I struggled with chronic chapped lips for years, and I've finally found a £4.50 budget buy that's healed them

If you make a purchase via links on this page we will earn commission - learn more Since I was a teen, I've struggled with chronically dry lips. It's partly due to spending loads of time outside doing sport; partly down to medication I take which causes dry skin as a side-effect; and partly down to an annoying (and unattractive) nervous tic I have for peeling flaky bits off. Unfortunately, it's not an easy problem to solve. Most lip balms I apply smudge off as soon as I eat (realistically about 12 times a day) or are immediately dissolved by my uber-dry lips without making any real difference. Even worse? Products that are meant to look nice like 'hydrating lipsticks' never work and worse, usually cling to dry skin which means I not only have chapped lips, but lumpy, discoloured ones. When I finally complained to my beauty editor friend about this, she rolled her eyes at my ineptitude and directed me to a £4.50 Boots buy she claimed would instantly resolve the issue. 'Put a healthy layer on at night, then put some of your face moisturiser over it,' she said. 'Honestly, they'll be baby soft.' I was dubious that Boots' Berry Lip Sleep Mask would do much good, given I'd tried multiple lip baths and masks and balms costing £30-plus to no avail. But that night I duly applied a layer, topped with some moisturiser and went to sleep, and when I woke up, my lips were still moist. After trying the same routine for a few months, I can truly say it's made a world of difference. I still apply some balm in the day, usually with some of my favourite Charlotte Tilbury lipstick over the top. But the general chapped-ness has eased significantly and when I wake up, my pout is well hydrated and doesn't even need more balm for the first few hours of the day. I top mine with a smidge of CeraVe Moisturising Cream, but according to beauty buffs, any skin balm should work as well by sealing in the lip mask. Give it a try and prepare for a perfect pout – you can thank me later.

We've tried dozens of lip balms – these are 10 of the best

Let's be frank, up until a couple of years ago lip balm wasn't anything to get excited about – no more precious than a bar of supermarket soap. Now, the global lip care product market is valued at £1.84 billion – and is predicted to grow by 5.9 per cent in the next five years. Hence lip balms in various nuances can now volumise, firm, gloss, tint and protect your lips from sun damage in one dinky tube. We've tested dozens and dozens of new and existing balms – some tinted, some not, in a range of budgets. These are our top 10 buys. Best for everyday hydration Lip Balm, £10, Dr Barbara Sturm For a brand that sells skincare at prices the average person can't/won't stretch to, this teeny back-pocket lip balm (a little goes a long way) from anti-inflammatory skin doctor Barbara Sturm, is great value. Including lip conditioning heroes lanolin, beeswax, Shea butter, avocado, coconut and sunflower seed oils along with vitamin E, it's an antioxidant protectant and hydrator in one. Not too slippy, it makes an ideal primer for under lipstick. Best for overnight repair Naturium Phyto-Glow Lip Mask, £15, SpaceNK It goes on thick but before long this intensive lip mask seeps into dry, lined lips seamlessly, leaving you with lip skin that feels like it's been in therapy for decades. Apply it before bed for an all nighter or before makeup while you do your skincare. Great for those times when you just need more. Best holiday pick-me-up Glossier Balm Dotcom Lip Balm in Banana Pudding, £16, SpaceNK Nothing extraordinary about Glossier's new sheer Banana Pudding Balm – other than the scent is a welcome reminder to not take life too seriously. Packed with antioxidants that combat free radicals, the perfect ratio of oils and waxes mingle together for a semi-sheen finish that doesn't slip and slide outside of the lip line. We're taking this one on holiday. Best for plumping and firming Bounce Balm, £17, Vieve A soft cushiony balm with tripeptides to plump and firm delicate lip skin by a whopping 45 per cent, it also contains bakuchiol (nature's retinol) to soften lip lines. We particularly like the soft sheen finish that stays put to lock in hydration. Best tinted treatment Belif Super Knights Berry Tinted Lipcerin £17, Boots Made in Korea where women take their skin more seriously than most, this twist top pot is air tight to protect the active ingredients and prevent double dipping. One to leave on your desk or bedside table for whenever you need a hit of hydration, this glycerin packed balm was developed over five years using learning analysis of 57,000 lip images. The formula harnesses vitamins C, E, B3 and B12 along with peptides and ceramides to boost collagen and replenish lipids, while soothing botanicals strengthen the barrier. Oh and it imparts lips with a bonus pink sheen and berry scent. Best cool-girl essential Peptide Lip Treatment, £18, Rhode Including peptides, shea butter and vitamin E, this super cool balm is as suitable for Gen-Xers as it is for Alphas thanks to its skin repairing amino acids, nourishing emollients and protective antioxidants. Aside from being good for lips, you'll score street cred with your teen when you pull it from your bag. Best for sun protection Lip De-Luscious SPF20, £20, Mecca Cosmetica Vitamin E, hyaluronic filling spheres and a soft pink tint that's ever so slightly opalescent, this shea butter, vitamin E and pomegranate seed oil balm lasts and lasts. The first thing to put on after you've brushed your teeth, the SPF20 coverage is a safety nod from the Aussie founders who make sun protection a top priority. Expect visible plumping and clinically proven hydration. Best summer gloss Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm in Pink Guava, £23, Cult Beauty Glossier than some of the balms we've tried but without feeling sticky, this tinted lip balm is full of seed butters and botanicals that properly take care of dry lip skin while dousing lips in a pretty pink veil. And it's not just us who thinks so – thousands of five star reviews agree it is a no-brainer purchase for the summer. Best for high SPF and barrier care LipidRestore Volumize + Condition Lips SPF40, £25, Sunsolve Technically more of an oil than a balm, this clever lip conditioner by Sunsolve gets a big thumbs up from us. Great for holidays or the city, this high factor lip balm in a universal nude shade has something called 'Lipiderma Technology' that locks in hydration, while the mineral sun protection complex contains micronised zinc oxide particles and reparative actives that shield from UV and boost the lip's skin barrier. Best luxe treatment balm Balm Amour, £27, Violette FR French makeup artist Violette Serrat has yet to produce a product we didn't agree with, and her first balm is no exception. Six years in the making, Balm Amour is a high end treatment and everyday balm in one. A clear under-or-over makeup essential, a phyto-collagen activator increases lip volume by 13 per cent without that uncomfortable tingling sensation, while a potent tripeptide increases collagen and hyaluronic acid naturally within the skin. All this is combined with oils to nourish sooth and protect the lips from environmental aggressors. Moreover, the glass finish is super sexy.

