Greece Hooks Up Undersea Power Link to Crete as Part of Mediterranean Grid Plans
ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greece announced Monday it has completed the work on an undersea power cable link connecting the mainland to the island of Crete, a key step in its ambitious plan for a wider expansion of the grid in the Eastern Mediterranean that will eventually include Cyprus and Israel. The 1 billion euro ($1.14 billion) link spanning 330 kilometers (205 miles) was plugged in on Saturday and is expected to be fully operational this summer, Greece's grid operator said.

Britain could face months-long blackouts because of net zero
Ed Miliband's net zero push risks leaving Britain increasingly vulnerable to a Spanish-style blackout, official reports have warned. The grid operator has raised concerns that the switch from dependable gas to intermittent wind and solar power will ' reduce network stability '. It also said the cost to taxpayers of funding countermeasures to prevent the system crashing is set to 'increase significantly' to £1 billion a year. Meanwhile, the global energy watchdog has sounded the alarm over the 'premature retirement' of gas power plants 'without adequate replacements'. It can also be revealed that Government officials have admitted it would take Britain 'several months' to fully recover from a nationwide electricity outage. Spain and Portugal were hit with huge power cuts last month, which experts have said were likely caused by their reliance on renewable energy. Ministers have played down the prospect of a Spanish-style blackout occurring here, insisting that the UK has a 'highly resilient energy network'.
