Cumbrian school hosts 'World of Work Day' careers fair with 22 employers

Pupils from a Cumbrian school participated in mock interviews with external companies as part of a careers fair. The Nelson Thomlinson School in Wigton recently held its annual 'World of Work Day' on Friday, July 10. This event featured 22 external companies conducting mock interviews for Year 10 pupils and holding a Careers Fair for Year 7, 8, and 10 pupils. The event was designed to potentially influence pupils' post-16 choices. Pupils also had the opportunity to explore a wide range of career opportunities through employers from the area, to help them discover potential career pathways they may not have considered previously. The day was organised, as it is every year, by Julia Mullarkey, the school's careers leader. Planning for the event starts before Christmas, with the school contacting previous supporters and inviting parents to suggest businesses from the area they would like their child to learn about. Year 10 pupils are asked about their current industry interests, and their interests are closely matched with the range of employers, colleges, and training providers invited to attend the careers fair and conduct mock interviews. Pupils prepare their CVs during career and PSHE lessons in the spring term, and each pupil receives a personal timetable of events across the morning. The timetable includes suggested questions for all the employers that have a stand in the careers fair. Year 9 pupils, who have just made their GCSE options, also get to explore the careers fair to link their new subjects with careers. The school said they recruit employers based on feedback from pupils to ensure the event is fully relevant and meaningful. This is done through a pre- and post-event survey that helps the school identify the needs and interests of the pupils. The data also shows the positive impact of the event on young people, with some even securing future job offers on the day as a result of the mock interview and CV-building process. The event was hailed as a success by the school and the participating companies, with many pupils reportedly gaining valuable insights into their potential future careers. The companies that participated in the mock interviews included Bensons, Innovia, Dodd Accountants, System People, Land & Nature Skills Service, Steadmans Roofing, OT University of Cumbria, Eden Valley Hospice, and David Allen. Other companies in attendance included Seavor Chartered, Armstrong & Watson, Paragon Vets, Fluid Productions, Futamura, Lloyd Motor Group, CCL Secure, Cumbria Police, DNV, Harrison & Hetherington, and Halo by Alix. The careers fair saw participation from the likes of Bensons, Futamura, Innovia Scottish Racing Academy, Land & Nature Skills Service, Belle Vue Vets, and Armstrong & Watson. Bendalls Engineering, Dodd Accountancy, Manchester Uni, UKAEA & Sellafield, Blood Bikes, Harrison & Hetherthington Ltd, PPM, Myerscough College, Heidelberg Materials, Chysalis, BIFFA, and BAE Sytems also took park. As did David Allen, System People, University of Cumbria, Riverside Recruitment, HSBC, Carlisle United, Lloyd Motor Group, Gen2, Seavor Chartered, Wigton Computer Museum, NHS/CNTW, NCIC, and RAF.