I'm over 40 and swear by this lip contour balm to minimize upper lip lines

My skin care regimen is fairly extensive because I use a variety of different serums, balms and creams to target various skin woes. While I've seen noticeable differences in everything from dark spots and skin texture to fine lines, nothing ever seemed to help the perioral lines on my top lip, also known as 'smoker lines.' That is, until I discovered Clarins Extra-Firming Lip and Contour Balm. I dabbled with smoking in my early 20s, but I would never call myself a former smoker. So, you can imagine my surprise when I started to develop these 'smoker lines' in my mid-30s. Unfortunately, these fine lines have been very stubborn to treat, and there aren't a lot of affordable options out there that target this area — unlike eye creams, for example, which are a dime a dozen. And believe me, I've tried so many beauty products that claim to treat this area. But I couldn't find an affordable option until a Reddit search introduced me to this Clarins lip balm. Clarins Extra-Firming Lip and Contour Balm This lip contour balm isn't sticky, absorbs easily and will make your lips soft and supple. But what I really loved about it is its ability to diminish the appearance of my perioral lines after a few weeks of regular use. It's made with shea butter to protect lips and raspberry oil, which is rich in antioxidants and vitamin E. Although it's not cheap at $49 for a jar, it lasts for a long time, even with slathering this on several times a day. I smooth it a little above the lip as well as over my mouth so it really reaches the lip contours and smooths them out. On top of that, my lips feel so moisturized — and dare I say, look a little fuller? The balm doesn't feel sticky and absorbs into my lips while still giving them some shine. It took about three weeks of regular use before I saw a reduction in my lip lines, but they felt and looked softer after only a few days. When I asked Dr. Brian Hibler of Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York why it's so hard to treat these fine lines, he said that it all comes down to collagen and elastin loss from UV damage and aging, along with muscle crunching. Dehydration can be another factor as well. 'The intensity of the lines are partially related to the number of times and how hard the muscle around the mouth is flexed,' he added. 'Over time, this repetitive movement causes these lines to become etched in, even at rest.' To mitigate the lines in this area, he said to use a daily sunscreen, topical retinoids at night and a hydrating moisturizer. Since this Clarins balm is made with shea butter to protect lips and raspberry oil, which is rich in antioxidants and vitamin E, it is very effective at hydrating that area. Hibler also said that Botox can help relax these muscles if treated early enough, but I draw the line at getting Botox anywhere other than my forehead. And besides, it sounds like I am already too late for this anyway. You really need to stick with this balm. As I mentioned, I noticed the effects after applying it several times a day for a few weeks, and even then, it reduced the appearance of my lip lines but did not erase them completely. Unfortunately, it will take something more expensive or invasive to truly eliminate these lines. I also saw some reviews complaining about the application process and how the balm can get stuck under your nails. I don't have long fingernails, so I don't have that problem, but I understand how that would be frustrating for someone who does. It's definitely not the most user-friendly packaging, but it certainly isn't a deal breaker by any means. This may not work for everyone, but it was effective for me in improving my lip contour lines. I saw many online reviews echoing my thoughts, provided you treat them early enough. Yes, $49 is a lot to pay for lip balm, but as previously mentioned, this will last a long time. Plus, there are not a lot of treatment options to target these perioral lines. 'Microneedling and non-ablative laser treatments like Fraxel can be helpful to stimulate collagen induction and smooth the skin in this area,' Hibler said, but professional treatments like those are incredibly pricey. So, while I won't get the same results as a laser treatment (nor do I expect to) by using an over-the-counter product, anything that improves my lines even a little bit is a win win for me. And for under $50, Clarins Extra-Firming Lip and Contour Balm is the answer to my prayers (for now). The following FAQs were answered by board-certified cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Brian Hibler and includes reporting by managing editor Rachel Quigley. How do you use Clarins Extra-Firming Lip and Contour Balm? How do you use Clarins Extra-Firming Lip and Contour Balm? Apply it on your lips and above your upper lip several times a day with your finger. What causes upper lip lines? What causes upper lip lines? According to Hibler, 'Upper lip lines are caused by a variety of genetic, environmental and behavioral factors. Sometimes referred to as 'smoker's lines', these lines around the mouth are often seen in nonsmokers.' He also said that daily activities like drinking through a straw or making certain facial expressions can contribute to the development of these lines. 'Over time, this repetitive muscle movement causes the lines to etch into the skin, similar to those between the eyebrows ('eleven lines' or glabellar lines) and around the eyes (crow's feet).' UV damage, natural loss of collagen and elastin over time, and not drinking enough water can also make the lines worse. EXCLUSIVE: Revlon Teams With Guy Fieri to Drop a Wing-inspired Lip Balm Named ‘Flavortown'

