Don't like the current BMW designs? Worry not, they're all changing soon

But for those who are not in favour of the current status quo, there is potentially good news on the horizon. BMW is about to implement a brand new design language across its full line-up of cars and SUVs. You've already seen strong hints of it in the Neue Klasse Concept sedan and its X-badged SUV counterpart. The BMW Neue Klasse X Concept foretells the imminent iX3 replacement. But now it appears that BMW's internal combustion engined (ICE) line-up will also be remodeled to fit in with the 'Neue Klasse' design theme. Autocar reports that BMW will 'completely overhaul' its current ICE range, starting with a significant facelift for the current 5-Series, but with redesigns and significant updates also scheduled for the rest of the BMW range, from 2 Series to X5 and 7 Series. BMW's design head Adrian van Hoodonk told the UK publication that the updates were necessary as the company didn't want the new-age models to make the current cars appear like previous generation products. 'We will make sure that the form language that we are developing now - and starting this year at the IAA with the first of the Neue Klasse vehicles - will be rolled out over the entire product portfolio, leaving no car behind,' Van Hoodonk told Autocar. 'Of course, it would not be good for us or for our customers if there would be a new type of BMW and a 'classic' type of BMW. We're going to change the look and feel of the BMW brand.'

BMW Design Shift Is About to Change Everything

BMW is embarking on a full-scale design revolution that will transform every vehicle in its portfolio. Dubbed the BMW Design Shift, this sweeping change will begin with the highly anticipated iX3 electric SUV, set to debut later this year, and extend to every model in the Bavarian automaker's lineup within the next four years. This bold move represents more than just a new look—it marks a strategic pivot in BMW's design identity. At the heart of the BMW Design Shift is the Neue Klasse design language, a minimalist, forward-thinking aesthetic first showcased in 2023 through concept vehicles. Now, this design vision is going mainstream. Group design chief Adrian van Hooydonk confirmed that the BMW Design Shift is not limited to electric models. Every car in BMW's stable—from the sporty 2 Series to the luxurious 7 Series and rugged X models—will adopt the new styling. 'We're ensuring that the Neue Klasse design becomes the defining face of every BMW,' van Hooydonk stated, noting that the rollout begins this year and will leave 'no car behind.' Interestingly, the transformation will start with the recently updated 5 Series sedan. Despite launching a new generation in 2023, the 5 Series will receive a visual refresh incorporating the Neue Klasse design. Although it remains on the current CLAR platform, this facelifted model will serve as the vanguard of the BMW Design Shift. Other key models, including the X5, X2, X7, and 2 Series, will follow shortly. Product development head Bernd Körber emphasized the speed and scope of the initiative, stating that the BMW Design will be completed within just three and a half years. This accelerated timeline reflects BMW's urgency to unify its brand image across all powertrains—combustion, hybrid, and electric. While the Neue Klasse aesthetic will bring cohesion to the brand, BMW assures fans that individuality won't be sacrificed. Each model will retain unique design elements and character traits, ensuring that the Design Shift enhances diversity rather than eliminating it. Initially intended exclusively for EVs, the Neue Klasse approach has since been extended to gas-powered models as well. The massive kidney grilles that once dominated BMW's front-end styling are expected to be replaced by sleeker, more refined surfaces and restrained detailing—hallmarks of the new design philosophy. The BMW Design Shift isn't just a cosmetic update—it's a statement about the brand's future. With a lineup that will soon speak a common design language, BMW is positioning itself to remain a leader in both innovation and visual identity as the industry evolves.

BMWs Will Look Very Different Very Soon

BMW's next era of design starts with the iX3 electric SUV, which is scheduled to debut before the end of the year. But it won't be the only vehicle in the Bavarian brand's lineup to get the Neue Klasse look. According to Group design boss Adrian van Hooydonk, every BMW will have a 'Neue' face—and soon. In an interview with Autocar , van Hooydonk said that BMW's new design language will roll out on every model. Even though it just debuted in 2023, the 5 Series sedan will be the first vehicle to get the new look, although, as a facelift, it will remain on its current CLAR architecture. The 5 Series redesign will be followed by the X5, 2 Series, X2, 7 Series, and X7. BMW M3 EV Rendering "We will make sure that the form language that we are developing now—and starting this year at the IAA [Munich] with the first of the Neue Klasse vehicles—will be rolled out over the entire product portfolio, leaving no car behind," said van Hooydonk. Product boss Bernd Körber reiterated van Hooydonk's statement, noting that the new design rollout won't take long. It will happen, "within three and a half years across the entire portfolio," Körber notes. But don't worry, this doesn't mean every BMW will have the same cookie-cutter Neue Klasse look. Van Hooydonk confirmed that, while every BMW will have a familial resemblance, each model will have its "own distinct character traits." BMW iX3 Rendering Photo by: BMW originally planned to limit the Neue Klasse design language to its EVs, but the company confirmed back in October that the design direction would make its way to gas models as well. Previewed by the Neue Klasse concept in 2023 and the Neue Klasse X crossover, BMW will likely ditch its massive kidney grille for a smoother front fascia and subtler design elements. BMW is priming updates for ALL of its combustion-engined cars, kicking off a new era

