Woman killed in officer-involved shooting with Albuquerque police

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A woman was shot and killed Tuesday morning in an officer-involved shooting with the Albuquerque Police Department. Tuesday evening, APD identified the woman as Desiree Herrera. APD said the shooting happened at the Hotel Parq Central. APD Police Chief Harold Medina said around 4:30 a.m., a call came in from the hotel about a woman in a mental health crisis that they would like to be removed and trespassed from the hotel. Medina said the call was a priority two call, and placed in a cue while several other calls were holding. Chief Medina said around 5:15 a.m., the call was updated that Herrera had broken some items and armed herself with a piece of glass. Officers were sent to the hotel, and as they were en route, a security supervisor showed up at the hotel. Medina said Herrera was able to disarm the security guard and take the guard's gun. When officers arrived on scene, they observed that shots had already been fired into an SUV in the parking lot, and Herrera was waving the firearm and discharged it. Medina said officers gave Herrera commands to drop the firearm. At one point, a round was fired in the direction of officers and struck an SUV in front of them. Officers returned fire, and Herrera was killed on scene. No officers were injured. The Multi-Agency Task Force is investigating the shooting. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Two people killed in Middletown shooting involving police officers identified

Jul. 14—The two people who died Sunday following a Middletown officer-involved shooting on Mohawk Street have been identified, according to the Butler County Coroner's Office. Ronald Hazen Kerr, 60, and Consuelo D. Kerr, 53, died from gun shot wounds, according to the coroner's office. Around 4:42 p.m. Sunday, Middletown police responded to a residence in the 3000 block of Mohawk Street following reports of a woman suffering from a gunshot wound allegedly inflicted by her husband, according to a press release from the city. Upon arrival, the city said officers announced their presence and identified themselves as police officers. While negotiating with the male suspect, the suspect allegedly discharged his weapon at the officers. In response, the city release said officers returned fire, striking the suspect. Upon entering the residence, officers found both the man and woman dead. Parallel investigations are underway regarding their deaths, according to Butler County Prosecutor Mike Gmoser. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations will conduct an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting, and Gmoser will present evidence to a Butler County grand jury. Middletown police are investigating the homicide that led to the call, which resulted in the death of the homicide suspect and his alleged victim. "The fellow who was shot obviously did not heed the warning that I gave in my last press release," Gmoser told Journal-News. "You point a gun at a police officer, you're going to be dead." In late May, there was an officer-involved shooting in Middletown, which resulted in the death of Michael Anthony Baker, 47, of Middletown. Police were cleared of wrongdoing in this case by a Butler County grand jury. "This case should serve as fair warning to all offenders involved in criminal activities that pointing a firearm at a police officer in the performance of his duties will be met with lethal and justified use of force to eliminate the threat," Gmoser said of the ruling. Though this is the second Middletown officer-involved shooting in about two months, Gmoser said the incidents are "random." "There is no systemic problem in Middletown with respect to officer-involved shooting cases," he said. Gmoser praised Middletown Police Chief Earl Nelson for calling in BCI to handle the officer-involved part of the investigation. "Chief Nelson acted very, very swiftly. He heeds that advice, always," Gmoser said. Investigators were on the scene after 9 p.m., collecting evidence from the Mohawk Street home.

Man killed in police-involved shooting at Surrey, B.C., home where woman found dead

B.C.'s police watchdog is investigating the death of a man following an officer-involved shooting at a Surrey, B.C., home on Monday night, while homicide investigators look into the death of a woman found at the scene of the shooting. In a news release, the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) says Surrey RCMP officers responded to reports of an assault at a home near 66A Avenue and 195 Street in Surrey's Clayton Heights neighbourhood around 8:30 p.m. PT on July 7. When police entered the home, they found a man with a weapon. The ensuing interaction led to an officer shooting the man, who died despite aid from police and paramedics, investigators say. Police subsequently found a woman dead inside the home. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) said the woman and man were a couple in their 60s who lived together. They say initial evidence indicates this was a case of intimate partner violence. The IIO is investigating the death of the man, while IHIT is investigating the woman's death. The IIO is called in any time a police-involved incident results in serious harm or death. Both the RCMP and Surrey Police Service officers are active in Surrey as it transitions from the RCMP to an independent police force.

Officers shoot, injure 1 person Monday in Sioux Falls

Officials with the Sioux Falls Police Department say several officers shot and injured a person as they attempted to arrest him on July 7 near the area of West 10th Street and South Garfield Avenue. Assistant Chief Nick Cook, speaking at an 8:30 p.m. media briefing at the Law Enforcement Center, said that multiple officers had been attempting to arrest the unnamed suspect who was wanted on warrants for burglary, possession of a controlled substance and unauthorized ingestion of a controlled substance. Cook said the suspect was also wanted in connection with a July 6 shooting in which someone was shot in the head, and that they were believed to be in possession of a handgun. Cook said that as they attempted to contact the suspect at about 5:40 p.m. that "a firearm was produced," and that several officers fired at him. The suspect was injured, and taken to an area hospital for treatment. Cook said he was not aware of his condition. Cook declined to answer multiple questions about the incident, including the identity of the suspect, stating that the investigation had been turned over to the South Dakota Department of Criminal Investigation and that he was limited in what he could share. B.C.'s police watchdog deployed to officer-involved shooting in Surrey

A police incident in Clayton Heights is seen on Monday, July 7. B.C.'s police watchdog has been deployed to an officer-involved shooting in Surrey's Clayton Heights neighbourhood. The Surrey Police Service says the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is also involved in the case. It appears the situation began around 8:30 p.m. Monday night near 66A Avenue and 195 Street. Neighbours tell CTV News they saw police respond to a home on 66A Avenue and not long after they heard what sounded like four-to-five gunshots. 'Even though it occurred in Surrey, because it involved only RCMP members, the BC RCMP and the (Independent Investigations Office) will be issuing news releases later this morning and SPS will defer to the IIO, as the investigation into the shooting now rests with them,' said Sgt. Lindsey Houghton of the SPS in an email to CTV News Tuesday morning. Houghton could not provide details about the nature or time of the initial call the RCMP were responding to. Dozens of police, fire, and ambulance vehicles were deployed to the scene. The street and the laneway behind it were quickly put behind police tape as officers investigated. The IIO is the civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing. This is a developing story, check back for more information.
