WhatsApp will STOP working on these phones – is your device on the list?
WhatsApp will STOP working on these phones – is your device on the list? Pretoria residents could soon find themselves unable to send messages or make calls on WhatsApp, as the popular messaging app stops working on older phones. Affected users are urged to check if their device is on the list and update or upgrade before it's too late. The Meta-owned messaging platform has raised its minimum operating system standards, prompting the end of support for devices that cannot meet the new criteria. To continue using WhatsApp, iPhones must be updated to iOS 15.1 or later, while Android phones must run on Android 5.1 or newer. Devices running older systems will no longer be able to use WhatsApp's messaging and calling features. These iPhones will lose WhatsApp support: iPhone 5s iPhone 6 iPhone 6 Plus (Note: iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, and iPhone SE (1st gen) are still safe if updated.) These Android phones will no longer work with WhatsApp: Samsung Galaxy S4 Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Sony Xperia Z1 LG G2 Huawei Ascend P6 Moto G (1st Gen) HTC One X Any Android phone running version 5.0 or earlier is affected. Pretoria residents are advised to check their device's software version and update if possible — or consider upgrading — to avoid being cut off from WhatsApp's messaging and calling features. WhatsApp no longer works on these older phones – is yours affected?
Apps stopping support for older hardware is a normal occurrence – but it's still inconvenient for those affected. WhatsApp has announced it's stopping hardware support for three key iPhones and numerous Android phones stuck on older operating systems. WhatsApp will now require iOS 15.1 or later or Android 5.1 or later. That means that three iPhones are now no longer supported – the colorful 2013 iPhone 5s as well as 2014's iPhone 6 and the first larger iPhone, the 6 Plus. Some have suggested this also includes the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, and the iPhone SE (1st gen) but as those are newer devices they are OK for the moment. However, it's highly likely things will change when the app next drops support for certain devices. Android phones running 5.0 Lollipop or earlier are now no longer supported including some popular models from around a decade ago such as the 2012 Samsung Galaxy S3 and 2013 HTC One X. These phones are obviously all rather old now, so nobody should be surprised at the dropping of support, but they may still be in use as second devices or by those who have had no need to upgrade. You're still able to back up your chats to iCloud for the iPhone or Google Drive for Android before you move to a new device. Go to WhatsApp Settings > Chats > Chat Backup. If you don't know what operating system you're running go to Settings > General > About on iOS or Settings > About phone on an Android device. It's certainly been a busy time for WhatsApp – the Meta-owned app recently debuted its iPad app….. 15 years after the device first launched.

Surprise new WhatsApp deadline just blocked these iPhones from popular chat app
If WhatsApp has suddenly stopped working on your iPhone, there's a reason why. Early last month, Mirror Online published an alert after WhatsApp confirmed that some iPhone models were about to lose support for the popular chat service. The original deadline was set for May 5, but it appears those using older models of Apple's smartphone were given a reprieve, with the messaging service continuing to stay active. Sadly, as spotted by the team at 9to5mac, that lifeline has now ended with a trio of iPhone models officially blocked from sending chats, joining groups or making calls. The update, which affects the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, has been enforced due to these devices no longer being able to upgrade to newer iOS operating systems. For WhatsApp to work, call makers need to be running iOS 15 or later and that's not something available on those ageing iPhones. Explaining more, WhatsApp said, "Currently, we provide support for and recommend using the following devices: Android running OS 5.0 and newer iPhone running iOS 15.1 and newer. "Once you have one of these devices, install WhatsApp and register your phone number. Devices and software change often, so we regularly review what operating systems we support and make updates. "Every year we look at which devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest users. These devices also might not have the latest security updates, or might lack the functionality required to run WhatsApp." If you are still using an iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus and love WhatsApp, you will now need to switch to something new. It's worth remembering that Apple now offers its latest Apple Intelligence upgrade, which includes features such as automatic image editing, copy editing and the ability to sort your inbox. If that sounds enticing and you are updating your current device you'll to buy an iPhone 15 Pro or any iPhone 16 model as these are the only compatible devices.

Popular instant messaging platform WhatsApp has officially pulled the plug on support for a range of older smartphones Image: Freepik Popular instant messaging platform WhatsApp has officially discontinued support for a range of older smartphones, rendering the app unusable on devices running outdated operating systems as of June 1, 2025. The move affects a range of ageing smartphones, including Apple's iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, as well as older Android models like the Samsung Galaxy S III, HTC One X, and Sony Xperia. These devices are reportedly no longer compatible with the app's minimum software requirements. Originally, WhatsApp had planned to implement the change on May 5, but the cutoff date was reportedly delayed and finalised for June 1, 2025. In its FAQ, WhatsApp said it regularly reviews supported operating systems to keep up with changing devices and software. "Devices and software change often, so we regularly review what operating systems we support and make updates," the Meta-owned app said." "Every year, we look at which devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest users. These devices also might not have the latest security updates or might lack the functionality required to run WhatsApp." Meta's messaging app also reminded users that before support for their operating system is discontinued, they will receive notifications within WhatsApp, including several reminders to upgrade. "Before we stop supporting your operating system, you'll be notified in WhatsApp and reminded a few times to upgrade. We'll update this page regularly to ensure that the latest operating systems that we support are listed." Cape Argus
