Folsom State Prison inmate killed; 2 other inmates suspected in attack

Two inmates at Folsom State Prison are suspected of killing another inmate during an alleged attack last week, corrections officials said. According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, inmate Brian J. Diguez was attacked by two other inmates in the prison's dayroom around 6:30 p.m. Friday. Officials said prison staff were able to quickly quell the incident and initiated life-saving measures on Diguez. The 34-year-old was taken to the prison's triage and treatment area. Diguez was pronounced deceased by the Folsom Fire Department at 7:09 p.m. Corrections officials said Diguez was received from Los Angeles County on July 25, 2016. Diguez was serving a 21-year sentence for voluntary manslaughter with an enhancement of Street Gang Act in commission of a serious felony. Officers were able to recover two weapons made by inmates from the scene. Two inmates, identified as 48-year-old Boris Bonilla and 32-year-old Carlos J. Duran, were moved to restricted housing pending investigation. Bonilla was received from Los Angeles County on May 17, 2012 and is serving a sentence of life with the possibility of parole for first-degree murder with multiple enhancements, corrections officials said. Duran was received from Santa Clara County on Feb. 3, 2022 and was sentenced to two years for a parole violation for vehicle theft with prior vehicle theft convictions. No additional injuries were reported. CDCR said Saturday that officials limited movement in the area where the attack took place to facilitate the investigation. The prison's Investigative Services Unit, the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office and the county's coroner are investigating.

California Medical Facility inmate allegedly attacks correctional officer with improvised weapon

A correctional officer at the California Medical Facility prison in Vacaville was allegedly attacked by an inmate with an improvised weapon, officials say. The incident happened Wednesday just after 10 a.m., according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Prison officials say the correctional office was conducting a cell extraction when inmate Dannuzio Patron allegedly attacked. The officer suffered lacerations to his arm, officials say, while two other staff members who responded to help also reported knee pain. All three were taken to the hospital for treatment. Patron has been transferred to a different prison so he can be placed in restricted housing. He is facing attempted homicide charges, officials say. Prison officials say Patron, 38, had been at California Medical Facility since December 2024 for an eight-year sentence on an assault conviction out of Fresno County. Wednesday's attack was the second alleged inmate attack in as many months at California Medical Facility. Back on April 4, prison officials say three correctional officers were also injured by an inmate wielding an improvised weapon.

2 inmates accused in killing of convicted murderer at Kern Valley State Prison

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — California prison officials said two inmates attacked and killed another inmate Wednesday afternoon at Kern Valley State Prison in Delano. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said late Wednesday, the attack happened at around 1:41 p.m. and left Timothy Whelan, 56, an inmate serving a sentence for second-degree murder, dead. CDCR officials said two inmates — identified as William A. Nesler III, 43, and Edward R. Holden III, 35 — allegedly attacked Whelan with 'improvised weapons.' Prison staff used chemical agents to stop the attack, officials said in a release. Whelan was treated in a triage area at the prison but was pronounced dead about a half hour after the attack. No KVSP staff or other inmates were injured during the incident. Two improvised weapons were found at the scene, according to officials. Kern Valley State Prison officials are investigating the incident with the Kern County District Attorney's Office. The Kern County Coroner's Office will determine an official cause of death for Whelan. Whelan was serving a sentence of life with the possibility of parole. He was sentenced in Los Angeles County in 2005 for an illegal firearms conviction. Nesler is serving a life sentence of life with a possibility of parole for first-degree murder since 2005 out of Tuolumne County. Holden is also serving a life sentence of life with a possibility for parole out of Solano County. Kern Valley State Prison is located in Delano — about 37 miles — north of Bakersfield. The facility houses more than 3,100 inmates, officials said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Prison guard has throat SLASHED by inmate in latest horror attack in high-security jail

A PRISON guard has had their throat slashed by an inmate in the latest incident of growing violence behind bars. The staff member was attacked at HMP Woodhill in Milton Keynes, according to the union representing prison officers. 2 2 A prisoner used an improvised weapon to attack the staff member who needed stitches to their neck and ear as a result. Another violent incident at the same jail involved an inmate who is locked up for terrorism charges. Far-right activist Tommy Robinson is currently being held in HMP Woodhill after being transferred from Belmarsh last year. It is the latest attack involving prisoners in recent weeks which have included a near fatal attack at HMP Frankland by Manchester arena terrorist Hashem Abedi. An investigation is underway into how Southport killer Axel Rudakubana was also able to hurl scolding water over a prison officer inside HMP Belmarsh. Geoff Willetts of the Prison Officers Association said: 'I am advised that one of our members at HMP Woodhill was attacked by a prisoner who was detained under the Terrorism act of 2008. 'The Officer was assaulted and injured while carrying out his duties. ' In a separate incident at the same jail a prisoner was told to return to his cell, this resulted in a specialist officer being slashed with an improvised weapon sustaining injuries to the neck and ear. 'The Officer attended hospital attention where they required stitches and surgical glue applied to their injuries. 'Meanwhile at Gartree Prison, Market Harborough staff attended a medical emergency where a prisoner faked an epileptic fit. "A prison officer who attended to assist was assaulted then had a TV thrown at him and a female officer sustained a broken arm.' The Sun previously revealed that officers working in prisons in England and Wales face attacks almost 30 times a day. A record 10,496 assaults were logged in the year to September 2024 — up from 8,516 the previous 12 months. Steve Gillan POA General Secretary said: 'Escalating levels of violence are out of control in the prison service in England and Wales. "It appears that HMPPS have learned nothing. They continue to ignore the calls from our members on the front line for urgent action to protect Prison Officers from violence. "It is clear Prison regimes must be reviewed as a matter of urgency. We need action to protect Prison Officers before there is a fatality.' 'My thoughts are with the Prison Officers who have been injured, the POA will offer them our full support.'
