Spotted lanternflies are invading the D.C. region. Here's what to know.
Invasive spotted lanternflies have hit the D.C. region again this summer in a big way in backyards, vineyards and parks, annoying homeowners, farmers and nursery managers. Bug experts recommend squashing and killing the pests.
For Shannon Earle, who lives in the Takoma Park area, the invasive insects have been a teachable moment for her outdoor nature education program. This year, she and her students have killed an estimated 200 at the Takoma-Piney Branch Local Park, she said, and the kids used the bugs' polka-dot reddish wings to make art.
