Johor cops to charge father of boy found buried in Negeri Sembilan

The boy, who was reported missing at Taman Bukit Indah in Johor on July 24, was found buried in Jempol, Negeri Sembilan, four days later. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Johor police will file two charges against the father of six-year-old A Tishant, whose body was found buried in Jempol, Negeri Sembilan, last month. State police chief M Kumar said the 36-year-old man will be charged in a Johor Bahru court with assaulting his wife and filing a false missing person's report, Utusan Malaysia reported. However, he said, the charges will only be filed after the murder probe by the Jempol police headquarters is completed. 'In Johor, the investigation against the suspect only involves Sections 323 and 324 of the Penal Code; Section 18 of the Domestic Violence Act 1994 read together with Section 326A of the Penal Code for allegedly assaulting his wife, as well as Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001. 'We have already received instructions to charge the suspect, and this will be done after the murder investigation under Section 302 is completed,' he was quoted as saying at a press conference at the Johor police headquarters today. Tishant was reported missing in Taman Bukit Indah, Iskandar Puteri, on July 24. His body was found four days later, after his father's arrest. An autopsy revealed the boy was strangled with a cable tie. Kumar said police first received a report from the suspect's wife on July 22, alleging domestic abuse and that the man had taken their only child away. He said the suspect was arrested but later released on police bail. He then filed a report claiming he had left his son alone in the car and returned to discover that the boy was missing. However, inconsistencies in his statement led to his re-arrest and, after further questioning, the child's body was discovered.

Missing skateboarder, 13, is found alive four days after vanishing

A 13-year-old Missouri boy missing for more than four days has been found alive in a ravine near his home, but he remains in critical condition after suffering serious injuries, officials confirmed. Dakota 'Cody' Trenkle Jr. was reported missing on Sunday morning after he left home on his skateboard, headed to a friend's house near the 6400 block of Eagle Lane in the Goose Creek Lake community of St. Francois County. When Cody failed to arrive, his family frantically turned to social media in hopes of finding clues about their loved one's mysterious disappearance. With no leads, they contacted local law enforcement, who quickly began circulating flyers for the missing teen. A large-scale search effort ensued, including members of the St. Francois County Sheriff's Department, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, and community volunteers. After days of searching with no success, officials requested assistance from the Farmington Correctional Center K-9 Unit. On Wednesday, with the help of a trained bloodhound named Daryl, search teams tracked Cody's scent through dense, rugged terrain. He was located alive around noon that day - 540 yards from where his skateboard had been found earlier and about half a mile from his home. He was discovered lying in approximately one foot of water at the bottom of a steep ravine, which featured a 240-foot elevation drop, according to FirstAlert4. Officials said Cody suffered a traumatic leg injury, a brain bleed, severe dehydration, and other symptoms of extreme exposure. He had been without food or clean water for nearly 96 hours. After his discovery, Cody was airlifted by ARCH helicopter to a hospital in St. Louis, where he remained in critical condition as of Thursday evening. 'This was an incredibly difficult search, both physically and emotionally,' St. Francois County Sheriff Jeff Crites told KSDK5. 'Finding Dakota alive after so many days is nothing short of a miracle. We are thankful to everyone who contributed their time and energy to bring him home.' Cody's aunt, Brittney Van Volkenburg - a volunteer firefighter with the Goose Creek Lake Fire Department - helped coordinate the search effort. 'I posted the flyer in our department group chat and said, "This is my nephew. We need to get a search team together," she said, adding that 'everyone was immediately on board'. After Cody's skateboard was located on Wednesday, Van Volkenburg contacted the correctional facility where she works to expedite the K-9 response. Within minutes, bloodhound Daryl and his handlers began tracking. Lieutenant Virginia Stafford, one of the K-9 handlers, told KSDK5 that Daryl quickly picked up Cody's scent and led them through overgrown terrain. '[Daryl] did lead us down to him,' Stafford said. She recalled that when they reached Cody, 'he was looking at us whenever we got up to him,' though he was too dehydrated to speak. Despite his battered condition, Van Volkenburg believes her nephew was 'excited to see us for sure.' Authorities believe that overnight rain may have helped cool Cody's body and prevent further complications. Miraculously, and despite his injuries, doctors found no broken bones - and according to his family, he is currently being kept in a medically induced coma to help stabilize brain activity. 'He was born a preemie. He's been a fighter since the day he was born,' Van Volkenburg said. 'We're hoping he pulls through. It's still rocky, but we're praying.' The St. Francois County Sheriff's Department said the incident appears to be accidental, with no evidence of foul play, however, the investigation remains ongoing. Emergency crews involved in the rescue effort - including the Goose Creek Fire Department, Farmington Correctional Center K-9 Unit, St. Francois County Ambulance District, and ARCH Medical - were praised for their collaboration. 'This response showcases the power of community collaboration and multi-agency coordination,' the sheriff's office said. 'We are incredibly grateful to every individual who played a role in bringing Dakota home.' Cody's family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover his medical expenses.

