Will Albuquerque's ‘Rail Trail' Be A Thing?

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – For years, New Mexicans have heard promises of 'revitalization' and 'redevelopment' in downtown Albuquerque—but is it actually happening? This week on the New Mexico News Insiders Podcast, Chris and Gabby sit down with Terry Brunner, Director of the Metropolitan Redevelopment Agency, to pull back the curtain on how government is working with the private sector to incentivize development. Brunner details housing plans, local business buy-in for increased security, and some long-game, multimillion-dollar projects like the 'Rail Trail.' What is it exactly? And when could people see the Rail Trail in real life? Right now, it's hard to walk from Old Town to the Bosque trail; it's not an easy path,' Brunner explains. 'So it's just logical. You want to build a nicer connector that takes you from Old Town to the Bio Park to the Bosque Trail. Like, that's common sense.' Two 'simple' goals for downtown include adding more shade and improving parking. Brunner also shares what he's learned from visiting other major cities, and draws on the overall mission to attract more people to downtown. 'Getting bodies downtown is really the key to everything,' Brunner explained. 'That changes the dynamic so much. But when you're the only person Thursday at 3 p.m., it feels lonely and weird and not that great.' Listen to the full discussion above to hear what is being prioritized over the next few years and how much it'll cost. Incompetent to Stand Trial? Arrest, Release, Repeat

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – When someone is deemed 'incompetent' to stand trial, how does New Mexico's criminal justice system respond? It's the subject of a recent Larry Barker investigation that looked at cases involving hundreds of arrests, only for the offenders to be released back onto the streets. People who are mentally ill are committing crimes across the state, getting arrested, and their cases are dismissed without any repercussions or assistance. This week on the New Mexico News Insiders Podcast, Barker, along with University of New Mexico Criminal Law Professor Joshua Kastenberg, join Chris and Gabby to discuss the complexities of cases like this, and why the justice system isn't set up to help the incompetent suspects or their victims. Why isn't there a better alternative for people deemed incompetent to stand trial? How will new legislation impact cases like this? Those questions and more are discussed in the full interview above. What Will Voters Do With $1.5 Million?

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – If you had $1.5 million to build something for your community, what would you spend it on? Voters in Albuquerque will decide just that with the 'set aside' fund from Council District 6, thanks to the idea of 'Participatory Budgeting.' What does that mean exactly? City Councilor Nichole Rogers is spearheading the movement in her district for the first time. She joins Chris and Gabby this week to explain why she's doing it, how people are getting involved with plans, and the projects currently on the table. Could this set a trend? Listen to the full interview above to learn why Councilor Rogers is already excited to do the same thing again next year. Anyone 11 years old and older can vote, as long as you live, work, or study in Albuququerque's District 6. Voting is open through April 19th and can be done through this link. 'I felt strongly that if these middle-schoolers can put in this project for the Five Blocks for Life, they should be able to vote on these projects as well,' said Councilor Rogers. More about that project and others on the table can be found here. Stay informed with the latest news by subscribing to the New Mexico News Insiders Podcast wherever you listen. ‘High Levels' Of Microplastics Found In Human Brains

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Researchers from the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center found 'alarmingly high levels' of microplastics in human brains. The amount appears to be a higher concentration of plastic than found in other organs, and scientists say the accumulation is growing over time. How did plastic get there in the first place? And what, if anything, should people do about this issue? This week on the New Mexico News Insiders Podcast, Dr. Marcus Garcia joins Chris and Gabby to explain the study's methods, what researchers learned, and the questions they're still working to answer. He also shares what scientists believe to be the catalyst for plastic entering our food chain. 'You're not gonna get as much of your microplastics exposure from that cup or that piece of plastic that's covering your food products when you first purchase them,' said Dr. Garcia. 'It's what happens to that after it ends up in a landfill, so after we throw those away, then they're continuing to degrade in these types of environments for the next 20-30 years.'Dr. Garcia explained the lengthy breakdown of plastic into the ground, and eventually into the water stream, starts with how plastic is disposed of. 'The mechanical degradation, that's what causes these plastics to break down into these much finer micro or nano plastics. Then those end up leaching out into our ground waters, into our soils.' Those topics and more are discussed in the full episode above. Stay informed with the latest news by subscribing to the New Mexico News Insiders Podcast wherever you listen.
