Why is there a Framingham preliminary election only in District 2? What to know
For roughly one-ninth of Framingham's nearly 44,000 registered voters, there are two elections to consider this fall. In addition to the biennial city election, which affects all registered voters and will be held Tuesday, Nov. 4, voters in District 2, which covers much of the city's northeastern section, will be subject to a Sept. 16 preliminary election for a single race. That's because three candidates are vying for the School Committee seat representing District 2. Under the city charter, a preliminary election will be held if more than two candidates complete nomination paperwork for a single position on the ballot. The top two vote-getters in the Sept. 16 preliminary election will appear on the ballot for the Nov. 4 biennial city election. For District 2 only, polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 16. The deadline to register to vote in this elecion is Saturday, Sept. 6. Why is there a preliminary election? Under the city charter, a preliminary election is held if more than two candidates complete nomination paperwork for a single position on the ballot. The preliminary election determines which two candidates appear on the ballot for the Nov. 4 city election. The District 2 School Committee race is the only race this year in which more than two candidates have completed nomination paperwork. That's why none of Framingham's other eight districts has a preliminary election. City Clerk Lisa Ferguson said the city saves about $60,000 by not having a city-wide preliminary election. The deadline to register to vote is 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25, if in person and 11:59 p.m. that day online. For the November city election, there are seven competitve races, including for mayor, and some district city councilor seats and School Committee seats. All public officials are sworn in on Jan. 1. Yokohama Mayor Yamanaka wins second term
Incumbent Yokohama Mayor Takeharu Yamanaka won a second four-year term as head of the capital of Kanagawa Prefecture in Sunday's mayoral election. The 52-year-old independent candidate defeated his five rivals, including author and former Nagano Gov. Yasuo Tanaka, 69, businessman Atsushi Fukuyama, 36, and former Yokohama assembly member Norimi Takahashi, 56. Incumbent Yokohama Mayor Takeharu Yamanaka won a second term on Sunday. | Jiji Yamanaka had support from the Liberal Democratic Party's Yokohama chapter, the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan's prefectural body and Komeito's organization in the city. He pledged to enhance child-rearing support for households and strengthen disaster reduction measures. Also on Sunday, Miyagi Prefecture's capital of Sendai held a mayoral election, in which incumbent Mayor Kazuko Kori, 68, won a third term by defeating three other candidates.
