This clever feature from Apple's next iPad is something Android tablets also need
Aamir Siddiqui / Android Authority TL;DR Apple's upcoming iPad Pro M5 will reportedly include two front cameras — one on the landscape edge and another on the portrait edge. The change will allow users to better use both portrait and landscape orientations for selfies or calls. Android tablets should also adopt this approach for its practical benefits. Most big launches are done for this year, but we still have two heavyweights to look forward to in the coming months. Google will launch the Pixel 10 series in August, and we then expect Apple to follow up with the iPhone 17 series sometime in September, followed by the launch of new iPad Pros sometime in October. The iPhone 17 is exciting, but it seems Apple has something good cooking for the upcoming iPad Pro too, and we want to see it on Android tablets too. Mark Gurman reports that Apple is adding a second front camera to the upcoming iPad Pro M5. The iPad Pro lineup featured a portrait-side front camera until the iPad Pro M4 (2024), wherein Apple switched its position to the landscape end. The upcoming second front camera will be on the portrait side. This will enable iPad Pro M5 users to use the tablet equally well in either portrait or landscape orientation for selfies and video calls. I bought the iPad Pro M4 last month, and I certainly see where Apple is getting this idea from. While the landscape orientation front camera is great for longer meetings when I have the tablet propped up on a folio case, I miss having a camera on the portrait edge for quicker video calls with the family. A second front camera on the portrait edge would solve the issue wonderfully. I have also run into issues with FaceID in portrait orientation, as sometimes my hand accidentally covers or obstructs the front camera, forcing me to enter my PIN to unlock the iPad. This could be fixed by opting for TouchID on the power button, but a second set of TrueDepth cameras would be an equally fantastic addition. The leak doesn't discuss whether the second camera will be a TrueDepth camera, so don't hold your breath on FaceID functionality from it. Rita El Khoury / Android Authority The more I think about it, the more I want Android tablets to copy this approach of packing in two front cameras, one on each edge. Unlike phones that are primarily used in portrait orientation, tablets are used interchangeably between portrait and landscape orientations. A tablet has plenty of internal space and bezels to pack a second front camera, and most users will get more utility out of it than a second rear camera, presuming both front cameras output equal quality. There shouldn't be a right way to hold a tablet, whether Android or Apple, and adding a second front camera will help us get there. Got a tip? Talk to us! iPad Pro M5 tipped for big dual-camera upgrade — but not where you'd think
Apple's next iPad Pro with an M5 chip is a surefire bet to be one of the best iPads you can buy, and it looks to already be in production for a late-2025 launch. Now we hear it may arrive with another camera — and it's a throwback to the tech giant's earlier tablets. The iPad Pro M5 is set to deliver dual front-facing cameras, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Now, the upcoming tablet is tipped to have both a landscape and portrait camera, meaning it can be positioned to use FaceID, go on video calls or take selfies in both ways. The current iPad Pro M4 ditched the portrait camera for a 12MP front landscape camera that sits along the edge of the tablet, which is much more in tune with how it's generally used when placed on a Magic Keyboard. But Apple now seems to want to bring the portrait camera from the iPad Pro M2 back, possibly delivering the best of both orientations. Whether both cameras will offer 12MP resolution (or higher) and allow for FaceID is still in question, although it's worth noting that FaceID on the M4-equipped iPad Pro already works in both portrait and landscape orientation anyway. Both the 11- and 13-inch iPad Pro M5 models are looking to get the dual-camera upgrade, but we'll have to wait and see what the advantages are of having both lenses on the front. After all, Apple's Center Stage already keeps you centered in frame. While the next iPad Pro is now expected to deliver an upgraded dual-camera system and M5 performance boost, there's not much in the way of other major changes. The 2024 iPad Pro already jumped the M3 chip to offer speedy M4 performance, a gorgeous OLED panel (the Ultra Retina XDR display, as Apple calls it) and an even thinner, lighter design — one that even beats the iPad Air M3. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. This year's slated model isn't expected to deliver any other major improvements, aside from possibly being the first Apple product to feature an M5 chip and now having a dual front-camera system. That said, there may be other surprises up Apple's sleeve, and iPadOS 26 will bring plenty of updates. The iPad Pro with M5 is expected to be announced during Apple's usual fall event, with the tablet likely to be released sometime in September or October. The last iPad Pro launched in May 2024, and now it may not be much longer until we see what the next Pro-level tablet has to offer. That's not the only M5-equipped machine Apple appears to have coming up this year, as a leaked Mac lineup shows MacBook Pro M5 and more are on the way, too. Apple iPad Pro M5 Model Could Launch With Two Front Cameras: Know More
