Cops probe upside down Jalur Gemilang

PETALING JAYA : Seberang Perai Utara police have launched an investigation into an incident in which a man had hoisted the Jalur Gemilang upside down. District police chief Anuar Abd Rahman said the authorities were investigating the incident for improper use of emblems and names, insulting behaviour, and improper use of network facilities. 'Police have recorded the statements of the complainant as well as the suspect involved in the incident,' he said in a statement. A video, uploaded at about 12.30pm today, shows a man hoisting the flag, while another was recording it. A report was lodged at the Kepala Batas police station. Anuar reminded the public against sensationalising the matter to avoid disrupting public order. Earlier today, Malaysiakini reported that the hardware shop owner involved in the gaffe said he was measuring the length of an iron pole while hanging the flag and did not notice that the flag was upside down. The owner said he rectified the mistake immediately after realising it. He apologised for the blunder and lodged a report at the Kepala Batas police station to provide an explanation. It was the sixth flag-related incident since January, and the second case of improper handling of flags this month. On Aug 1, SJKC Chung Hua in Port Dickson apologised for mistakenly flying the Jalur Gemilang upside down.

KL graphic designer charged over tweets mocking Islam
KUALA LUMPUR, July 18 — A graphic designer pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here today to a charge of improper use of the network facilities by posting offensive remarks that insulted Islam. Yeo Li Yin, 47, was charged with making and initiating the transmission of offensive communications with the intent to annoy others using the Twitter application under the profile name 'Liyin Yeo' on June 19, 2023. The post was seen at the Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department Office, Wangsa Maju, near here at 2.15 pm on June 22, 2023. The charge, under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, provides a fine of up to RM50,000 or imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year or both and shall be subject to a further fine of RM1,000 for each day the offence continues after conviction. Judge Izralizam Sanusi allowed Yeo bail of RM7,000 with one surety and set Sept 8 for mention. Deputy Public Prosecutor Faizah Khalilah Zaberi appeared for the prosecution, while Yeo was represented by lawyer Rajsurian Pillai. — Bernama

Man pleads guilty to posting offensive comment on Perak sultan
Ariff Zulkarnain Ameer Imam was charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for the improper use of network facilities. PETALING JAYA : A former information technology officer at a media agency pleaded guilty in the Ipoh sessions court today to a charge of posting an offensive comment on social media regarding a decree by Perak's Sultan Nazrin Shah in February. Utusan Malaysia reported that Ariff Zulkarnain Ameer Imam, 50, entered his plea after the charge against him was read before judge Meor Sulaiman Ahmad Tarmizi. He was accused of knowingly posting a comment on an article on the Harian Metro Facebook page about Sultan Nazrin via the Facebook account of 'Ariff Zulkarnain Mohd. Imam'. The comment was sighted at the complaints counter of the Ipoh police headquarters at 5.45pm on Feb 25. The charge was under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for the improper use of network facilities, punishable under Section 233(3) of the same Act. Ariff faces a fine of up to RM50,000, up to two years' imprisonment and an additional RM5,000 fine for every day the offence continues after conviction. The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutors Nasrul Hadi Abdul Ghani and Nurul Hidayu Zakaria, while Ariff was represented by National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer M Saravanan. Nasrul Hadi proposed bail of RM30,000 with two sureties and the additional condition that Ariff report to a nearby police station every month and surrender his passport to the court. Saravanan requested the minimum bail, saying his client was fired for his offence and does not have a fixed income. Meor Sulaiman set bail at RM10,000 with one surety, ordered Ariff to surrender his passport to the court until the case is complete, and set July 30 for sentencing.
