Apple fans slam change to iPhone app in iOS 26 as ‘just plain ugly': ‘A real mess'
Watch ya complaining about? Apple fans are divided over a surprisingly polarizing change introduced in the latest iOS 26 Beta: a redesign of the Clock app icon. What seems like a minor aesthetic tweak has sparked a wave of online backlash from iPhone users. 3 Apple fans are divided over a surprisingly polarizing change introduced in the latest iOS 26 Beta: a redesign of the Clock app icon. nikkimeel – Since 2013, the iPhone's Clock icon has featured a distinctive white clock face against a black square background — a familiar and functional design that many have grown attached to. However, the classic icon has been updated with iOS 26, which was unveiled this week at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). It now shows an all-white background with added clock markings around the outer edge. Though seemingly minor, the change has not gone unnoticed. Many iPhone users have taken to social media platforms, including X to vent their frustration. 'Am I the only one who didn't like the new clock icon?' one user asked, according to the Daily Mail. 3 The clock now shows an all-white background with added clock markings around the outer edge. X/Apple Hub Another was more blunt: 'Apple has made a real mess with this 26. I won't be downloading it ever.' The popular Apple fan account @applesclubs posted a side-by-side comparison of the old and new icons, inviting followers to weigh in — and the responses were overwhelmingly in favor of the original design. 'iOS 18 can't read iOS 26,' one user quipped, while another called the updated icon 'just plain ugly.' The icon update is part of a broader design overhaul in iOS 26, which introduces what Apple calls a 'Liquid Glass' aesthetic — translucent, dynamic visual effects that respond to content and context. According to Alan Dye, Apple's Vice President of Human Interface Design, the redesign aims to make software 'intuitive, beautiful, and delightful.' In addition to the Clock icon, other app icons have also received visual refreshes. AirDrop now features a blue background with translucent white lines, while the Translate app swapped its black background for blue. Despite these broader changes, it's the new Clock design that seems to have triggered the strongest reactions. Currently available only to developers, iOS 26 is expected to roll out to the public this fall. 3 The icon update is part of a broader design overhaul in iOS 26, which introduces what Apple calls a 'Liquid Glass' aesthetic — translucent, dynamic visual effects that respond to content and context. Apple iOS 26: When it's being released, and how you can download it early
Apple officially unveiled its updated iOS 26 operating system in a keynote speech that went live on Wednesday, June 9. The new design comes with a new name that you may have noticed has skipped several numerical iterations from the current iOS 18 that iPhone users are using on their devices. Apple is set to rebrand its operating system name by following the last two digits of each upcoming year, and will do so across all of its platforms, including Apple TV, MacOS, WatchOS and iPadOS, according to a news release . Among the design improvements is the newly introduced 'Liquid Glass,' Apple's 'broadest design update ever,' according to the keynote speech . The 'universal design' will, for the first time, be available across all of Apple's platforms, and is set to provide a 'harmonious experience' as users move seamlessly within Apple's ecosystem. Liquid Glass will have the optical qualities and fluidity of glass, and will reflect light and dynamically react to the user's movement, according to Apple. The translucent redesign will appear across all Apple devices, including CarPlay, which will create a more intuitive experience for users. Apple Intelligence will also receive updates, with users now being able to translate texts and calls as they happen and perform screenshot searches in real time. For a complete rundown on all of the new features in Apple iOS 26, visit or watch the keynote speech . Apple has made it easier than ever to get your hands on the new iOS early through its Apple Beta Software Program. All you have to do is register as an Apple developer by signing in with your Apple account and accepting the Apple Developer Agreement to register for free. Once you've done so, you can access beta versions of new iOS releases by going to Settings > General > Software Updates, and toggling Beta Updates on your device. The iOS 26 Beta will then appear, giving you access to download an early preview of all of the new features and technologies within the new operating system. The current beta requires 9.23 GB of space on your phone, and it is recommended that you backup your device prior to the installation in the event of any bugs or crashes that may occur in the first iteration of the developer beta. A first iteration typically has some bugs, but also provides a window for Apple to receive user feedback and correct all of the issues that may arise ahead of the public release. Here is what the public has been saying about their experience so far. 'iOS 26 Beta is very buggy. So glitchy, so slow, runs hot even after no use. The notification centre, control centre is bad in terms of performance and visuals, because you can see everything behind and there is not enough blur in background. Needs tons of polish,' said @badhanganesh on X. iOS 26 Beta is very buggy. So glitchy, so slow, runs hot even after no use.
