Is your lipstick making you look older? ROSIE GREEN reveals 7 of the best anti-ageing buys - from a £6 creamy formula to a plumper that rivals lip filler
We all know the trouble of finding a good lipstick. Some smudge the second you eat something; others are barely visible 15 minutes after application; and some go all dry and flaky, giving you the dreaded crispy bacon lips. According to YOU's beauty editor Rosie Green, the task only gets trickier as you get older. 'It's one of the cruelties of ageing that as our bottoms generally get plumper, our lips only get skinnier,' she says. 'And, to add insult to injury, their moisture levels decrease, as does their natural pinkness.' This means the need for a hardworking, hydrating lip product that delivers intense colour is more important than ever. Luckily, after three decades in the industry, Green is well placed to pick the lip products that pack a punch when it comes to infusing moisture and delivering a luscious shade. Here are seven of her favourites: from a budget £6.49 lippie perfect for dry, mature lips to a plumping gloss that gives amplified assets without the need for needles. Kiko's Smart Fusion Lipstick Green says this purse-friendly lipstick is one of the best beauty buys you can pick up for under a tenner. 'It has a creamy texture that's ideal for dry lips, and it comes in 37 flattering shades, so there's sure to be one to suit your skin tone. 'There's a reason it's a staple in many make-up artist's kits.' £6.49 Shop Plump It! Volumising Lip Plumper Lots of people worry about their lips thinning as they age, but Green has a secret weapon for securing a plump pout without reaching for filler. 'A favourite of make-up artists for temporarily (and subtly) inflating pouts, Plump It!'s Volumising Plumper is a serum that works by increasing blood circulation to the lips to boost their fullness.' 'It stings,' Green admits, 'but it really works.' £22.99 Shop Clarins Lip Oil 'I love an oil/balm/gloss hybrid,' Green says, 'and Clarins' Lip Oil is ultra nourishing with a high shine that flatters mature mouths.' 'One of my favourites shades is No 10, Plum, which is great for nailing on-trend berry lips in a softer way. It just gives a hint of berry colour without being too intense – I love it!' £22.95 Shop Lisa Eldridge Velveteen Liquid Lip Colour 'Matte lip colour looks chic and has great staying power,' Green says. 'But it can also make your mouth look smaller, which isn't flattering as you get older.' 'If you prefer a matte look, opt for formulations with a sumptuous suede texture which are less cloying and drying. One of my top picks for powering up your pout is Lisa Eldridge's Velveteen, which is silky smooth and a softer take on matte.' £21 Shop Rhode Peptide Lip Treatment Looking for a gloss that looks uber natural? Rhode's Peptide Lip Treatment in strawberry glaze gives your pout a natural, youthful pinkness while also delivering a moisture hit to your skin. 'Rhode's formula is full of rejuvinating actives,' Green explains, 'which give long-lasting hydration and boos plumpness. It's created by model Hailey Bieber (who's just sold her company for a whopping $1billion), and is a huge internet hit.' £16 Shop Merit Signature Lip Matte Lightweight Lipstick Merit's Signature Lightweight Lipstick is one of Green's go-to products. When helping author Kate Mosse with a new look, she used Merit's 'beautifully pigmented lipstick' in a rich red shade, Vermillion. 'It doesn't dry the lips but it also has a matte texture, so it stays in place. I think Kate liked that it felt soft and light on her mouth.' £23 Shop

Since switching to this lipstick, I've never received more compliments
It started with comments on a video I posted on social media about something completely unrelated. Then a mum asked me about it at the school gates. A few days later, a colleague posed the same question, with the same quizzical tilt of the head: 'What is that lipstick you're wearing?' Good question. It's a lipstick I've become so taken with that I've worn it repeatedly over the past month, in the run-up to its official launch last week. Yes, you might not need an eyeshadow palette with 10 different shades of beige, but who doesn't need a new lipstick? It's called Poutder by Vieve, and is worth every penny of the £23 price tag. (I know that's by no means cheap, but I've worn it so much that