OWC Guardian SSD offers touchscreen security & fast transfers

Other World Computing has announced the launch of the OWC Guardian, a portable solid-state drive featuring hardware-based encryption and a touchscreen interface for securing data on the go. Focus on data security The OWC Guardian is designed to address the needs of users seeking secure and convenient solutions to safeguard sensitive data while maintaining fast transfer speeds. The device utilises 256-bit AES OPAL hardware encryption, automatically encrypting data when it is written and decrypting it upon authorised access. This process occurs independent of the host system, ensuring no impact on computer processor performance. The storage device connects via USB-C and is compatible with Macs, iPad Pros, and PCs. There is no need to install additional software, as all operations are managed through the integrated colour touchscreen on the unit, which enables users to enter either a numeric PIN or passphrase to authenticate access. The OWC Guardian supports multi-user access and includes features like read-only mode, secure erase, and a keypad that randomises its layout to further protect against unauthorised entry. Performance and ease of use Storage capacities are available up to 4.0TB, with real-world data transfer speeds claimed at up to 1000MB/s. These performance specifications allow the drive to accommodate requirements such as large file backups, media transfers, and 4K video editing. The hardware is housed in an anodised aluminium body, providing both impact protection and heat dissipation. The device is bus powered, using the included USB-C cable. Larry O'Connor, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Other World Computing, commented on the intentions behind the OWC Guardian: "We designed the OWC Guardian for anyone who needs simple, reliable data protection on the go, but without the typical hassles. Whether you're transferring a huge file in the boardroom, backing up data at the local coffee shop, or editing a 4K video for your latest content drop, you shouldn't have to choose between security, speed, and ease of use. The OWC Guardian delivers all three, in a rugged, intuitive design built to travel." Feature overview Additional key features of the OWC Guardian include programmable password access management, platform-independent data encryption, an interface resembling a smartphone for straightforward operation, and read-only capabilities to prevent data from being changed. The drive's compatibility with a range of devices and operating systems allows professionals in a variety of fields to manage their sensitive data with minimal workflow disruption. The secure erase function supports data sanitisation requirements, while the inclusion of a randomised keypad layout adds an extra layer of protection from observation or unauthorised access attempts. Market positioning and pricing The OWC Guardian is priced at parity with many hard disk drive (HDD) competitors but is intended to offer double the performance attributed to its solid-state architecture. Regional pricing and availability may vary, but key prices are set at $219.99 for the 1.0TB version, $329.99 for 2.0TB, and $529.99 for 4.0TB. The device is aimed at users who handle confidential or compliance-sensitive data and wish to ensure their storage solution does not add additional complexity to their workflow. Its cross-platform compatibility and hardware-level security are intended to meet the practical needs of business professionals, creatives, and individuals alike. Follow us on: Share on:

iPad Pro M5 tipped for upcoming launch as Apple begins production on OLED displays

It appears that both Samsung and LG have started mass production of OLED displays for the M5 iPad Pro, which looks to confirm the rumored October release date. It appears that both Samsung and LG will produce both sizes of display, according to a report from ZDNet Korea (via MacRumors.) The last generation of OLED iPad Pros saw Samsung produce the 11-inch OLED display, while LG produced the 13-inch display. This change is likely to help Apple diversify its suppliers, which would help with the rumored launch of the 2026 iPad Mini and the 2027 iPad Air with OLED panels. This isn't the only news we've seen that indicates that Apple is preparing to release the tablet later this year. For instance, Mark Gurman claimed that the iPad Pro had entered the advanced testing phase back in March. Not only that, we saw a report that stated Apple was starting the mass production of the M5 chip back in February. If these are accurate, then it suggests that the tablet is essentially ready to be released to the public. Aside from the OLED panels, we haven't seen many reports about significant updates for the new iPad Pro, with Gurman suggesting we'll have to wait until next year for those. However, the M5 chip is expected to offer improved graphics and an enhanced Neural Engine, which would be a big benefit to Apple Intelligence. Due to reported delays to Apple's 2nm process work, we're expecting the M5 will be made on the same 3nm process as the M4 and M3 chips. But Apple not using an advanced chip-manufacturing method shouldn't impact the chances of the next iPad Pro making our best iPads list too much. The M5 chip isn't just for the iPad Pro, as we're also expecting a revised MacBook Pro to launch with the M5 chip around the same time. But for OLED fans, unfortunately we're hearing that the rumored MacBook OLED display overhaul likely won't appear until 2026. When it does release, we'd expect to see a pretty impressive visual improvement, alongside longer battery life, as we've seen with the OLED iPad Pro. Amazon reportedly developing a foldable tablet that could launch as early as next year

