Sinn Féin party leader Mary Lou McDonald recently attended a public meeting held in Wexford. The meeting was organised by Wicklow Wexford TD Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin at a public meeting in the Loch Garman Arms Hotel in Gorey.
Deputy Ó Súilleabháin said that Ireland's participation in European military structures would 'put a nail in the coffin of Irish neutrality'.
He referred to the recent 'Eire' sign which was unearthed at Cahore Point in Wexford as an important project which directly presents the history of neutrality present in Ireland.
'It was done so that the German Luftwaffee would see that the bomber planes were not over Britain, but rather a neutral state. So, this is timely,' he said.
He further said the removal of the triple lock requirement is something that Irish people do not want as shown in opinion polls. 'Would anyone here want to have their son or daughter fight (and possibly die) for Ursula Von der Leyen?' he said.
Deputy Ó Súilleabháin added that people must rally around the matter. He said: 'we need to rally around this issue and point out that it's also a core part of republican and internationalist principles on which the struggle for independence was based on.
'It's a fight that we must win, all of us - SF and non-SF-democrats. We all need to come together and co-operate in a broader front as the alternative is the unthinkable and is not a legacy that any of us can leave for our children or our children's children.'
Earlier that day, Mary Lou McDonald visited and cut the ribbon on Deputy Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin's new office which is located opposite the Theatre Hall. The office opened at the beginning of the year.
'We were delighted to have Mary Lou McDonald down to officially open the office, it was a lovely evening and we're having great success with the office,' Deputy Ó Súilleabháin added.
