Cannes Film Festival chaos as power cut strikes hours before awards do
The prestigious Cannes Film Festival has been struck by chaos today – as a power cut has struck in the French city.
Hours before the Palme d'Or, the ceremony where the highest prize of the Best Feature Film of Cannes is awarded, is set to take place, the power in various parts of the city went out around 10am local time, which is 9am in UK time. Those in Cannes began posting about the power outage on social media.
One person, who was at Cannes station when the outage took place, wrote in a tweet, translated from French: "There's an improvisation at #Cannes station following the citywide power outage."
Meanwhile, festival attendees reported screenings had switched off mid-way through, according to Screen Daily.
However, it appears the film festival were prepared for such an event as the festival said in a statement to Screen International: "The Palais des Festivals has switched to an independent power supply, allowing all scheduled events and screenings, including the Closing Ceremony, to proceed as planned and under normal conditions."
