A drone, a rental truck and a curly red wig: how Chappell Roan's viral Sask.-focused teaser was produced

In a teaser for her upcoming single, Chappell Roan's signature red hair can be seen fluttering against blue Prairie sky, out the open window of a moving van, as the singer coos that if her longing for her ex isn't gone in four months, "I'm movin' to Saskatchewan." The video opens on a Saskatchewan licence plate, features canola fields and grain bins, and ends just as the moving van drives past the "Welcome to Saskatchewan: Land of Living Skies" border sign. The video left some wondering if Roan actually came to the province to film the teaser for The Subway single. Unfortunately for fans, the answer is no. The red hair was a wig, according to Jill Dukart, a content creator with Captive Media, a Regina-based marketing company that filmed the teaser. "I curled it to look like her hair," Dukart said. Roan has been name-dropping Saskatchewan for over a year, whenever she performs The Subway live, but the singer announced the single will officially be released on July 31 at 8 p.m. ET and a music video will come out the next morning. The Saskatchewan-laden teaser video for the single dropped last week. Warning: this video contains explicit language: It's sparked increased interest in the Prairie province online, especially among local fans. Regina Mayor Chad Bachynski told CBC Kids News he is "thrilled" about the mention, writing in an emailed statement, "It's not every day that a Grammy-winning artist gives Saskatchewan a lyrical shoutout." "No one ever talks about Saskatchewan. No one even knows how to pronounce it," Dukart said. "Having this huge star sing about us, pronounce it properly" is great to see, she said. How it happened Dukart described making the teaser video as "a whirlwind" and a dream experience. It all started with a phone call from Universal Music Group Canada asking if Captive Media would be interested in helping out one of their artists. The team agreed and asked for a follow-up email with more details, Dukart said. "The title of the e-mail was 'Confidential Chappell Roan Social Media Campaign," and we all start freaking out," Dukart said. She said Universal Music Group Canada gave little direction for the footage, only asking the agency to rent a moving van, film it driving it past the welcome to Saskatchewan sign at the border — iPhone footage would do — and get a Saskatchewan licence plate with the song's title. But Dukart said the team wanted to go bigger and do their best to show off Saskatchewan with different shot options. "We went with a drone and everything," Dukart said. "I think it was more than they were expecting." She said the team is very happy seeing the attention the footage has received. They did it all on a tight timeline. The request came on a Friday, Dukart said, and "they wanted the footage by Tuesday, so we scrambled all weekend to make it happen." The team's designer made the vanity Saskatchewan licence plate with the label THE SBWY by wrapping an existing licence plate. They secured a moving truck and a driver, but the red wig that Universal Music Group Canada initially planned to expedite wouldn't make it on time, Dukart said. "They asked us to find one." As for who wore the red wig in the singer's absence, "it was actually the worker from the company that we rented the moving truck from," Dukart said. In a 2024 interview with Canadian music journalist Nardwuar the Human Serviette, Roan said she "owes it" to fans to actually come to the province. "I can't sing a song about Saskatchewan and not go there and play a show," Roan said. She said she was looking at venues to try to make it happen. Saskatchewan MLA Nathaniel Teed, who is openly gay, and the Opposition NDP put out a statement saying they would love to collaborate "on an act of joyful queer resistance" and welcome Chappell to Saskatchewan. In The Subway, Roan laments an ex-lover with green hair and a beauty mark, whose perfume haunts her. "I'm still counting down all of the days 'till you're another girl on the subway," she sings in the post-chorus. Dukart said she can't stop singing the song ahead of its official release. "I think it's going to be bumping in the office for a while. We can't stop playing Pink Pony Club around here."

