The Ministry has prepared an emergency plan for summer but we need more gas supplies to operate facilities that have been rehabilitated,' he said. Iraq relies heavily on gas supplies from Iran, which has slashed exports over the past few months due to a surge in domestic consumption. Separatist Moldovan region facing crisis without Russian gas, minister says

CHISINAU, June 18 (Reuters) - Moldova's pro-Russian separatist Transdniestria region faces a dire economic crisis triggered by this year's halting of gas supplies from Russia and a collapse in industrial and farm production, a senior minister in the enclave said on Wednesday. Moldova's pro-European President Maia Sandu has warned that Russia could use instability in Transdniestria to sow chaos and influence a September election to secure a parliament and government more favourable to Moscow. Sandu is seeking European Union membership by 2030. "Forecasts for Transdniestria's economy are not encouraging, based on uncertainty over gas supplies, a lack of a contract on power exports from the thermal plant and the fact that major industrial plants are idle," Economic Development Minister Sergei Obolonik told a government session on Wednesday. "There remains a risk that Moldova could introduce new sanctions and restrictive regulations," he said, according to local media. Transdniestria broke from Soviet Moldova in 1990. Other than a brief 1992 conflict, it has lived alongside the rest of the now-independent state with little upheaval for more than 30 years thanks largely to assistance provided by Moscow. But Russia halted supplies of virtually free gas in January after Ukraine shut a transit pipeline. Separatist authorities secured alternative gas through a Hungarian supplier with Russian funding, but that supply has proved insufficient to keep the economy afloat. Obolonik forecast a 12% drop in gross domestic product in the second half of the year from a year ago, a 30% plunge in industrial output, a 6% slide in agricultural production, a 20% slide in foreign trade and inflation of 16%. Improvement next year, he said, depended on finding reliable gas sources and on Moldova introducing no punitive measures. "We can expect no real growth in the economy," Obolonik said. "The best scenario is for indicators to remain at this year's levels."

Russian pipeline gas exports to Europe rose 10% m/m in May, data shows

MOSCOW, June 2 (Reuters) - Russian energy giant Gazprom's ( opens new tab average daily natural gas supplies to Europe via the TurkStream undersea pipeline increased by 10.3% in May from a month earlier, Reuters calculations showed on Monday. Turkey is the only transit route left for Russian gas to Europe after Ukraine chose not to extend a five-year transit deal with Moscow when it expired on January 1. Calculations based on data from European gas transmission group Entsog showed that Russian gas exports via the TurkStream pipeline rose to 46.0 million cubic metres (mcm) per day in May from 41.7 mcm per day in April. That was down from 47.2 mcm in May 2024. Total Russian gas supplies to Europe via TurkStream stood at around 7.2 billion cubic metres (bcm) in the first five months of this year, compared to 6.6 bcm during the same period a year earlier, according to Reuters calculations. The company, which has not published its own monthly statistics since the start of 2023, did not respond to a request for comment. Russia supplied about 63.8 bcm of gas to Europe by various routes in 2022, Gazprom data and Reuters calculations show. That plummeted by 55.6% to 28.3 bcm in 2024, but increased to around 32 bcm in 2024. At their peak in 2018-2019, annual gas flows to Europe reached between 175 bcm and 180 bcm.
