San Francisco experiencing coldest summer since 1982, with only two days above 70 degrees

People in the Bay Area have probably noticed it's been a chilly July, and summer in general, but with all of the fog/mist keeping the region cool, there has technically been measurable rainfall during what is normally the driest month of the year. Downtown San Francisco observed rain for four days of the past seven, including Saturday morning. It's not a lot, but it's better than normal by about sixfold. The marine layer has been keeping the area way cooler than normal. In fact, it's the city's coldest summer since 1982. There have been 14 days this year with temperatures above 70 degrees, but only two occurred during the summertime. Normally, the city would have seen 14 days at or above 70 degrees just at this point in the summer, June 1 - July 25. Cooler-than-normal conditions will continue through the end of the month and the beginning of August.

Breezy onshore winds, seasonal temperatures

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Breezy onshore winds and seasonal temperatures continue through midweek. Above normal temperatures are likely to return next weekend across the Bay Area. This morning's marine layer: around 2000′, with more widespread low-level stratus. Breezy winds, particularly across the ocean, coast, and elevated terrain, continue this weekend and peak at 20 – 25 mph. Locally higher gusts to around 30 mph are possible in areas where funneling is favored (for example, the Altamont Pass). High temperatures today are similar to Friday's, with highs in the 70s across the interior and 50s to 60s along the coast. Parts of the North Bay and far eastern Contra Costa/Alameda Counties may reach the low 80s. What stores are open for Memorial Day weekend? In terms of fire weather, conditions have improved in comparison to yesterday, given the deeper marine layer and gentler winds. Nevertheless, while our overall risk is lower, grass fires can still develop and spread, particularly if precautions are not taken for campfires or other outdoors activities, so be careful if you use flames outside, since this afternoon will be breezy, and grasses are drier. If you are heading to the beach this weekend, buoy observations are indicating cold water temperatures (in the low to mid 50s), which can incapacitate even the most experienced swimmer in minutes and may make self rescue nearly impossible. In addition, marine conditions will be hazardous for small crafts due to northwesterly winds gusting between 25 to 40 mph across the waters. Sunday through Monday: temperatures will hold fairly steady in the 50s to 60s along the coast and 70s across the interior. Temperatures warm on Tuesday into the mid 70s to low 80s across the interior before dropping 2-4 degrees on Wednesday after a weak cold front moves through. As high pressure builds in, temperatures will start to increase Thursday into next weekend. Enjoy the upcoming seasonal weather before warmer weather returns next weekend and we enter the summer months. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
