Cops probe upside down Jalur Gemilang

A screen grab of the video which features a man hoisting the Malaysian flag upside down. PETALING JAYA : Seberang Perai Utara police have launched an investigation into an incident in which a man had hoisted the Jalur Gemilang upside down. District police chief Anuar Abd Rahman said the authorities were investigating the incident for improper use of emblems and names, insulting behaviour, and improper use of network facilities. 'Police have recorded the statements of the complainant as well as the suspect involved in the incident,' he said in a statement. A video, uploaded at about 12.30pm today, shows a man hoisting the flag, while another was recording it. A report was lodged at the Kepala Batas police station. Anuar reminded the public against sensationalising the matter to avoid disrupting public order. Earlier today, Malaysiakini reported that the hardware shop owner involved in the gaffe said he was measuring the length of an iron pole while hanging the flag and did not notice that the flag was upside down. The owner said he rectified the mistake immediately after realising it. He apologised for the blunder and lodged a report at the Kepala Batas police station to provide an explanation. It was the sixth flag-related incident since January, and the second case of improper handling of flags this month. On Aug 1, SJKC Chung Hua in Port Dickson apologised for mistakenly flying the Jalur Gemilang upside down.

Ampang Jaya police chief Azam Ismail said the 42-year-old man was charged in the Ampang Jaya magistrates' court yesterday under Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955. He pleaded guilty and was released on a bail of RM300 in one surety. The facts of the case showed that the accused had approached the 31-year-old woman at the gym in Taman Melawati at about 2pm and struck up a conversation with her. During the conversation, the suspect told the woman, who is a gym member, not to act arrogant 'or you might get splashed with acid', before walking away. 'Fearing for her safety, the woman lodged a police report,' Azam said in a statement. He said the man, who does not have a criminal record, was arrested at about 3.30pm on Tuesday and was remanded for three days. A urine test showed that he was positive for amphetamine, methamphetamine and tetrahydrocannabinol. The court has fixed July 22 for re-mention for the case.
