Is THIS the most overpriced semi-detached in Britain? House hunters stunned after couple put three-bed home on sale for £2M over average asking price... but neighbours say it is worth it
A couple have infuriated house hunters online after listing their home for almost £2million over the average sale price of their street. Residents reacted with 'shock' and 'disbelief' after the ordinary looking property in Hove, East Sussex was put on the market for a staggering £2.5million. The asking price for the smartly presented property has caused consternation among potential buyers who have claimed it is 'overpriced.' They claim that although the red-brick home has a sought-after seaside location, it actually backs onto a block of high rise flats and sits on a busy road which has a high crime rate. The owners - who are in their late 80s - bought the property in East Sussex in 2010 for £750,000 but have now put it on the market for more than three times that amount. According to property experts Purple Bricks, the average cost of a house on the street where the couple are looking to sell is £600k. One resident told MailOnline: 'I'm shocked. It's incredible how much house prices have risen in the last 15 years but I'd never expect a house to be on the market for so much - it's a King's ransom. 'It's unbelievable really. I understand it is in a desirable location but this road is very busy all the time and the back garden looks out over the flats - not exactly a beautiful view.' The house sits just 100 yards from the pebble beach. The elderly couple are understood to be selling it so they can downsize away from the seafront. Hove is a well-heeled and desirable location to live where the average price of a detached house is £846,600. Neighbour Barbara Crafts, said: 'They are a lovely couple but they're getting on. 'Although the house only has three bedrooms it is deceptively large and the bedrooms are huge and have walk-in dressing rooms.' Mrs Crafts, who is in her 70s, who lives in a spacious three-bedroom flat on the street, said: 'Although it looks quite ordinary from the front it is a lovely house and very spacious and they've spent some money doing it up. 'I've lived here for around eight years and my children who live up north are always telling me to sell. They tell me I could buy a fantastic property near them for just a fraction.' The house, which boasts a drive and a garage, also has a study, dining room, sitting room, four bathrooms and an attic games and media room. Rachel Dent, a mother-of-two who lives in a two-bedroom flat on the street, said: 'That is an awful lot of money but that house is like a tardis - it is absolutely massive on the inside. There is 250sqm of living space, which is huge. 'It is deceptive as from the outside it looks like it could be in any street in Britain but it goes back a long away and is really very big. It might not have the wow factor on the outside but the inside is a different story.' The property is immaculately turned out inside with a host of homely fittings Viewers checking the online listing questioned how the 'modest' home could command such a high price. One said: 'Those flats overlooking the back would be an instant no for me even if dirt cheap. Half the house is the master suite. Seems unnecessary.' Another said: '£2.5m is insane money for this. Surely its not worth even close to that. Even at half, it would be steep, no?' Another viewer said: 'How much!? And why does that main bedroom need two dressing rooms and such a huge bathroom?! Should have just made one of the dressing rooms a guest room instead.' Yet another said: 'Faaaaar too of property faces west, back faces east. Front faces a row of guest houses/hotels including a God awful 60's(?) 5 story guest house directly opposite. 'Back faces an 11 story block of flats. So, no privacy and no sunlight in the morning or evening.' It's an ambitious asking price, but not the most audacious in recent memory. Last year, a Russian millionaire who tried to sell a London 'council house' for £3.5m was forced to concede defeat and make a drastic u-turn. The ordinary-looking four-bed suburban property had attracted widespread mockery due to its eye-watering price tag when it was listed last year. But owner Lukov Nikolov refused to bow down claiming the fee was justified because he spent £1.4m renovating the property. When MailOnline visited the house, more than a year after it was put on the market, neighbours revealed the wealthy businessman had been forced 'move in himself' after failing to find a buyer. The house was built in the late 1950s and used by police officers relocating to work in London for the Met Police. But in every other respect it's equivalent to nearby council housing in style and size. Despite being unable to find househunters with deep enough pockets, Mr Nikolov then listed another property on the same road for £3m. One resident told MailOnline: 'He's got another one too, just up the road, which has been on the market for a while. 'The [second property] is huge. It's got a basement, a cinema and all the rest of it. They've probably doubled the square footage. 'I think he probably moves between them.' Mr Nikolov bought the first property for £1.2m in 2015 and began to renovate inside. He was able to dig down and create a new spacious basement 'flooded with natural light', which increased the properties' square footage by a third. The home now deceptively spreads over 3650sq ft of interior space and has four floors as well as its own cinema room, which, in the view of Mr Nikolov justified the £2.3million increase in value. Mr Nikolov's second property was bough for the cheaper fee of £878,000 before renovating it too. Properties in Canonbury sold for an overall average price of £934,290 in the last few years, according to RightMove, with the majority of sales being flats, which sold for an average price of £633,512. Terraced properties sold for an average of £1,659,972, with semi-detached properties fetching £3,873,333 - placing Mr Nikolov's property slightly below average.

