So, what do the experts make of the new iPhone 16e?
The iPhone 16e is finally here. Apple released the long-awaited successor to the iPhone SE 3 on Wednesday, and tech sites everywhere have been quick to have their say. In case you missed the unveil, the new handset, called the iPhone 16e, is Apple Intelligence-ready and features a 6.1-inch OLED display (with a notch) that, in a first for the renamed SE series, covers the entire front of the handset. But the iPhone 16e starts at $599, which is $170 more than the iPhone SE 3 that it's replaced. Skipping across to the the first reports from professional phone critics, Digital Trends described the iPhone 16e as 'everything we hoped for,' adding that 'if you've been looking out for a cost-effective way to get into iPhone ownership, it should probably be at the top of your list.' Gizmodo looked at what the iPhone 16e can't — rather than can — do, pointing out things like its lack of MagSafe charging. It also called into question its 'budget-friendly' status, comparing its $599 price tag to better-priced alternatives from competitors. The Verge asked a bunch of its writers for their personal take — one loved that Apple included the customizable Action Button to its newest, most affordable handset, while someone else also lamented the absence of MagSafe. Another really liked the screen size, describing it as 'the perfect medium between too big and too small.' In its take, TechRadar found the notch 'odd,' saying that it 'feels like a throwback,' but it said that with all of its new features, including a 48-megapixel main camera, it 'truly feels like a part of the new [iPhone 16] family.' Cnet noted the new phone's readiness for Apple Intelligence, but said the iPhone 16e 'has a curious value proposition,' adding: 'On paper, it seems like an upgrade in nearly every way to the iPhone SE, but it lacks the iPhone SE's main appeals: a low price and a small design.' Phone Arena also focused on the price, calling it 'a disappointment for buyers on a budget.' But at the same time it noted that 'the iPhone 16e beats the competition in performance speeds and video quality.' 'The iPhone 16e is the cheap phone to beat,' proclaimed ZDNet, while speculating as to what the 'e' in 16e stands for, suggesting economy, enhanced, essential, exceptional, expansive, and extra as possible contenders. Apple Insider claims that with the new iPhone 16e, the tech giant is 'very clearly setting out its stall' that the new handset 'is for people who last bought an iPhone in 2019 or 2020' — in other words, the iPhone 11 and 12. Overall, the news sites appeared to agree that the iPhone 16e is a significant update to Apple's entry-level smartphone, though opinions varied on whether its features justify the increased price when compared to the previous SE model.

iPhone SE 4 tipped to launch today – here's everything we know about Apple's next budget phone
It's been almost three years since Apple last launched a budget smartphone. While those with deeper pockets have been able to fork out upwards of £800 for the latest flagship iPhone 16, those looking for a more affordable option have been left waiting. Now, the tech giant could finally be ready to give its budget phone a long-overdue refresh. Today, Apple will launch something new, and if the leaks are to be believed, it will be a new iPhone SE 4. The iPhone SE 3 hit shelves in 2022 but, while relatively affordable, it always felt like a relic. It had chunky bezels, a honking home button, and a recycled design lifted straight from the iPhone 8 blueprint. The next iteration could give the phone a much-needed upgrade, with rumours suggesting it will feature a larger display, Face ID, a switch to USB-C and a new name that helps it keep in-line with the iPhone 16. While the phone was first rumoured to launch last week, Apple instead decided to unveil the Powerbeats Pro 2 earbuds, and launch of Apple TV+ on Android. With a new launch happening today (19 February), though, it's most likely go time for the latest affordable handset. Here's everything we know so far... Apple iPhone SE 4 release date Last week, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced a new launch will take place today (19 February). Cook told fans to 'get ready to meet the newest member of the family'. While he didn't elaborate further, the newest member of the family is most likely the relatively affordable iPhone SE 4, though, he could also be talking about the 11th-generation iPad, or the rumoured MacBook Air M4, or even a new