‘High Levels' Of Microplastics Found In Human Brains
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Researchers from the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center found 'alarmingly high levels' of microplastics in human brains. The amount appears to be a higher concentration of plastic than found in other organs, and scientists say the accumulation is growing over time.
How did plastic get there in the first place? And what, if anything, should people do about this issue?
This week on the New Mexico News Insiders Podcast, Dr. Marcus Garcia joins Chris and Gabby to explain the study's methods, what researchers learned, and the questions they're still working to answer. He also shares what scientists believe to be the catalyst for plastic entering our food chain.
'You're not gonna get as much of your microplastics exposure from that cup or that piece of plastic that's covering your food products when you first purchase them,' said Dr. Garcia. 'It's what happens to that after it ends up in a landfill, so after we throw those away, then they're continuing to degrade in these types of environments for the next 20-30 years.'Dr. Garcia explained the lengthy breakdown of plastic into the ground, and eventually into the water stream, starts with how plastic is disposed of. 'The mechanical degradation, that's what causes these plastics to break down into these much finer micro or nano plastics. Then those end up leaching out into our ground waters, into our soils.'

Deion Sanders Breaks Silence Amid Undisclosed Health Issue
Deion Sanders is touched by the outpouring support amid his undisclosed health issue, but the University of Colorado football coach says fans need not worry. Coach Prime took to social media on Wednesday to calm the waters amid speculation there's growing concern about his health. Sanders has been away from the program while reportedly dealing with an illness in Texas. Advertisement That the illness hasn't been disclosed is only adding fuel to the fire. But Sanders is now addressing the issue head-on, sort of. "Wow, I am truly blessed for the abundance of well wishes, for all the thoughts and all of the prayers. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! I can assure you all that everything is OKAY and will continue to be so," he tweeted. "God got me like no other. I have so much more work to do to Glorify God so please believe God got me! I'm excited to get back to Colorado to be at home with my staff, team & all associated to our program. When we arrive back to Boulder you will be updated on everything. Until then, I'M COMING BABY." ESPN had previously reported that the 57-year-old coach's return would not be known and no timetable has been set. Positive measles sample found in Roswell wastewater testing
ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE) — The New Mexico Department of Health confirmed on Tuesday that a positive measles sample was found through wastewater testing in Roswell. The sample was taken on June 3 as part of a wastewater testing initiative that has been conducted in 11 treatment facilities around New Mexico since March. However, the department says it serves as a reminder for Chaves County residents to check on their MMR vaccination. There are currently 81 measles cases reported in New Mexico. The last laboratory-confirmed case in Chaves County was on April 5. 'While wastewater testing cannot tell us the timing, location or number of people infected with measles, this detection tells us there was at least one person infectious with measles in Roswell around June 3 and puts us on notice there may be more cases in Chaves County in the coming days,' said Dr. Daniel Sosin, NMDOH medical epidemiologist. NMDOH carries out weekly wastewater measles testing in Albuquerque/Bernalillo County, Carlsbad, Chaparral, Deming, Las Cruces, Portales, Rincon, Rio Rancho, Roswell, Santa Fe and the South Central treatment plant in Doña Ana County. Symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose and red eyes, followed by a red spotted rash that usually starts on the head or face and spreads down the body.
