How will new tax rules impact your investment in FoFs?
Post the new tax rules in budget 2024, investors get the benefit of long-term capital gains on FoFs ( fund of funds ) if held for more than 24 months. There is renewed interest among investors in such schemes, with a number of new launches from fund houses. WHAT IS A FUND OF FUND (FoF)? A fund of fund (FoF) is a mutual fund that invests in other mutual funds or exchange-traded funds (ETFs) rather than directly in individual stocks or bonds. Essentially, it's a fund that invests in other funds, providing investors with a diversified portfolio through a single investment Best MF to invest Looking for the best mutual funds to invest? Here are our recommendations. View Details » by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 'Swing is King': Mr. Hemant's Strategy Finally Explained in Free Session TradeWise Learn More Undo WHICH FoF CATEGORIES ARE POPULAR IN INDIA? The most popular categories of FoFs are the precious metals category and the international funds category. In the gold or silver FoFs, the scheme invests in the gold or silver ETFs of the same fund house. International FoFs invest in funds domiciled outside India, which gives investors exposure to companies listed in other geographies. Recently, the income-plus-arbitrage FoF is also attracting interest, where the scheme invests in a mix of fixed income and arbitrage strategy schemes. In addition, there are equity FoF schemes or thematic FoFs that invest in the best schemes across fund houses or themes chosen from the same fund house. FoFs are now used as a useful tool for diversifying investments across different asset classes WHY ARE FoF SCHEMES POPULAR IN INDIA? WHAT IS THE TAX INVESTORS HAVE TO PAY? Many FoFs are getting popular because, as per the new tax rules, an equity-oriented FoF now enjoys long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax of 12.5% if held for more than 24 months. Earlier, gains were taxed in line with the investor's tax slab. If a FoF invests primarily in equity, it's treated as an equity-oriented fund for taxation; otherwise, it's treated as a non-equity fund. Equity-oriented FoFs and those invested in gold ETFs are subject to long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax of 12.5% (plus applicable cess and surcharge) if held for more than 24 months, and short-term capital gains (STCG) are taxed at the investor's slab rate if held for less than 24 months. Non-equity FoFs are taxed at the investor's slab rate for both LTCG and STCG. Live Events WHAT IS THE DISADVANTAGE OF A FoF? One disadvantage of a FoF scheme is that investors have to pay an expense ratio twice—one for the underlying scheme and another for the wrapper. Investors must keep this in mind while investing in an FoF, especially in categories like precious metals or debt, where returns are low.

Inside UK's plan for World War 3: Billions for nukes, drones and long-range weapons
The United Kingdom has issued a stark warning about the growing risk of a global conflict, unveiling an ambitious new National Security Strategy (NSS) that calls for sweeping wartime preparedness and historic defence investment. The government says it is preparing for a future that may involve direct attacks on UK soil, drawing comparisons to the mobilisation efforts of World War II. "For the first time in many years, we have to actively prepare for the possibility of the UK homeland coming under direct threat, potentially in a wartime scenario," the NSS states. The strategy warns of escalating global tensions, citing flashpoints such as the Indo-Pacific, rising hostility between India and Pakistan, and recent military conflict between Israel and Iran. 'Significant escalation in any of these theatres,' the document notes, 'would have a profoundly negative impact on our energy security, the cost of living and our ability to grow our economy.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 'Swing is King': Top Trader Hemant's Strategy Finally Explained in this Free Session ! TradeWise Learn More Undo It also points to growing coordination between hostile states like Russia and China, terrorist groups, and transnational criminals. In this increasingly unstable environment, the risks posed by nuclear weapons are described as 'more complex than they were even during the Cold War.' In response, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has committed to raising defence spending to 5% of GDP within the next decade — a scale of investment 'not seen since 1945.' Cabinet Office Minister Pat McFadden emphasized the need to bolster domestic defences and secure the nation's borders. Live Events Key pillars of the strategy include: Construction of six new munitions factories and procurement of up to 7,000 UK-built long-range weapons. £15 billion investment in a sovereign nuclear warhead programme, and £31 billion for the Dreadnought-class nuclear submarine fleet. Creation of UK Defence Innovation, a new agency to accelerate adoption of cutting-edge military technology. £4 billion investment in autonomous systems such as drones , AI-powered targeting, and battlefield communication platforms. The UK is also deepening military cooperation with global allies. Under the AUKUS pact and the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) with Australia, Japan, and Italy, the UK will co-develop nuclear-powered submarines and sixth-generation fighter jets. These initiatives are expected to generate tens of thousands of high-skilled jobs, including 30,000 in the submarine sector alone. Another major shift lies in the push for economic self-reliance and reduced dependence on adversarial powers. The government plans to rebuild the defence industrial base, promote innovation by easing regulation, and directly intervene in strategic industries like steel and shipbuilding. To ensure these benefits are felt nationwide, 68% of Ministry of Defence spending will take place outside London and the South East, supporting regional economies and strengthening national resilience. With mounting geopolitical threats and a rapidly evolving battlefield shaped by drones, cyber warfare, and AI, the UK's latest strategy marks a turning point — one that redefines defence not just as protection, but as a pillar of national prosperity and global relevance.

At 1.5 lakh, pedestrians made up 20% of road deaths in 5 years
Nearly 1.5 lakh pedestrians died in India from 2019-2023, highlighting their vulnerability despite having right-of-way. A Supreme Court panel audit revealed that footpath availability varies widely across states, often not meeting standards. The court emphasized pedestrians' rights under Article 21, advocating for accessible, encroachment-free footpaths as a crucial, low-cost safety measure. NEW DELHI: Despite having the first right on roads, pedestrians remain the most vulnerable user and data show that nearly 1.5 lakh of them died in road crashes in the country in from 2019-2023 out of the little over 7.9 lakh of all road fatalities during these years. While Supreme Court this week said that 'rights of pedestrians to use footpaths are guaranteed under Article 21 of Constitution', audits carried out in 24 states following a direction of an SC panel found that roads having footpaths across most states and UTs range between 19% and 73%, with Maharashtra having the maximum. Just 3% of J&K roads have pavements Details of the audit findings were released recently by the Transportation Research and Injury Prevention Centre of Injury and IIT-Delhi in its report 'India Status Report on Road Safety'. The availability of footpaths and whether these comply with the norms of width and height specified by the Indian Road Congress (IRC) were arrived at based on surveys across four cities in each state. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 'Swing is King': Mr. Hemant's Strategy Finally Explained in Free Session TradeWise Learn More Undo As per the findings, in Jammu & Kashmir, barely 3% of the roads surveyed had footpath, and in the case of Puducherry, it was only 5%. In Bihar and Haryana, 19%-20% of roads had footpath. In most cases, footpath were not as per IRC norms. The apex court, in its order this week, observed, 'It is necessary to have proper footpaths for citizens. They should be such that they should be accessible for persons with disabilities and removal of encroachments is mandatory. This court has recognised that the right of pedestrians to use footpaths is guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution.' Amar Srivastava, who heads India Road Safety Campaign, a youth-led road safety movement, said that building proper footpaths and keeping them free for pedestrians is the most low cost intervention to prevent road crashes. 'So, this should be the priority of every city administration and local govts,' he added. According to World Health Organisation, globally pedestrians make up 21% of road fatalities and in India, nearly one-fifth of people killed in road crashes in 2023 were walkers. WHO, last week, released a toolkit for promoting 'walking and cycling' for govt bodies as part of the ongoing UN Road Safety Week with the theme 'make walking and cycling safe', laying out why promoting walking and cycling should be the priority of govts for sustainable development and good health of people.
