Apple may launch iPhone base and Pro models separately from 2026

Apple may be changing their release schedule next year by splitting the launch of their flagship phones. Reports by 9to5Mac and The Information reveal that the move is to push iPhone sales as they are stagnating. The cheaper budget iPhone models will be launched in the first half of the year while the Pro models will arrive later in the fall. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said that next year Apple will be releasing the iPhone 17e probably around March or April. Then, in the latter half, Apple will release the advanced versions: iPhone 18 range including the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone 18 Slim and a foldable model. Meanwhile, Kuo predicts the iPhone 18 basic model to be launched in the first-half of 2027 along with iPhone 18e. This could be the first time Apple won't launch all of its models at the same time. The schedule for this year will remain unchanged with the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone 17 Slim coming out probably in September. Kuo added that the hardware maker is primarily trying to tackle an intense competitive environment in China by shifting launch dates closer to rivals. This is also the reason why Apple is making more models of iPhone like the upcoming foldable model. Additionally, spreading out the releases also means users will have time to focus on the different models and not overshadowed by just the Pro versions.

Foldable and slim iPhones could soon become the new norm

Apple's iPhone lineup is about to go through a huge shift, at least if this leak is to be believed — as will our list of the best smartphones. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo outlined the predicted release window for every single iPhone up until the second half of 2027, and we're seeing new products becoming the new norm, and a shift in Apple's usual release strategy to make room for them. Corroborating an earlier report from The Information, Ming-Chi Kuo laid out Apple's plans for its upcoming iPhones, and there are a few interesting tidbits in here. First, we might see Apple ditch the release calendar we got used to, as it was in place since 2011. The iPhone lineup is now said to be split, with the budget phones being released early in the year and the high-end portion of the lineup following in the second half. In fact, this schedule that's so familiar to us is now said to come to an end in 2025, and 2026 will usher in a completely new release schedule for the iPhone. Recommended Videos Following Kuo's predictions, we'll see the iPhone 17 emerge in the second half of 2025. This includes the iPhone 17 Pro Max, the iPhone 17 Pro, the iPhone 17 Slim, and the base iPhone 17. This will be followed by the iPhone 17e, breaking cover in the first half of 2026. That's a predictable release cadence, with the iPhone 17e launching about a year after the release of its predecessor. The second half of 2026 is when the shift begins, and the focus moves from base iPhones to Apple's newer products, including the foldable iPhone and the iPhone Slim. We'll see the launch of the first foldable iPhone, as well as the iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone 18 Pro, and iPhone 18 Slim. Those hoping for the base model of the iPhone 18 will need to wait longer. This kind of shift lets Apple shine a light on its new, hotly anticipated foldables and the slimmer iPhone, and quite right, too, as they're set to make a reappearance soon after. The first half of 2027 will see the launch of the base iPhone 18 and the iPhone 18e, but the second half will, once again, be littered with exciting products, including the second-gen foldable iPhone, the iPhone 19 Pro Max, iPhone 19 Pro, and the iPhone 19 Slim. With a focus on the high-end products in the second half of the year, Apple might benefit from the holiday season and push its more expensive, newer products forward. Meanwhile, the base and budget-oriented options will follow later, during a lull in the market, and around the same time as Samsung's yearly Android release — keeping the spotlight on Apple all-year-round. Apple may not launch iPhone 16e successor with iPhone 17 series: Report

Apple is uncertain whether it will make the launch of its 'e' series model an annual tradition, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. For context, the US-based technology giant, in a surprise move, introduced the iPhone 16e, expanding its iPhone 16 series to five models. The iPhone 16e launch took place in 2025, separate from the rest of the iPhone 16 models released in September 2024. As such, the iPhone 16e successor may not launch alongside the iPhone 17 series. This does not necessarily mean there will be no iPhone 17e model, but the situation remains unclear. iPhone 16e's market positioning The iPhone 16e represents a notable redesign compared to the iPhone SE 3, despite being a more affordable, pared-down version of the iPhone 16. A key strategy Apple employed to boost the iPhone 16e's appeal, particularly in markets such as China, was to brand it as part of the iPhone 16 family rather than introducing it as a new iPhone SE model. This shift in marketing gives the device broader mainstream appeal, potentially helping it stand out in a competitive market. The key question now is whether Apple will continue the "e" series with annual refreshes. Gurman noted that Apple has not made a final decision and it may be several months before one is reached. If Apple decides to introduce an iPhone 17e, it would likely follow the release timeline of previous iPhone SE models — launching in late winter or early spring, which would be around a year after the debut of the iPhone 16e. iPhone 17e: What to expect According to a report by 9To5Mac, the iPhone 17e is expected to feature some upgrades, including the new A19 chip and possibly a few features from the iPhone 17 line-up. One feature that could be added is Camera Control, which is absent from the iPhone 16e. These enhancements are likely to be modest, maintaining the device's positioning as an affordable option while integrating some of the latest advancements. At this stage, Apple has not confirmed any plans for an iPhone 17e, and it may be some time before more concrete information surfaces. However, 9To5Mac notes that many industry observers believe that annual updates to the "e" series would be a logical move, helping Apple remain competitive in the budget smartphone segment, where consumers seek high-performance devices at more accessible prices.

iPhone 17e: Is Apple working on a new ‘budget' model for 2026? Here's what we know

iPhone 16e launched in February earlier this year and has since proven to be a popular model among those who do not wish to splurge on a vanilla iPhone 16. It costs ₹20,000 less (costs ₹59,900) than the iPhone 16, which is priced at ₹79,900. It is essentially similar to the iPhone 16 but comes with some trade-offs, including the lack of a Dynamic Island and the missing ultrawide camera. However, the core experience remains the same, featuring the Apple A18 chipset and Apple Intelligence features. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, in his latest PowerOn newsletter, mentioned that the big question lies in whether Apple will update this new line annually going forward. He states that Apple has not made a final decision regarding the iPhone 17e, and that the company is still 'months away from needing to do so.' Gurman also says on the iPhone 16e, saying that the use of the 'e' name instead of 'SE' was a marketing move, as it adds more appeal and certainly makes it more attractive to consumers in countries like China. Also Read: Google Pixel phones may finally get 'Double Tap To Lock Screen' feature: Report Considering that Apple launched the iPhone 16e earlier this year during springtime, it would not be out of the ordinary to see a potential iPhone 17e launch during the same timeframe next year, creating a full year's gap between the two models. It will be interesting to see what changes Apple eventually introduces, whether it adds the camera control button that debuted with the iPhone 16 models but was notably missing from the iPhone 16e, or whether it introduces the Dynamic Island, which is arguably a more premium feature compared to the notch. If a new model does arrive, it could feature updated internals, as Apple has historically done with the iPhone SE line, updating the specifications while maintaining a similar design. That said, it must be noted Apple has not confirmed the existence of the iPhone 17e, and no reports currently point definitively towards its launch. If it does come out, Apple will have to make a decision soon. Also Read: Apple Watch Series 11: What to expect from this year's big smartwatch update