Total overhaul of BMW line-up comes as firm brings existing models in line with new iX3 and 3 Series Open gallery Close BMW will completely overhaul its current combustion-powered line-up, starting with a heavily updated 5 Series, to bring these models into line with a range of incoming Neue Klasse electric cars. The new-era EVs will begin with the unveiling of the iX3 at the Munich motor show in September and this will kick-start a rapid-fire refresh programme for BMW, which is working to ensure its current-generation models are not outpaced by newer siblings. The next 3 Series will follow shortly after the iX3 and use the same EV-first architecture, which, in time, will be the base for all BMWs. Before then, though, BMW will redesign and substantially upgrade models that are not yet due for replacement, to ensure a coherent, logical line-up. The first of these will be the 5 Series, due next year. Although the eighth-generation saloon was launched in 2023, recent spy shots reveal that it is already preparing to undergo a significant refresh. This update – which is also destined for the M5 – is centred on a striking, prominent new nose that will bring its design into line with the Neue Klasse models. While nothing has been confirmed, an interior makeover could be on the cards too, given BMW is set to roll out its new Panoramic iDrive set-up. This features a new dashboard, an extended head-up display, a redesigned steering wheel and an angled 17.9in touchscreen – plus the removal of physical buttons. The system will first be used by the iX3 and then adopted by all BMW models. Given it is only a mid-life facelift, the 5 Series will continue to sit on the same CLAR architecture; in the future, all BMWs will use the firm's new electric-first NK platform. Power, too, will come from the same units as today: either a 205bhp mild-hybrid or a 295bhp plug-in hybrid system. Both employ the same 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine. The M5 is also likely to retain its 4.4-litre V8 PHEV set-up that puts out 717bhp. Following the 5 Series revamp, there will also be a new X5 and updated versions of the 2 Series, X2, 7 Series and X7. Speaking to Autocar, product boss Bernd Körber clarified that Neue Klasse refers to 'the next generation of all cars and all toolboxes when it comes to engine, digital, ADAS etc'. He added: 'We will launch the Neue Klasse on a BEV-purpose platform with iX3 and 3 Series, but then the rollout will be within three and a half years across the entire portfolio.' So while the new iX3 and 3 Series will look radically different from the rest of the line-up initially, BMW will quickly implement a more uniform approach to styling and functionality. According to BMW Group design boss Adrian van Hooydonk, this is because the new-era BMW models shouldn't make the current cars appear like a previous generation. 'We will make sure that the form language that we are developing now – and starting this year at the IAA [Munich show] with the first of the Neue Klasse vehicles – will be rolled out over the entire product portfolio, leaving no car behind,' he said. 'Of course, it would not be good for us or for our customers if there would be a new type of BMW and a 'classic' type of BMW. We're going to change the look and feel of the BMW brand.' He added: 'There will be a family resemblance but each car will have its own distinct character traits, just like we have today. But everything will look very new in a short space of time. We're not only launching one car now in September: it will be the beginning of a whole range of new vehicle launches in the next two to three years. We're going to renew pretty much the whole product line-up.' Van Hooydonk said this all-encompassing decision was made in recognition of automotive technology and design advancing faster than ever before. 'Why are we making this much change in design? Because the technology is changing this much. Society's appetite for change has sped up,' he said. As reported by Autocar, the 1 Series is likely to be the next car after the X5 to be replaced by a new-gen Neue Klasse model, probably in 2028. Core models including the 2 Series, 7 Series, X1 and X2 that were introduced only two to three years ago will get a heavier-than-usual facelift by 2029, with the new design language, interior arrangement, powertrain technology and technical functionality. It remains to be seen exactly what the future holds for older model lines such as the 4 Series and 8 Series. There has been no indication yet that new generations are in the works but they are likely to be too close to the end of their natural life cycles to warrant such a significant and expensive round of updates. BMW CEO tells how the company was right on 'Tesla trend', unlike Mercedes, Volkswagen, and Volvo

BMW CEO Oliver Zipse declared victory over rivals in the electric vehicle market strategy , claiming his company's cautious approach has been validated as competitors scale back ambitious EV targets. "We took a clear stand on this, even in the face of strong headwinds. Now the wind has shifted in our direction," Zipse told shareholders on Wednesday. While competitors like Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and Volvo made aggressive commitments to all-electric lineups five years ago, BMW maintained its strategy of offering multiple drivetrain options including combustion engines, hybrids, and electric vehicles. "E-mobility as the sole technology leads to a dead end. That should be obvious by now," Zipse stated, doubling down on BMW's technological flexibility. Legacy automakers have struggled with EV adoption Traditional automakers have faced challenges convincing their established customer base to embrace electric vehicles. Companies including Mercedes and Volvo have recently walked back their earlier EV sales targets as market growth proves slower than anticipated. Even Tesla, the industry's EV pioneer, hasn't been immune to the slowdown. The company experienced its first annual sales decline since the Model Y launch and continued struggling through the first quarter of this year. BMW says it stays flexible while expanding EV offerings Despite advocating for technology openness, BMW isn't avoiding the EV market. The company reported 14% growth in electric vehicle sales last year, with over 426,500 vehicles sold across its BMW, Mini, and Rolls-Royce brands. "Technology openness means following the markets, because markets evolve, but not all at the same pace," Zipse explained. BMW is also preparing to launch the iX3 mid-size electric crossover by year-end, built on its new dedicated EV platform called "Neue Klasse." The company further plans to introduce hydrogen fuel-cell powered vehicles in 2028, maintaining its multi-technology approach in an increasingly uncertain automotive landscape.