Huawei's new MateBook Fold laptop surprised, and it's got people around the tech world talking. Here in the United States, people are looking at Apple and its long-rumored folding iPad or MacBook. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo put in his two cents today (May 20), saying that Apple's competition "may not be limited to Huawei." He claimed that his "research indicates" that Amazon is developing a "similar product," though he says that it hasn't officially "kicked off" yet. Kuo says that if no delays hit the project, it should go into mass production in 2026 or 2027. In comparison, Apple's much-rumored 18.8-inch foldable tablet/note PC/monitor is supposed to go into production in 2027 or 2028. Display analyst Ross Young hopped into the X thread saying he's known about a "foldable Amazon tablet for some time." Kuo responded, saying that Amazon has been researching it for a while. You rarely get two leakers directly agreeing with one another about a potential future product. We don't have any other details about what kind of device Amazon might be making beyond a tablet. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Largely, Apple's rumored foldable device is supposed to be giant with an 18.8-inch display. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman claimed it would look like "two iPad Pros side-by-side." Huawei's MateBook Fold features a 13-inch screen in laptop mode. It has two virtual screens and a built-in soft keyboard. Crazily, it's not cheap, costing 23,999 yuan (about $3,330) for the base model, which features 32GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. Those are eye-popping numbers even for Apple products. It could be argued that the Huawei XT Mate triple-folding phone is just the company's attempt to be first, and the price doesn't really matter. Meanwhile, 2027 looks like the year of the foldable as Apple finally joins the fray against whatever Samsung is doing by then, and potentially Amazon will throw its hat into the ring.

Apple foldable with 18.8-inch display might launch with an Amazon rival

Over the past few months, one of the more intriguing Apple-related leaks has revolved around the company's ongoing development of foldable devices. Not only is Apple rumoured to launch its first-ever foldable phone with a 7.8-inch internal display in 2026, but the company is also said to be working on a massive 18.8-inch foldable iPad or laptop — or whatever Apple eventually decides to market it as when the product finally the latest development, well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that Amazon is also internally testing a similar large-screen device. If all goes according to plan, the device could enter production in late 2026 or 2027. Source: Ming Chi Kuo/ X (formerly Twitter) In the same post, shared via X (formerly Twitter), Kuo also noted that Apple's large-screen foldable is now expected to enter production in late 2027 or 2028. For those unfamiliar with the project, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman discussed Apple's large foldable in his newsletter back in December. He wrote, 'Apple designers are developing something akin to a giant iPad that unfolds into the size of two iPad Pros side-by-side. The Cupertino, California-based company has been honing the product for a couple of years now and is aiming to bring something to market around 2028, I'm told Last week, a document alleging to show Apple's display plans was posted on X. It indicated the iPhone maker aims to use an 18.8-inch foldable screen between 2028 and 2030. That generally lines up with what I've heard about an Apple foldable computer.'advertisementEven Gurman isn't entirely certain whether the product will be marketed as a giant iPad or a foldable MacBook. That said, if you want a rough idea of how this kind of device might actually look — you don't have to wait three to five Huawei MateBook Fold Ultimate is a thin and light laptop with a massive 18-inch OLED display that folds in half, similar to how we are used to seeing on foldable phones. Quite literally, in one of its use cases, you can open it like a giant digital magazine and use both screens side by again, this is Apple we're talking about. The company has never aimed to be first with the latest tech — instead, it waits, refines, and releases a version that is often the most polished and user-ready on the for Amazon, while it's interesting to hear they're working on a similar device, the company doesn't exactly have a glowing track record when it comes to hardware success in the consumer space. Still, it's an intriguing avenue — and given how few options there are in this segment right now, it's clear there's a gap waiting to be filled. Whether the mainstream market will be ready for this kind of form factor in a few years is something only time will Apple succeed? Historically, its user base has been quick to adopt new form factors when the company gets them right. And while a device like the Huawei MateBook Fold Ultimate — as capable as it is — is only available in China, Apple entering the scene is bound to change the landscape. As for Amazon, we'll just have to wait and see.