Last Updated: The new iPad Pro model could solve a big issue for the users and reports say Apple could bring the new version later this year. The iPad Pro M5 model is expected to launch in the next few quarters, and Apple is going to make a big change that affects one of its features. The company wants to give people the flexibility to use the front camera on the iPads for calls and meetings, so it plans to add another camera on the front layer to make it possible for you to take calls in portrait or landscape mode. The iPad Pro model is seen as a productivity device so Apple should serve the needs of all its users. iPad Pro M5 Model Changes Expected The report from Bloomberg says iPad Pro users have faced issues using the camera with the M4 model which is available in landscape orientation. They have found it hard to unlock the M4 iPad Pro tablet especially using the Face ID for security for even FaceTime calls. So, instead of changing the position of the camera, the report says Apple will basically add a new sensor in the portrait mode to help people handle these basic tasks. The report talks about Apple rejigging the layout, just so that users don't face these issues with the upcoming model. iPad Pros still rely on Face ID for unlocking the device, while the iPad Air gets Touch ID built into the power button. Apple is likely to bring the M5 iPad Pro later this year, but it could also push the launch to early 2026 which is shaping up to be a big year for the brand. Before that, you also have the iPhone 17 series launch widely tipped for September. The iPhone 17 Pro edition from Apple is tipped to get a host of upgrades, including a new look for the rear camera module, but another big change could be the colour variants for these models. We've seen the company go for brighter shades for the iPhone 15 and 16 series earlier, and now it could be time for the 17 Pro series to get some colourful action. The iPhone 17 Pro prices could start from around Rs 1,30,000 as per reports, which then pushes the 17 Pro Max into the 2 lakh+ territory for the highest variant. view comments First Published: July 21, 2025, 13:51 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. I've skipped several iPad generations, but this iPad Pro M5 feature could be what I'm waiting for
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Quick Summary Apple could switch the display tech for future iPad Pro devices, introducing processes to allow for slimmer bezels and potentially smaller tablets. It's not known whether this will be in time for the iPad Pro M5 or if we'll have to wait a bit longer. Apple is considering a display technology that could give future iPad Pro models slimmer bezels, and therefore more screen real estate without increasing their physical size. Alternatively, it could even see its best iPads shrink to be lighter and more manageable, while retaining the same display size. It is reported (by The Elec via MacRumors) that the company could switch the display drivers for its iPad Pro OLED panels from Samsung's to those manufactured by LX Semicon. It would also then adopt LG Innotek's CoF technology, too. This latter tech enables display driver hardware to be attached to panels using heat compression on flexible film. This is how signals can be sent to the OLED panel to drive individual pixels. It is also a process that allows for the edges of the panel to run tighter to the enclosure – thereby potentially reducing bezel sizes. Apple has already made significant strides in reducing the frame around the screen in recent times, it also jumped to OLED for its current model – the iPad Pro M4 – which improved already excellent picture performance to another level. There's also the option for nano texture glass on spec'ed up models, to reduce glare and create a more paper-like feel. However, it's the shrinking of the bezels that attracts me most to a possible future purchase. Having owned an 11-inch M2 iPad Pro since its launch in 2022, I've not had the inclination nor need for a replacement. However, it's fairly heavy, and I'd happily swap it in for something lighter and a touch smaller. Alternatively, I'm all up for a larger screen with no physical trade-off. Especially considering the new MacBook-like features coming with iPadOS 26. The only issue is whether Apple will sign a new display supply deal before the iPad Pro M5 is due in stores. It might just be I'll have to wait a bit longer. Ah well, I'm a patient chap.