Baker Boy Announces Long-Awaited New Album ‘Djandjay', Shares ‘Lightning'

Local hip-hop superstar and certified ARIA-snatcher Baker Boy is entering a new era — and it's powerful, personal, and positively ~charged~. Today, the proud Yolŋu artist officially announced his long-awaited sophomore album DJANDJAY (pronounced 'jan-jay'), landing October 10 via Island Records. Alongside the announcement, he's also shared the LP's third single 'Lightning' ft. REDD., which comes packing a cheeky music video with a deeper message. Baker Boy – 'LIGHTNING' ft. REDD. Sonically bouncy and lyrically bold, 'Lightning' balances confident swagger with cutting real talk. 'People are always going to have opinions,' Baker Boy explains in a press statement, 'but I've learned to look past the noise and protect my peace.' And that energy absolutely crackles through the track — which flips between English, Yolŋu Matha and Burarra in a flex of language, power and pride. The accompanying clip also continues the epic visual saga that the rapper has been cooking up with his recent releases. Filmed inside the historic colonial-era Werribee Mansion, 'Lightning' sees an all-First Nations, Black and POC cast being served by balanda (non-First Nations) butlers. It's playful, but cuts deep: cheeky in tone, but sharp in commentary. As for the album, DJANDJAY is shaping up to be Baker Boy's most honest and evolved work to date — a full-circle moment rooted in culture, grief, and growth. Named after both his late grandmother and a Yolŋu spiritual octopus, the album blends ancestral energy with futuristic flair and features a stacked list of collaborators, including Thelma Plum, Emma Donovan, Kee'ahn, Gold Fang and more. 'This is my strongest, most powerful work yet,' Baker Boy declares. 'It's about truth. It's about defiance. It's me.' Following up his ARIA-sweeping Gela LP was never going to be easy, but with DJANDJAY, it sounds like Baker Boy is on course to level-up. You can pre-order the record right here. Jessie Murph sparks outrage over controversial music video depicting domestic violence, pornography

Jessie Murph has fans in an uproar. The 20-year-old singer, who has been compared to Amy Winehouse, sparked a social media firestorm over the music video to her risqué new song 1965. The video, which came out July 18, has been accused of glorifying pornography and domestic violence due to its graphic nature. Fans are particularly upset over a shocking sex scene that takes place in the middle of the video. In addition, a woman who appears to be Murph is depicted tied up while face down on a couch in the video. Fans flooded the comments section of the song's YouTube upload — which has over 7 million views — to express their displeasure. 'The way my jaw dropped the floor, there's still time to unrelease this,' one fan wrote. 'The fact it's been 5 days or whatever since the video had been uploaded and YouTube still hasn't blurred that out is crazy work,' a different comment read. A third person said, 'I didn't think it would be this bad. I am forever traumatised this is diabolical.' 'Since when is pornography allowed on YouTube?' someone else asked. More fans slammed Murph for including a child in the video right before the sex scene. 'So so messed up,' a fan said. 'Not only is this song ahh, putting a child before such an explicit scene is crazy,' a different fan noted. 1965, which is from Murph's newly released second studio album Sex Hysteria, is filled with raunchy lyrics. 'We'd go to church on a Sunday, wake up on Monday/You'd go to work and I'd stay home and sing and do fun things/I might get a little slap-slap, but you wouldn't hit me on Snapchat,' Murph sings. 'I think I'd give up a few rights/If you would just love me like it's 1965,' she also sings. The Post has reached out to Murph's reps for comment. In a recent interview with Teen Vogue, Murph spoke about the intense reactions her music evokes from fans. 'I'm glad that I make people have some sort of reaction. I'd rather them be like, 'I hate you,' or 'I love you,' rather than, 'I feel indifferently,' I guess,' the Alabama native stated. 'But still, I just find it f***ing weird … I don't have any hate in my heart … That's been something that I've been trying to figure out how to navigate and not react and get mad because it totally makes me be like, 'F**k you, b*tch,'' she added. Days after releasing her new album, Murph's performance to 1965 on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon was similarly bashed by fans online. 'how dare anybody be comparing this to Amy … you should all be ashamed smh,' one fan wrote. 'everything about this feels like an SNL skit. how is this real,' another fan said. Murph was discovered by uploading vlogs and covers on TikTok and YouTube. She had her breakthrough with her 2021 single Always Been You, three years before releasing her debut studio album, That Ain't No Man That's the Devil. She's collaborated with Diplo, Maren Morris, Teddy Swims and more.