'He wouldn't do this to us': Search continues for missing boy as mother pleads for answers

The family of a missing boy are desperately searching for answers as community members join ongoing ground searches in Edmonton. Samuel Bird, 14, left home to visit a friend in the Canora neighbourhood in west Edmonton the evening of June 1. He was later reported to be seen leaving the friend's home on foot, but never returned home, according to Edmonton police. He has not been seen by friends or family since. Samuel's mother, Alanna Bird, and her family have been going on ground searches, looking for more information on what might have happened. Her concern is that her boy has been hurt. "We have our ups and downs. I'm just hoping we could find out what happened to him, or some closure, because that's the really hard part, is not knowing, just hoping for a miracle," Bird told CBC on Thursday. "Maybe he's out there somewhere, but Sam wouldn't do this to us. And when I say he wouldn't, he wouldn't. He always kept in touch with me no matter what." Bird is described as being five foot eight inches tall with a slim build. He has brown hair and brown eyes. The circumstances behind her son's disappearance has left Bird seeking answers. "I just want Samuel to know that no one gave up on him and how much he was loved and supported," Bird said. The first ground search was held on July 19 in the river valley near Victoria Park. Another one will take place this Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Terra Losa north parking lot at 9908 170 Street. MLA Jodi Calahoo Stonehouse was among dozens who conducted a ground search for Samuel this past weekend. Stonehouse, who is MLA for Edmonton-Rutherford, said it was inspiring seeing many members of the community help search. "It was a difficult day, and it has been difficult since, as we continue to search," Stonehouse said. "[The family] is doing everything they can to find their child, to find their grandchild, and are absolutely frustrated with the systems, and they also want to make sure that this never happens to another family and that change is made so people are supported and that there are folks doing the work of looking for missing children." The disappearance of Bird, who is from Paul First Nation, is an example of the continued colonial crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous people, Stonehouse said. The latest data from the federal government shows 225 Indigenous people were victims of homicide across Canada in 2022 with 169 being men and boys. About 33 per cent of the male victims were reported missing at the time of their death. "I'm thankful for the Red Dress Day and now the Blue Jean Jacket Day as both days are used to create awareness that Indigenous people are going missing in this province and in this country, and sadly, they're often turning up murdered with very little information, no one's held accountable," Stonehouse said. "It takes all of us to change the situation. If you know something, reach out to the authorities … I mean, there are little things that all of us can do to make our cities, our province and our country a safe place for everybody." Bird said she has received a series of disturbing, violent videos and images, allegedly involving her son. Police said they are investigating. "The EPS is aware of these images circulating online depicting violent events. Investigators are working to determine the source and authenticity of the images and as such, at this time, the EPS cannot confirm whether this is connected to the missing 14-year-old youth, Samuel Bird," EPS communications advisor Cheryl Voordenhout said in a statement on Wednesday. CBC also requested further information on why EPS put out a news release on July 11 about Bird's disappearance, more than a month after he was reported missing. "With respect to the timeline, it's important to note that a news release is not the first step in a missing persons investigation, and it is not the only thing being done to find a missing person. Officers have a number of investigative tasks they complete, often before a news release is considered," Voordenhout said. "The timing of a media release is carefully considered within the broader context of an investigation. I can assure you that Samuel's disappearance is being investigated extremely thoroughly and with the utmost urgency." A candlelight vigil will be held on Sunday at 5 p.m. at Rossdale Memorial Park after the next ground search.