second-generation AirTag – Apple's got a lot of devices up its sleeve in the coming weeks. Whatever it is, we should find out sometime today, and all signs right now point to it being a new iPhone SE 4. Apple iPhone SE 4 price: How much could the handset cost? The iPhone SE has always been Apple's cheapest iPhone – and we don't expect that to change with the SE 4. That said, it's likely to see a price increase. When it launched in 2022, the iPhone SE 3 started at £419 for the 64GB model, but with iPhone prices creeping up in recent years, the next iteration could follow suit. For context, the iPhone 14 launched at £779 in 2022, while the iPhone 16 now costs £799 – a £20 increase. The iPhone 16 Pro has jumped by £50 compared to the iPhone 14 Pro, while the Pro Max has seen the steepest rise – £150 more expensive than its 2022 counterpart. If Apple follows a similar pricing trend with the SE 4, the budget iPhone could creep closer to the £450-£500 mark. That would also put it more in line with the competition. Google's budget handset – the Pixel 8a – launched at £499, while the Samsung Galaxy A55 debuted at £439. According to a Japanese carrier leak, the iPhone SE 4 could see a $70 price increase in the US, bringing it to $499 – the same price as the Google Pixel 8a. If the UK gets a similar price hike, the iPhone SE 4 could cost £489. Apple iPhone SE 4 design, display and name Rumours about the iPhone SE 4's design have been circulating since 2023, with most suggesting that the new budget smartphone will resemble the iPhone 14. At the end of 2023, sources told MacRumors that the next iPhone SE will have the body and display of the base iPhone 14, with a few distinct changes. According to the publication, the iPhone SE 4 will feature a 6.1in OLED display and a near bezel-less design, similar to the iPhone 14. It will also ditch the home button (and Touch ID) in favour of Face ID. This would be a big upgrade for the smartphone, which has always used a cheaper LCD panel. The phone could also have a USB-C port, like the iPhone 15 and later models, as well as an action button on the side in place of the mute switch. However, it reportedly won't have a Dynamic Island, instead sticking with the notch. Last month, a video of a dummy unit surfaced online, showing the rumoured iPhone SE 4 with a notch, action button, USB-C port and a single rear camera. Interestingly, several leakers have also claimed the iPhone SE 4 will be renamed the iPhone 16E, suggesting it could be a more budget-friendly version of the current line-up, potentially supporting Apple Intelligence and featuring the same chipset. Apple iPhone SE 4 specs and features That name change seems even more likely when you look at the potential specs of the upcoming handset. New iPhone SE models always come equipped with the latest chipset from the previous year – meaning it could get the iPhone 16's powerful A18 chipset, enabling it to take advantage of Apple Intelligence features. According to Mark Gurman, these features will be available on the iPhone SE 4. Last year, Gurman also claimed the iPhone SE 4 will be the first iPhone to use a 5G modem manufactured entirely by Apple instead of one from Qualcomm. He says this modem will be more efficient, consume less power, and provide better support for network connections. Apple iPhone SE 4 camera While the upcoming iPhone SE 4 is rumoured to feature a significant camera upgrade over the iPhone SE 3, it's still expected to stick with a single-camera system on the rear. One report suggests it will be equipped with a single 48MP rear camera, the same as the main camera on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16. The iPhone SE 3, by comparison, only has a 12MP rear camera. The front-facing camera is also expected to see an upgrade, reportedly increasing from a 7MP selfie camera to a 12MP lens. Of course, everything here should be taken with a pinch of salt – until we hear it from Apple itself, nothing is official. But we're certainly intrigued. The iPhone 14 is the device the iPhone SE 4 is rumoured to look like most but, unlike the predicted iPhone SE 4's single camera system, the iPhone 14 has a dual-camera setup on the rear. Our tech critic, David Phelan, gave the phone 4.5 out of 5 stars in his review. 'This is a fast and attractive smartphone, with Apple's excellent design and build quality, the now-routine features, such as water resistance and strong screen, and a significantly improved camera,' he said. Now, you can pick up the iPhone 14 with £100 off at Amazon.

