Federal NDP will pick Singh's replacement in March 2026, after months-long race

OTTAWA — The federal New Democrats will select their new leader in March 2026 following a six-month leadership race this fall, where contenders will have to submit a $100,00 entry fee, according to a source familiar with the decision. The details come as the party's federal executive and council met to discuss the upcoming race, which will begin in September. The NDP's top job opened up when former party leader Jagmeet Singh stepped down after losing his seat in the April 28 federal election, which delivered the party its worst electoral defeat yet. The federal New Democrats were reduced to seven seats in the House of Commons, down from their previous 24. Rebuilding the party is set to be the first order of business for the new leader, which will be no easy task considering the federal NDP is strapped for cash after the election, with hundreds of candidates failing to crack 10 per cent or more of the votes needed to qualify for campaign reimbursements from Elections Canada. That likely means it will lose out on millions of dollars, in addition to the millions of dollars in government staff and research funds the party stopped receiving after it failed to win enough seats for official party status. The upcoming race will be a critical way for the party to raise money, reconnect with party members, as well as draw in new supporters. Recently, the NDP announced that human rights and labour lawyer Emilie Taman, who has previously run as a candidate for the party, will steer its 2025 election review. It has committed to sharing the results of the review with party members before the end of the year. Interim NDP Leader Don Davies will lead the party's six-member caucus until a new leader is chosen. Edmonton NDP MP Heather McPherson, who is believed to be considering a leadership run, recently posted a video to Facebook, saying she wanted to hear about how the party needs to change. 'The last election was a wake-up call,' she said in the short video shared on July 7. 'The NDP played it safe. We were neutral in a moment that demanded leadership. We stayed on the sidelines while people were asking us for solutions. And as a result, we lost trust.' Former longtime NDP MP Charlie Angus, who did not seek re-election this year but has hosted news conferences on Parliament Hill since the election, has said he does not plan to run for leadership, but called the last election 'an unmitigated disaster' for the party. Angus criticized how people felt the party was too 'leader-focused' and ended up losing touch, and also underscored the need to rebuild the party. Quebec Liberals to elect new leader today ahead of 2026 election

The Quebec Liberals' leadership race is coming to an end Saturday in Quebec City, where members are poised to elect their next leader. Whoever they chose will replace interim leader Marc Tanguay, who took over from Dominique Anglade after she stepped down in 2022, and represent the party at the next provincial election coming up in October 2026. All members registered with the party as of May 9 are eligible to cast a vote via preferential ballot. Votes are weighed by riding and age, meaning there's pressure for candidates to appeal to Quebec's different regions and young people. It can take up to two rounds of voting to decide a winner. Former federal minister Pablo Rodriguez is largely considered the front-runner in the race. He was first elected to the House of Commons in 2004, representing the Honoré-Mercier riding in Montreal. As part of former prime minister Justin Trudeau's government, he held various ministerial roles in cabinet, including most recently minister of transport. Rodriguez left cabinet and began sitting in the House as an Independent MP in September 2024 after announcing his pivot to provincial politics and his intention to run for the Quebec Liberal leadership. Running against Rodriguez is Karl Blackburn, who represented Roberval at the National Assembly from 2003 until 2007 under Jean Charest's Liberals. He's also the former president of a Quebec employers' group, the Conseil du patronat du Québec. Charles Milliard, another candidate, is a pharmacist by training and the former head of the Quebec Federation of Chambers of Commerce. Other candidates seeking the party's leadership are international trade lawyer Marc Bélanger and Mario Roy, an economist and farmer. The Liberals currently hold 19 out of 125 seats at the National Assembly.

Marc Bélanger says he would focus on boosting economy as leader of Quebec Liberal Party

The race to lead the Quebec Liberal Party is entering its final stretch, with less than a month to go before members cast their votes. Five candidates are vying for the leadership, and over the past few months, we've spoken with four of them. The fifth and final contender is Marc Bélanger. An international trade lawyer by profession, Bélanger says his focus as leader would be on boosting economic growth, supporting local businesses and increasing Quebec's economic self-sufficiency.