the cost-per-wear is very low.) If you're not familiar with Vieve, it's founded by a young make-up artist-turned-beauty influencer, Jamie Genevieve, who launched the range in 2020. On first appearance, you might think that the brand is geared towards Gen Z and Gen Alpha – it's very cool and is huge on social media – but the products are thoughtfully designed, innovative to use and, crucially, look fantastic on women of all ages. Vieve's best product yet is the Poutder, in my opinion. As the name suggests, it is a 'soft matte' mousse with finely milled powder particles within, which sounds like a complete disaster but in fact means that any lines are smoothed away and the colour settles in a really soft, diffused fashion. Poutder by Vieve, £23, Space NK It's available in four shades – a fair peach, a light pink, a figgy brown and the one that I've been wearing non-stop, a rich raspberry shade called Ripple. The colour is part of its magic: it's deep enough to suit all skin tones but still supremely wearable and flattering whether you're very pale or have a darker skin tone. It doesn't look high-maintenance, either, which so many of the trendy glosses nowadays do. There's a reason why matte lipsticks have had enduring appeal for decades, and that's because if you're over the age of 35, a soft matte formula will look infinitely more elegant than a very shiny, glossy or glazed lip. Another product I love in the 'throw on with anything' lipstick category is Bisou Balm by French make-up artist-founded brand Violette FR. These lipsticks come in a traditional bullet, if that's more your thing, and have a lighter deposit of colour (although you can apply a couple of coats for a more intense colour). The latest shade, Mon Cheri, is a just-bitten cherry brown that looks, as you'd expect, très chic. Bisou Balm, £30, Violette FR Neither claims to be long-wearing but, having worn both lipsticks on a recent holiday, I can vouch for them being excellent options in the heat. I don't know about you, but the last thing I want in hot weather is a slick of slippery lip gloss, so if I'm wearing a lip colour at all, it will be one of these grown-up matte lipsticks. Pleasingly, there are lots of these elegant, mousse-y matte formulas around, in blush form as well as lipstick. I've been wearing the new Soft Pinch Matte Bouncy Blush by Rare Beauty, which is probably the best piece that I've tried from the make-up brand founded by Selena Gomez. The colours are flattering and smoothing on the skin (the shade Alive is just glorious) and the formula strikes a balance between looking radiant yet not remotely greasy. Soft Pinch Matte Bouncy Blush by Rare Beauty, £26, Space NK When time is of the essence, I've been using the Poutder on my cheeks too, as recommended by Jamie. There's nothing handier for your bag than a multi-purpose product. If you head to you can see a full demo of me using it on my lips and cheeks. I'd love to know if you decided to give it a try. Three other brilliant soft matte products From the brand that launched one of the first dual lip and cheek products comes this soft-matte multitasking blush for the face. I love this velvety whipped cream-to-powder formula, which comes in 12 flattering shades. There's no need for a brush, either: just pat on and go. I love the pinky shade Peony. Pot Rouge Velvet Matte by Bobbi Brown, £32, Bobbi Brown Powder blushers have a bad reputation in general, for looking too drying on the skin, but this powder packs a punch in colour without looking too cakey on the skin. Apply it on the apples of the cheeks for a pretty, long-lasting flush. The shade Mia is a beautiful rose. SuperSuede Radiant Blush Powder by Saie, £22, Cult Beauty Also new this month, these lip and cheek colours are luxurious and highly effective if you're looking to splurge on some new make-up. Available in three shades – a deep nude, a fresh pink and a berry – they give a velvety finish on the cheeks and lips. Colour Cloud, £47, Sisley