'Bright and stylish' Victorian London flat could be yours for £500,000 - but would-be buyers have identified one terrifying feature
A 'bright and stylish' Victorian London flat has gone on the market for £500,000 - but horrified house hunters are warning of a terrifying catch. The two-bed townhouse in Brockley, South London seems pretty normal at first glance with a modern looking living area and sleek, neutral-toned kitchen. But the property caught the attention of online viewers after they noticed what appeared to be a 'death trap' in the form of a vast chasm in the middle of the room. Disturbing photographs show a gaping hole lies directly opposite the flat's double bed, with a staircase leading to the floor below also visible. Horrified critics noted there seemed to be no railing around the top of the staircase and no glass covering the hole, which they branded a 'wild' decision by the seller. A user shared the listing online with the caption: 'Deathtrap stairs to master bedroom. Yikes. How is there no railing around that??' Commenters have expressed their concerns about the 'unsafe' nature of the property with many questioning why there were no railings around the staircase. One user replied: 'I'd be dead in a week if I lived there. How have they survived? They must bounce.' A second said: 'Screw that, imagine going at it on the edge of the bed and you slip - whole new definition to needing a railing.' A third wrote: 'Wow I was expecting bad but not "letterbox to downstairs and you're the post" bad.' Another added: 'As someone with a knackered ankle and absolutely no balance, those stairs frighten the sh**e out of me.' A fifth said: 'If they want to live with that that's their mad choice, but to put it up for sale without railing it first is just wild.' The controversial flat listed by Conran Estates is advertised on Rightmove as 'bright and stylish' accommodation. The listing also says the property is on the top two floors of an end of terrace Victorian townhouse that boasts 'gorgeous' floorboards. Requesting offers 'in excess of £500,000', the listing reads: 'Set to the top two floors of a handsome end of terrace Victorian townhouse, this two-bedroom share of freehold home offers bright and stylish accommodation. 'Gorgeous stripped and polished floorboards are a theme. 'For many, [the road] is the premier address in the [area]. Wide pavements and parades of trees frame these beautifully authentic Victorian townhouses.'

Two-bed flat on sale for £475,000 appears 'drab' and 'forgotten about' - but it has the 'best view in the country'
An old flat in Edinburgh has caught the attention of house hunters for having what has been dubbed 'the best city view in the UK'. The two-bedroom property listed on Rightmove for £475,000 is in the centre of the Scottish capital and looks as if it hasn't been maintained in some years. However, it has one major draw card: the exceptional view from the balcony over the city toward Edinburgh Castle. Some guessed the fourth-floor apartment had been 'forgotten about' while others said its central location could be too noisy to be inhabitable. But many said they would put up with the racket and dingy conditions to take advantage of the unmatched scenery. The flat features two bedrooms in much need of some new carpet, a blue-tiled bathroom and timber-ceiling kitchen and dining room. There is also a sun-filled living room with an old chandelier and bay window, as well as a long, narrow attic, which one person said gave off 'Harry Potter vibes'. 'The best city view in the UK?' one person wrote on Reddit, drawing in a string of impressed comments. 'When I was younger, I was desperate to live in one of those attic apartments in Edinburgh City centre,' one user said. 'Several of these will come up, I think, as quite a few have been sealed up and forgotten about. What a view. 'Noisy in August and the festive period, but what a location!' a second wrote. Many saw the dated flat's potential, pointing out some basic renovations could transform it into a stunning home. 'It sits atop a Burger King and an Ann Summers. Great views, AND everything you might need readily on hand,' one home lover said and another replied: 'Well, I'm sold'. 'That is absolutely stunning. Not even that expensive, considering,' a third commented. 'Wow, that could be a stunning flat,' someone added. The average house price in Edinburgh's city centre currently sits at £361,095 based on homes sold in the past year, according to Rightmove, however, the Prince Street flat's view may have upped its value. It comes after Reddit claimed to have found one of the most 'miserable' lettings in London. Renters looking for a studio apartment in London can move into a 'delightful' studio apartment in a 'great location' for £899 per month, according to Open Rent on Rightmove. However, Reddit users have blasted the property in London's Palmers Green, Enfield, approximately an hour-long drive from Oxford Street, for its 'depressing' size. While the price includes bills, the entirety of the flat fits into one tight square, with the bed next to the front door and the front door bordering the kitchen sink and oven. It's caused quite a stir on Reddit, with one writing: 'Unbelievable. How have our governments allowed the housing market to get to this disgraceful state.' The letting agency explained: 'We are proud to offer this delightful one-bedroom, one-bathroom studio flat in a great location. 'Available to move in from 23 February 2025, this property benefits from garden access. The property is offered furnished. 'Viewing highly recommended. Contact OpenRent today for more details or to arrange a viewing.' The zone five flat, which requires a £899 deposit, comes furnished and has garden access. Despite the amenities, Reddit users took the platform to explain their shock at the property, with one writing: 'I've seen nicer rooms in Scandinavian prisons'. A second wrote: 'Wow, so I get to pay for the privilege of sleeping in a room that stinks of my stale dinner!' Another added: 'I'm starting to understand why some people smell like their cooking depending on what they're making, the smell can easily seep into the wardrobe. 'I'm guessing the bathroom is past that door? If not, that kitchen sink is going to serve a dual purpose if the shared bathroom is occupied.' However, others claimed the property is a 'steal,' with one adding: 'This is actually not even that bad! There's a proper oven and a washing machine! And the shower isn't in the middle of the room. The bar is so low.'
