Collision in Bancroft injures 5
Five people were injured Wednesday in a collision on Highway 28 in Bancroft, Ont., that may have been precipitated by a fallen muffler, according to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). Officers responded to the collision around 3:30 p.m. on the highway between Bronson Road and Deltor Road, according to a news release issued Thursday morning. Two cars and a motorcycle were involved, police said. Five people from the cars were transported to hospital with injuries "ranging from minor to life-threatening," police said. The collision may have been caused by a muffler that fell off a vehicle onto the highway, police said. "The OPP wants to remind everyone to ensure proper maintenance is maintained on your vehicle and make sure items being transported are securely fastened to the vehicle," they warned. The investigation is ongoing and police are asking anyone with information or footage of the incident to contact them. The collision occurred 160 kilometres west of downtown Ottawa.

Police target vehicles with tinted windshields in enforcement blitz
A vehicle with a tinted windshield is pictured in this file image. Police in Innisfil and Bradford handed out dozens of tickets to motorists during a traffic enforcement blitz targeting tinted windshields. South Simcoe police held the campaign throughout the month of June and said officers conducted multiple traffic stops resulting in 50 tickets for windshield tinting offences. "Unlawful windshield tinting not only violates the law but also endangers all road users. Drivers are reminded to know the law and ensure their vehicles comply with visibility standards," the police service stated. The Highway Traffic Act prohibits windshield tinting, noting it reduces a driver's visibility, especially at night, therefore posing a serious safety risk. The offence for tinting or coating the front of a windshield on any vehicle is $110 after surcharges. July Initiative South Simcoe police say throughout this month officers will shift their focus to target muffler and exhaust-related offences. 'This initiative comes in response to numerous noise complaints and concerns about non compliant vehicles,' the service stated. Police warn drivers will receive fines for vehicles without a muffler, or an improper muffler that emits excessive smoke or unreasonable noise.

Driver's noisy muffler leads to traffic stop and firearm recovery
A driver's noisy muffler caught the attention of a Barrie police officer on Saturday morning. Just before 10 a.m., a loud vehicle was spotted by police travelling northbound on Essa Road. An officer stopped the vehicle and determined that the man's mufflers were modified. As the officer continued to investigate, the driver was unable to surrender a valid permit; his permit had expired nearly 14 months ago. When the officer checked the man's driver's license, it was confirmed that it had been suspended last year. The 24-year-old from Barrie has been charged with an improper muffler, driving a motor vehicle with no validated permit and driving while under suspension. Police also found an alleged airsoft firearm in the man's vehicle. Officials remind drivers that modified mufflers will always catch the attention of those around them, especially police. It is never advisable to travel with a replica or airsoft pistol as these will be treated by police as real until they are confirmed otherwise. The driver is expected to before the courts at a later date.
