Emirates bans in-flight use of power banks citing fire safety risks

Emirates will prohibit passengers from using power banks during flights starting October 1, the Dubai-based airline said on Thursday, citing growing safety concerns over lithium battery incidents in the aviation industry. The carrier will still allow passengers to bring one power bank under 100 watt hours onboard but said the devices cannot be used to charge personal electronics or be charged using the aircraft's power supply while in flight. In a statement, Emirates said the decision followed 'a comprehensive safety review' as power bank usage has grown significantly among passengers in recent years, leading to an increasing number of lithium battery-related incidents across the aviation sector. Power banks must now be stored in seat pockets or bags under seats rather than overhead bins, and passengers must ensure capacity rating information is visible on the devices. The existing ban on power banks in checked luggage remains in place. The airline cited 'thermal runaway' as the primary safety concern - a process where heat generation within a battery cell exceeds its ability to dissipate heat, potentially leading to fires, explosions and toxic gas releases. While most smartphones have internal systems to prevent overcharging, many basic power banks lack these safeguards, Emirates said. 'Power banks primarily utilize lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries,' the airline said in the statement, adding that damage or overcharging can trigger the dangerous thermal runaway process. The new restrictions will keep power banks in accessible cabin locations where flight attendants can quickly respond to any incidents, Emirates said. 'Safety is one of Emirates' core values, and a cornerstone of all operations and practices,' the airline said.

Emirates to Ban All Power Bank Use on Flights from Oct 1

Flying Emirates from October 1? Your power bank can tag along, but you can't use it — not even sneakily under your sweater. No charging your phone from it, and no charging the power bank itself from the plane's outlets. It's coming onboard for the ride, nothing more. What You Can Still Bring You're allowed one power bank under 100Wh. It has to have its capacity clearly marked. It can't go in checked baggage, and it can't hide in the overhead bin — it must stay in your seat pocket or bag under the seat in front of you. Why the Crackdown? Lithium battery incidents have been rising worldwide. These little portable chargers can overheat, catch fire, or worse if damaged or overcharged — especially cheaper ones without built-in safety systems. Emirates says keeping them out of use and within reach of crew will help stop small problems from turning into airborne emergencies. The Bottom Line Bring your power bank if you must, but it's just going to be a silent travel buddy. Charge your gadgets before you board — your in-flight entertainment will have to be powered the old-fashioned way.

Emirates sets new rules for power banks on board from October 1

There has been an increase in number of lithium battery-related incidents onboard flights, the airline said Using any kind of power bank is prohibited onboard Emirates' flights, effective from October 1, 2025, the airline has said in a statement. Emirates customers are still permitted to carry one power bank onboard with specific conditions listed below, but the power banks may not be used while in the aircraft cabin — neither to charge devices from the power bank, nor to be charged themselves using the aircrafts' power source. Emirates' new regulations include: Emirates customers may carry one power bank that is under 100 Watt Hours. Power banks may not be used to charge any personal devices onboard. Charging a power bank using the aircraft's power supply is not permitted. All power banks accepted for transport must have capacity rating information available. Power banks may not be placed in the overhead stowage bin onboard the aircraft and must now be placed in the seat pocket or in a bag under the seat in front of you. Power banks are not permitted in checked luggage (existing rule).

Emirates makes changes to safety rules for customer usage of power banks onboard

Muscat: Using any kind of power bank is prohibited onboard Emirates' flights, effective from the 1, October 2025. A power bank is a portable, rechargeable device primarily designed to provide power to other electronic devices such smart phones, tablets, laptops and cameras. Emirates customers are still permitted to carry one power bank onboard with specific conditions listed below, but the power banks may not be used while in the aircraft cabin – neither to charge devices from the power bank, nor to be charged themselves using the aircrafts' power source. Emirates' new regulations include: - Emirates customers may carry one power bank that is under 100 Watt Hours. - Power banks may not be used to charge any personal devices onboard. - Charging a power bank using the aircraft's power supply is not permitted. - All power banks accepted for transport must have capacity rating information available. -Power banks may not be placed in the overhead stowage bin onboard the aircraft and must now be placed in the seat pocket or in a bag under the seat in front of you. -Power banks are not permitted in checked luggage (existing rule). Why is Emirates making this change? After a comprehensive safety review, Emirates is taking a firm and proactive stance to mitigate risk when it comes to power banks onboard. There has been a significant growth in customers using power banks in recent years, resulting in an increasing number of lithium battery-related incidents onboard flights across the wider aviation industry. Power banks primarily utilize lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries, and their function is as a portable battery pack designed to recharge devices on the go. The batteries contain lithium ions suspended in an electrolyte solution. The ions flow through the electrolyte, travelling back and forth between two electrodes as the battery charges and discharges. If the battery is overcharged or damaged, it may result in 'thermal runaway.' Thermal runaway in batteries is a self-accelerating process where heat generation within a battery cell exceeds its ability to dissipate heat, leading to a rapid and uncontrollable temperature increase. This can result in dangerous consequences like fire, explosions, and the release of toxic gases. Most phones and sophisticated lithium battery-powered devices have an internal trickle system which slowly adds current into the battery to prevent overcharging, but many basic power banks may not have this safeguard, increasing the risk. All power banks are subject to the new rules onboard Emirates. Emirates new regulations will significantly reduce risks associated with power banks by prohibiting their use while onboard the aircraft. Storing power banks in accessible locations within the cabin ensures that in the rare event of a fire, trained cabin crew can quickly respond and extinguish the fire.
