1 dead, 1 injured in head-on crash on Highway 49 in Amador County

One woman died and another woman was hospitalized after a head-on crash in Amador County, officials said Thursday. The California Highway Patrol's Amador division said the collision happened around 1 p.m. along southbound Highway 49 near Highway 16. A 22-year-old woman from Sacramento was driving a Ford Mustang when she veered off the side of the road, overcorrected and entered into the path of an oncoming Toyota Rav4, driven by a 79-year-old woman from Jackson, the CHP said. The Jackson woman died as a result of the crash, and the Sacramento woman was airlifted to Sutter Roseville Hospital with unknown injuries. Neither woman's name has been released. Investigators said the circumstances of the crash remain under investigation, and it is not yet clear whether drugs or alcohol were factors. A road closure was in effect but has since been lifted.

Mother killed, children critically hurt in San Mateo crash on Highway 92 offramp

A woman was killed and her two young children severely injured in a crash in San Mateo Thursday evening at an off-ramp from state Highway 92, authorities said. The crash happened at about 6:17 p.m. at the Alameda de las Pulgas exit from Highway 92. The San Mateo Police Department said on social media that its officers and California Highway Patrol officers arrived to find two vehicles involved, a Ford SUV and a Toyota Prius. The department said the driver of the Prius, a 30-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene, while her 5-year-old and 7-year-old boys were taken to the hospital in critical condition. The man driving the Ford, who was the only occupant in his vehicle, was hospitalized with minor injuries. According to police, the preliminary investigation indicated the Ford was exiting the eastbound 92 off-ramp and ran a red light at Alameda de las Pulgas. The Ford then broadsided the Prius that was headed north on Alameda de las Pulgas on a green light, police said. It was not clear why the Ford driver did not stop at the red light, but police said he was not driving impaired. Alameda de las Pulgas was closed in both directions, as were the eastbound Highway 92 on- and off-ramps for several hours during the investigation.

Province working to improve highway intersection east of Edmonton that was site of death

The intersection of highways 16 and 855 two kilometres south of Mundare, Alta., on July 28, 2025. Less than a week ago, Bernie and Allison Palsitt were preparing for their daughter's graduation party. Now, they're planning her funeral. Annya Palsitt excelled in sports, loved to paint and planned to become a teacher. '(She) was such a spitfire; the energy she had was just amazing,' Allison told CTV News Edmonton on Monday. 'You couldn't persuade her to do something unless she really wanted to do it, and she set her mind to do so many things.' But the 17-year-old's bright future was cut short last week in a highway collision 75 kilometres east of Edmonton. Annya was on her way home Friday to the family farm near Mundare from work as a camp counsellor when her vehicle was hit by a semi-trailer while crossing Highway 16 on Highway 855. (Sean McClune/CTV News Edmonton) 'Hug your kids and tell them how much they mean to you because you never know when the last time is,' Bernie told CTV News Edmonton. The highway intersection two kilometres south of the town has been a problem spot for years, says Mundare Mayor Cheryl Calinou, even though improvements to it have been made over time, including flashing signs, better lighting and rumble strips to warn about the crossing. 'It's always been an ongoing concern because it's such a bad intersection,' Calinou told CTV News Edmonton. 'So many fatalities, accidents almost weekly. It's been horrible.' Devin Dreeshan, Alberta's transportation minister, told CTV News Edmonton in a statement a study was recently done to see what improvements could be made to this intersection, including the need for an interchange. Detailed design work is expected to start as early as 2026. Once that is complete and funding is in place, Dreeshan says construction could be completed within a two-year window.