CHARLOTTE TILBURY MEMORIAL DAY SALE 2025 $28 $35 20% off Buy Now Original Pillow Talk too light for an everyday shade? No worries! Pillow Talk Medium may be for you. CHARLOTTE TILBURY MEMORIAL DAY SALE 2025 $28 $35 20% off Buy Now If a pretty bright pink is what you're looking for this season, you can't go wrong with Charlotte Tilbury's Gracefully Pink. Formerly known as Amazing Grace, this Matte Revolution Lipstick has a stunning medium-pink coral hue that'll completely brighten your complexion just right. Unlike Pillow Talk, which is a great everyday neutral, this is the kind of lipstick you'll want to wear when you want to make a statement. It's bold, beautiful, and a total stunner. CHARLOTTE TILBURY MEMORIAL DAY SALE 2025 $28 $35 20% off Buy Now Speaking of total stunners, say hello to M.I. Kiss. This sultry lipstick is described as a 'chic natural berry' that gives you a lit-from-within glow. I loved this lipstick back when it was called Bond Girl, and still love it to this day. It's a good everyday shade if you're looking for something a little darker than the Pillow Talk pink and want to look totally put together. It's also a lipstick that I've gotten a ton of 'What lipstick is that' comments on. In short, highly recommend. CHARLOTTE TILBURY MEMORIAL DAY SALE 2025 $28 $35 20% off Buy Now Charlotte Tilbury's Matte Revolution Lipstick in Walk of No Shame is another iconic shade that's sure to give you a confidence boost. It's another gorgeous berry that leans more red than M.I. Kiss above. Per its description, it's a lippie that inspires joy, empowerment, and seduction. CHARLOTTE TILBURY MEMORIAL DAY SALE 2025 SheKnows' Shopping Editor Pick! $30 $38 21% off Buy Now If you're willing to splurge a little more on a lipstick that I swear is the perfect everyday shade, consider grabbing Charlotte Tilbury's Hot Lips Lipstick 2 in Glowing Jen. This universally flattering 'beachy rose' is part of CT's gorgeous line of celeb-inspired shades. As you might've guessed by 'beachy' and 'Jen,' this lipstick was inspired by the one and only Jennifer Aniston. I love that it's a shade that you can easily apply on-the-go, no mirror required. It also has a way of brightening your face, especially on those no-makeup or minimal makeup days. I find it super hydrating and lip-plumping (without the uncomfortable tingly-ness). Best part? The lipstick is refillable and will save you money in the long run. More Top Deals from SheKnows Is Walmart+ Worth It? Mystery Solved? The Case of Marilyn Monroe's Stolen Lipstick
Makeup artist and historian Erin Parsons sent me a mysterious email last week. 'I wanted to let you know first that I'm breaking a big story,' she shared cryptically. 'It's a big story on Marilyn Monroe's missing lipstick. I can't say much else now, but curious if you are interested in this?' My answer, from both a personal and professional point of view, was a big yes. Yesterday, Parsons took to TikTok to share the sordid story behind Monroe's signature red lip. 'In December 1987, in Los Angeles, friends dedicated a time capsule to Marilyn Monroe,' she begins. Artifacts inside the vessel, created by artist and sculptor Bill Mack, included a mink cap owned by the actor and a lock of her hair, all meant to be unearthed on August 5, 2062—the 100th anniversary of Monroe's tragic death. On the day the capsule was set to be buried, Monroe's longtime makeup artist, Allan 'Whitey' Snyder, also added something to the collection: a tube of her lipstick. 'Whitey's contribution to the event was a red lipstick used to make up Marilyn's body in death,' Parson says, reading from a newspaper clipping. 'He told the gathering that he had used this red color for half her career and that he had specially made it for her.' Of course, we all know about Monroe's singular beauty look: perfectly curled bob, a sultry cat eye, and a bright red pout. It's something Gabriela Hernandez, founder of Bésame Cosmetics, recreated in her 2021 limited-edition collection dedicated to the actor, producing a true red meant to exactly match the shade worn by Monroe as Sugar Kane in Some Like It Hot. (The color was aptly named 'Some Like It (red) Hot.') But Monroe's time capsule was never buried—instead, according to Parsons, it was actually stolen. To find out what happened, Parsons reached out to the three living people who had been part of the project. First, Hollywood Heritage's archivist Richard Adkins described the entire event as 'not a happy story.' Parsons then spoke to the event's publicist, Chris Harris, before coming to her conclusion: 'I'm not accusing Bill Mack of having the lipstick, but some others are, and I'm going to show you all of the evidence that I found.' Hear all the (rather compelling!) proof in her video, below.