Revlon is getting its hands dirty with a saucy new lip balm. Honoring National Chicken Wing Day and National Lipstick Day, which both fall on Tuesday this year, the drugstore cosmetics brand tapped restaurateur Guy Fieri to drop the latest addition to its viral Super Lustrous Glass Shine Balm named after the 'Mayor of Flavortown' himself, priced at $10.49. 'That coincidence felt too bold, too flavorful and too fun to ignore,' said Kelly Solomon, Revlon's chief digital marketing officer, via statement. 'We saw a chance to create a cultural moment that blended beauty and food — two worlds built on creativity, indulgence and self-expression. The concept of a wing-inspired lipstick felt playfully disruptive in all the right ways. From there, 'Flavortown' was born.' More from WWD Charli XCX Brings Bratcore Style to Converse With New Custom Chuck Taylor Launch Noah Cyrus Channels Amy Winehouse While Joining the Beehive Trend Revival Tecovas' Cowboy Boots Go Chili's Red Hot in New Collaboration Fieri's Flavortown is a harbinger of the next era for the Super Lustrous Glass Shine, which was rereleased in December 2024 due to rising consumer demand. It's also the first limited-edition, custom product drop featuring the Glass Shine product. The coral-colored lip shade was created with Guy's O.G. Buffalo Sauce in mind, but the flavor profile is nowhere near as spicy, it's actually flavorless. With a glass-like finish, the formula is buildable — meaning the red pigment is subtle — and nonsticky with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, aloe and rose quartz. The name 'Flavortown' was inspired by Fieri's signature catchphrase on his show 'Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,' which first aired on Food Network in 2007. The food connoisseur later opened up a delivery-only barbecue spot in Newark Liberty International Airport named Flavortown Kitchen, and now he's set to host another Food Network series called 'Guy's Flavortown Games.' 'This is a deliciously daring celebration of individuality, joy and flavor. The Flavortown Glass Shine Balm is for anyone who doesn't take themselves too seriously — and still wants to look amazing,' Solomon said. 'Unlike more traditional fashion or entertainment-driven collabs, this one taps into food culture and brings a totally different kind of icon to the table. It's fun, irreverent and designed to make people smile, while still delivering a genuinely wearable, high-performance product.' The coincidence of National Chicken Wing Day and National Lipstick Day being calendared together prompted Solomon to mull over the question, 'Who is the undisputed face of flavor?' The obvious answer: Fieri. From that point on, Fieri was committed to helping Solomon and the rest of the Revlon team cook up something special. 'Of course, National Chicken Wing Day is a major holiday in Flavortown so it was already on my radar,' Fieri told WWD in an email statement. 'But when Revlon hit me up to team up on a fiery collab combining it with National Lipstick Day, I was all in. This is the next level collab you've been waiting for.' As part of this collaboration, out-of-home advertising activations will be hosted in New York City on Tuesday in Times Square and near Fieri's restaurant, Chicken Guy, in Bryant Park. The product, and a specialized sticker pack, will be available exclusively online at through Tuesday. Fieri's Flavortown balm comes more than a year after the namesake cosmetics brand appointed Michelle Peluso as its new chief executive officer in October 2024, two years after the brand filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Earlier this year, Peluso sat down with WWD to discuss her plans for the storied brand moving forward under new ownership and out of bankruptcy. 'The bottom line is this is a brand that's always stood for glamour,' Peluso said. 'We're not the no-makeup-look brand. We've been taking our partners through a three-year road map of innovation and storytelling to strengthen that ownership of glamour for mass.'
