Shakira Concert Measles Exposure Report Explained

Reports about a potential measles exposure at a Shakira concert have been circulating on the internet following the singer's performance at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, last Thursday. Now fans are curious to know more about the illness. The New Jersey Department of Health declared on Tuesday that a non-New Jersey resident attendee of the May 15 concert had measles. The officials urged those who have attended the concert or believe that they have been exposed to the disease to reach out to healthcare providers before visiting any medical office or emergency department. They insisted that people must not go to a medical facility without notifying the staff of the said facility beforehand (via NBC News). According to Mayo Clinic, Measles is a highly contagious infectious disease caused by the virus Morbillivirus hominis. Early symptoms of it include high fever, dry cough, runny nose, and inflamed eyes. Given that the concert took place last Thursday, these symptoms of the disease can show up as late as June 6. Further, a rash often appears on the face about three to five days after the initial symptoms. It then spreads rapidly across the neck, torso, arms, legs, and feet. Small, white marks known as Koplik spots also appear inside the mouth of the patient. Someone who has measles can develop pneumonia, diarrhea, and other complications. In some rare cases, blindness, seizures, and inflammation of the brain can also happen. An airborne disease, measles generally spreads through direct contact with the mouth or nasal secretions. Vaccination and other preventive measures for measles exist, though once the disease develops, there is no specific treatment. What health professionals do instead is treat superinfections and ensure that the patient is hydrated. Those who are not fully vaccinated or have not have measles before are at risk of infection. In 2000, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that measles had been eradicated in the US due to widespread vaccination. However, in recent years, there has reportedly been a resurgence of the disease due to a variety of factors. Measles Warning Issued After Metlife Stadium Concert

Health officials in New Jersey are issuing a warning regarding the spread of measles after a massive concert at MetLife Stadium earlier this month. Officials say that a non-New Jersey resident attended a Shakira concert on May 15 in East Rutherford. They advise anyone who attended the show and suspects they may have been exposed to call their health care provider before traveling to doctors or emergency services unannounced. The officials also noted that those at risk include the unvaccinated and those who have not had measles in the past. Symptoms could be dormant until June 6, requiring those who suspect exposure to exercise caution over the next few weeks. "Individuals — especially parents, guardians, health care providers, and caregivers — are urged to be aware of the symptoms of this highly contagious virus," said the New Jersey Department of Health. The news comes after reports of a major measles outbreak in Texas. Two children have died and hundreds of people have developed symptoms associated with the disease. Measles is among the world's most infectious diseases, and is particularly harmful to young children and babies. According to the CDC, one in 20 unvaccinated children who are infected with the disease develop pneumonia. One out of every 1,000 unvaccinated children develop encephalitis, a potentially fatal form of swelling within the brain. Measles is primarily spread through droplets from coughs and sneezes, and those droplets can linger in the air for up to two hours. New Jersey officials did not note where the person sat at the concert, but said that anyone at the stadium from 7:30 PM to 1 AM on the night of the show could potentially be exposed. The health scare comes after the show was also affected by transportation issues. A short strike from transit workers eliminated bus and train service to the venue, causing many to file into coach buses out of New York City to make sure they could get to and from the show. Beyonce is set to perform at Metlife Stadium this week, but officials are assuring fans that there is no risk of infection at the upcoming event in relation to this alert.

Shakira Concertgoers Potentially Exposed to Measles Outbreak

Originally appeared on E! Online Measles outbreaks can happen whenever, wherever. The New Jersey Department of Health announced May 20 that people who attended Shakira's concert at MetLife Stadium just outside of New York City in East Rutherford May 15 may have been exposed to measles. Officials alerted the public about a "newly identified case of measles," sharing in a news release that a non-New Jersey resident attended the concert "while infectious." They said that individuals are "urged to be aware of the symptoms of this highly contagious virus" and to make sure they're up to date on their shots. The NJDOH went on to caution that anyone who attended the "Hips Don't Lie" hitmaker's show "may have been exposed to measles" and instructed "anyone who suspects an exposure or illness" to call a health care provider before physically going to a medical office. E! News has reached out to Shakira, MetLife Stadium and Live Nation for comment and has yet to hear back. Officials noted that measles symptoms typically include cough, fever and a rash "that usually appears between three and five days after symptoms begin." They also noted that "potentially exposed individuals, if infected, could develop symptoms as late as June 6, 2025." More from E! The potential measles outbreak at Shakira's concert comes a few months after the 48-year-old had to cancel a February show in Peru after being hospitalized. "I am sorry to inform you all that last night I had to go to the ER for an abdominal issue," the "Beautiful Liar" singer wrote on her Instagram Stories at the time. "The doctors whose care I am currently under have communicated that I am not in good enough condition to perform this evening." Shakira—mom to sons Milan, 12, and Sasha, 10, with ex Gerard Piqué—added that she was "very sad" that she wouldn't be able to take the stage that night. As she explained, "I've been looking forward to reuniting with my incredible fans here in Peru." Earlier that month, Shakira was joined by her sons at the 2025 Grammys in Los Angeles, where she reflected on her personal and professional journey. "I've grown a lot," Shakira told E! News. "I've learned a lot of lessons. Life hasn't always been kind, but it's been a good teacher." Keep reading for more stars who have gone through health scares... Officials warn of potential measles exposure at Shakira concert at MetLife Stadium

New Jersey health officials issued a warning about a potential measles exposure during the Shakira concert at MetLife Stadium. On Tuesday, the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) announced that a non-New Jersey resident attended the concert while infected with the disease. The concert took place from Thursday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Anyone who attended the concert and suspects a measles exposure or illness should call a health care provider before going to any medical office or emergency department, officials said. You should not visit a medical facility without calling ahead. Anyone who was exposed at the concert could develop symptoms as late as June 6. Those who are at risk of being infected by the measles are people who have not been fully vaccinated or have not had measles in the past. The MMR vaccine — which is administered in two doses — is the safest and most effective way to protect yourself against measles, mumps and rubella. The vaccine also prevents complications caused by those three diseases. Health officials recommend that residents stay up to date on routine vaccinations, including MMR shots. Anyone traveling internationally should also be fully vaccinated before traveling and babies between 6 months and 11 months should get one dose of the MMR vaccine before traveling and two more doses after their first birthday. Measles symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose, watery red eyes and a rash that usually appears between three to five days after symptoms begin. The rash normally begins as flat red spots that appear on the face at the hairline and spread downward to the neck, torso, arms, legs and feet. Measles can also cause pneumonia and swelling of the brain. It can also lead to miscarriage in pregnant people, premature birth or a low-birth-weight baby, officials said. The virus spreads through the air when someone coughs or sneezes and can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves the area. People can also get sick when they come in contact with mucus or saliva from an infected person.
