How to standout in the hit necktie trend
If you've ever struggled to pull together an outfit that feels fresh and bold, we've got three words for you: tie it up!
The necktie, a once strictly corporate and male-coded accessory, has made a triumphant return to fashion's frontlines - and we're completely obsessed. But this time, it's women who are making it look better than ever.
No longer reserved for boardrooms or school uniforms, the tie is the unexpected piece that instantly elevates your outfit from a soft five to a solid 10.
A trend with history
Though it's currently dominating our feeds, this trend is far from new. The roots of women wearing ties trace back to the late 20th century, when style icons like Princess Diana and Madonna began borrowing from menswear to make powerful fashion statements.
One of the most iconic moments? Julia Roberts rocking an oversized boxy suit and tie at the 1990 Golden Globes, an unapologetic and unforgettable moment.
According to L'Officiel, the modern woman tie trend was born from the spirit of rebellion – challenging gender norms while offering a bold, unorthodox flair. The look became a symbol of both empowerment and playfulness.
Stylist and personal shopper Tondani says, 'The tie, for the longest time, has been a masculine accessory and now that it's taken over womenswear, it's become such a powerful statement-making piece.'
A modern revival
Fast forward to 2025, and the tie is back, bolder and more stylish than ever. We've spotted it on red carpets like the Met Gala, with celebs like Zendaya, Doechii and Teyana Taylor incorporating the tie into their high-fashion looks.

South African media personality Linda Mtoba and Pamela Mtanga are giving the trend their own spin, pairing ties with chic tailoring or layered over feminine silhouettes for that perfect blend of edge and elegance.
Linda sported a winter-ready outfit featuring a crisp white shirt, a sleek black tie and a structured coat that screamed quiet power.

'I think the necktie is making a comeback in womenswear because it can adapt to anyone's personal style,' says Tondani.
How to rock the tie Trend
Whether you're going for preppy, punk, or polished, the tie can work with any aesthetic. Here's how to style it according to the New York Times:
• Keep it classic: Pair a skinny black tie with a crisp shirt and wide-leg trousers for a clean, tailored look.
• Layer it up: Drape it over a knit or tuck it into a vest for added texture and dimension.
• Play with proportions: Try oversized suits or blazers with bold-printed ties for a strong fashion statement.
• Feminine edge: Contrast the masculinity of the tie with a mini skirt, knee-high boots or glam makeup.
'If you're trying the tie look for the first time, keep it classic,' says Tondani.
'Wear your tie with a shirt and go formal with suit pants or prep it up with a cute skirt, stockings and loafers.'
