Suspected DUI driver crashes into immigration services office in South LA
Los Angeles police arrested a man for DUI after he crashed into an immigration services office on Friday morning. The California Highway Patrol said the collision happened just before 6:20 a.m. near the intersection of East Gage Avenue and Compton Avenue. The suspect's white SUV crashed through the front of Comunidad Latina Inmigrante. Jesus Chavez, one of the consultants, said he moved his staff to an office next door so they can keep helping the predominantly immigrant neighborhood. "We helped the community to fill out forms and prepare for citizenship, to get their citizenship and provide classes," he said. "Unfortunately, this accident is impacting my office because this community came to my office wanting to receive help for citizenship." Staff said the lobby where the driver crashed through is typically packed with dozens of people waiting for immigration services help. "In the afternoon, I provide classes from 5 to 6 p.m.," Chavez said. "I have approximately 50 to 60 people." The business said they are determined to continue helping the community despite the gaping hole in their building.

Mayor Karen Bass, other Los Angeles leaders set to renew call to end to "reckless immigration raids"
Mayor Karen Bass will be joined by other local leaders in Los Angeles to reiterate their call for the end of what they have described as "discriminatory and reckless" immigration raids across the area. Bass has been an outspoken voice for the immigrant community and LA and has stood against what she calls "unlawful raids from federal agencies." The city joined a lawsuit last month filed by the ACLU challenging the administration's illegal immigration enforcement tactics. Last month, Bass signed an executive directive to support immigrant communities, calling on city departments to develop preparedness plans for federal immigration activity on city property and for departments to have a designated "immigration affairs liaison."

Festivals and Parades Are Canceled Amid US Immigration Anxiety
Pittsburgh had planned to host its first-ever local World Cup this summer, a community soccer competition inspired by the global tournament and aimed at celebrating the city's cultural diversity. The weeks-long event, which was set to begin in June, would have featured teams made up of residents from the city's vast immigrant community, who'd play under the flags of their national origins. But city officials called off the games amid growing anxieties over President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown. The city also canceled its annual International Parade and Festival, which previously brought out vendors and performers from dozens of cultural groups. In a statement from Mayor Ed Gainey's office to Bloomberg, spokesperson Olga George said both events were canceled out of 'an abundance of caution' after consulting with residents and community stakeholders.