Someone squeezed an iPhone SE 3 into a Nokia Lumia 1020, and it looks amazing
The Nokia Lumia 1020 is back, well, sort of. An enterprising tech enthusiast (and Redditor) has stuffed the innards of an Apple iPhone SE 3 into a Lumia 1020 case to create something called the 'NokiApple LumiPhone 1020 SE." This is a fully-functioning smartphone that, more importantly, looks really awesome. It's more than just an iPhone SE wrapped in a Lumia case. Redditor OceanDepth95028 kicked the project up a few notches by ensuring that the iPhone internals work with a fingerprint reader on the back of the device. They also added a custom SIM card slot and made the Lightning port look like a micro-USB port, as originally reported by 9to5Mac. Modder fits a 2022 iPhone into a 2013 Lumia 1020 body. Everything inside the device is from the 2022 iPhone SE 3, the last iPhone with rounded edges and a physical home button. "The only aspect from the 1020 is the outer shell and display glass." — Antonio Vieira Santos (@AkwyZ) February 17, 2025 Not only does this phone function, it even supports 5G. It also receives OTA updates, which makes sense considering that it's, essentially, a working iPhone SE 3. The maker had to move some buttons around to get everything to fit and they took liberties with the camera button, which can now act as a volume key switch or a shutter button. The iPhone SE 3 uses the A15 Bionic chip, so this frankenphone is capable of running modern apps. The gadget's designer says, despite being a one-off project, this device could be used as an everyday smartphone. The only caveats? The Redditor couldn't get Apple Pay or wireless charging to work. But still, look at this thing! It's very pretty, thanks to the design of the original Lumia 1020. after all these years, the nokia lumia 1020 remains one of the most beautifully designed phones ever — keshav (@keshavchan) January 27, 2025 For the uninitiated, the Nokia Lumia 1020 came out in the latter half of 2013. It was one of the more popular phones that ran the now-defunct Windows Phone OS, thanks to its signature look and the fantastic camera system. The iPhone SE is Apple's budget smartphone and, lo and behold, a new entry is reportedly headed our way in the near future.

Here's Everything Apple Might Release in the Next Few Weeks
Apple boss Tim Cook recently dropped a teaser on X using the hashtag #AppleLaunch, inviting us to "Get ready to meet the newest member of the family" without actually announcing an Apple event. Rumors are swirling there could be multiple announcements in the coming weeks, so here's what could be coming in February. Since the first model in 2018, the iPhone SE has been Apple's most affordable and compact handset. We've since had two refreshes, in 2020 and 2022, and the rumor mill is abuzz with predictions of an iPhone SE 4 releasing in spring 2025. The device is expected to continue the tradition of being the least expensive iPhone, priced around $450 or $499 (iPhone SE 3 is $429). Apple""> That being said, the biggest news should be the rumored redesign; the iPhone SE 4 is expected to ditch the Home button, lose the outdated "forehead" at the top and the "chin" at the bottom, and bring skinnier bezels in favor of a fullscreen appearance like current iPhones. The redesign should allow for a 6.1-inch display in roughly the same housing as the current model. Another major display upgrade should be an edge-to-edge OLED panel instead of an LCD, bringing much darker blacks and brighter whites, better color accuracy, and HDR support. The iPhone SE 4 is expected to have the old-school notch, not the Dynamic Island. It's unclear whether the handset will use a Touch ID fingerprint scanner built into the power button or use Face ID. Apple has been building Face ID into iPhones since 2017, and the economies of scale could make Face ID on iPhone SE 4 a reality. iPhone SE 3 is the last remaining model with Touch ID and a Lightning connector, so a modernized design with Face ID and USB-C sounds exciting. iPhone SE 4 is also rumored to bring Apple's first custom modem chip, feature a single rear camera upgraded from 12 to 48MP, and run Apple Intelligence via the same A18 chip that's in the iPhone 16, including features like Genmoji, Image Playground, Writing Tools, and more. Apple's most popular laptop is ripe for a refresh. The MacBook Air stock at Apple stores is dwindling, and references to unreleased models are present in new versions of macOS, indicating an imminent release. Current Airs were last updated with M3 chips in March 2024, so both 13 and 15-inch models are expected to see an Apple M4 upgrade. The chip debuted in May 2024 and currently powers the iMac all-in-one, the 14-inch MacBook Pro, and the latest iPad Pro and Mac mini. It sports a 10-core CPU, a 10-core GPU, and 16GB of RAM for base configurations. Apple has actually doubled the RAM across base M4 Macs to 16GB to make Apple Intelligence run better. If you own an M3 Air, expect only modest performance and graphics improvements from an M4-equipped MacBook Air. The next MacBook Air is expected to have the same design as the M3 model, which was redesigned in 2022. We're not expecting new screen sizes or OLED panels. However, an ultrawide 12-megapixel camera with support for Center Stage and Desk View would certainly be welcome given the terrible MacBook Air 1080p potato cam. Apple will probably discontinue all M3-based MacBook Airs when the new machines arrive except the base 13-inch model, which we expect to take the $999 spot currently occupied by the 13-inch M2 Air. The current M2 model dropped in May 2024 as the first Air with two display sizes (11 and 13 inches), Apple Pencil Pro compatibility, and a landscape FaceTime camera (like on iPad and iPad Pro) so you don't look sideways on video calls. The next iPad Air is expected to use a better chip and new accessories, with no notable design changes over the 2024 models. Apple might also offer an updated Magic Keyboard for the next iPad Air, which apparently won't sport an aluminum top case like its iPad Pro counterpart. The rumor mill is divided over the chip, with some sources calling for an M3 upgrade and others saying the seventh-generation iPad Air will skip the M3 chip and adopt the M4 instead. Like current M2 Airs, M3 or M4-equipped ones will also support Apple Intelligence. M1 iPad Air owners should expect a 30% faster performance from an M3 iPad Air, but the speed difference won't be as pronounced for folks upgrading from the M2-based iPad Air models. The M3 and M4 chips are built on TSMC's 3nm process, with the M3 chip delivering a modest 15-20% speed jump compared to the base M2 one on the current Air. Apple's budget tablet, called just "iPad," costs $349. The current tenth-generation model arrived in 2022, featuring a larger 10.9-inch screen with a landscape camera, USB-C instead of Lightning, and Apple's 5nm A14 chip. The upcoming eleventh-generation iPad is said to offer just a speed bump via the Apple A16 or A17 Pro chip and nothing else. We sincerely hope it's the latter, because the A16 chip does not support Apple Intelligence. Apple currently offers the older $329 iPad 9 alongside the iPad 10. When the iPad 11 arrives, we expect the iPad 10 to continue selling for $20 less. The A16 offers modest speed gains compared to the A14, with about 16% faster single-threaded and 22% faster multithreaded benchmarks. The A17 Pro offers far more noticeable speed gains despite the same number of CPU and GPU cores as the A14, due to architectural improvements like the 3nm process and hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading support. Some developers were invited to an Apple VisionOS event on February 27. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says this will be about the new features in visionOS 2.4: a new Spatial content app, a revamped guest mode, and Apple Intelligence. He says the visionOS 2.4 beta will be released this week ahead of release sometime in April. The development has sparked speculation that Apple will swap the M2 chip powering Vision Pro for a new M5 chip. If there's a hardware refresh, perhaps a price drop will be on the cards because Apple is running out of shoppers willing to burn $3500 on an AR headset. Apple released a new mid-cycle iPhone color in 2017, 2018, 2021, 2022, and 2023 to revitalize sales and renew interest in the handset. In 2023, for example, we got the yellow iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. While far from certain, Apple's upcoming launches could bring a new iPhone 16 color in addition to the current color Black, White, Teal, Pink, and Ultramarine color finishes. Apple has offered its AirTag personal item tracker since 2021. The update should bring Apple's second-generation Ultra Wideband chip that debuted in the iPhone 15 lineup. The chip is said to extend the range three times, enhancing the Precision Finding feature in the Find My app, but not much else is known about its capabilities. AirTags are the best Bluetooth trackers available for iPhones, giving you convenient access to your belongings and tracking with Apple's global Find My network. The current AirTag can use Precision Finding within 10 to 15 meters. Compare this with the iPhone 15 models, which support Precision Finding up to 60 meters. Apple could also unveil its rumored smart command center for the connected home. The company is said to have multiple smart home accessories in the works, including a smart soundbar combining Apple TV and HomePod functionality and a tabletop robotic home device as part of a renewed smart home push. Theoretically speaking, the company could preview a smart home hub now ahead of its release later in 2025. However, we think a dedicated event would be much more suitable for such an announcement. With several Apple products due for their annual refresh and rumors of new products in the works, Apple could have comfortably held a dedicated event in February. Instead, it looks like the iPhone maker has opted to reveal its surprises one by one in a series of press releases to maximize exposure like it did with an "exciting week of announcements" last year.
