McKinney business owners share concerns over homelessness as city considers new ordinances to address issue

The city of McKinney is considering new ordinances that address the homelessness issue, some local business owners say is getting out of control. "This is not good for my business," Matt Hamilton said at a city work session Tuesday. He owns Yocal BBQ & Grill and other businesses downtown. "We've had people come into the restaurant who are obviously on drugs," he said. "I've actually had it this very table where a lady came up and engaged them, offering her services." Bench dividers have already been installed downtown to discourage sleeping. Now, the city is considering ordinances that would: "It gives us an opportunity and the legal footing to contact and engage this individual, and our history shows that 98%, that's not scientific, that 98% of the time we get voluntary compliance," McKinney Police Chief Joe Ellenburg said. Some McKinney residents have blasted the proposals, calling them a way to criminalize homelessness. "We are working hard to make McKinney a safe place," Hamilton said. Hamilton and other business owners hope the city will move forward and put the ordinances on a future council agenda for a vote.

Did you know? This municipality in Livingston County allows fireworks 365 days a year

Have you ever wondered about the laws of local municipalities that are little known or rarely enforced? We've got a whopper this week. The Daily has started a series highlighting such ordinances in Livingston County, providing a light-hearted look into local government and digging deep to find the unique. Recently, we learned jostling is frowned upon in Green Oak Township. This week, we're looking at Hamburg Township's Code of Ordinances. Hamburg Township allows fireworks every single day of the year. According to Chapter 22: Offenses and Miscellaneous Provisions, Section 22-23, it's legal to use fireworks 365 days a year in Hamburg Township. Local 4 WDIV Detroit recently highlighted the ordinance for the Fourth of July. Fireworks can be used between 11 a.m. and 11:45 p.m. June 29-July 5, and on the Saturday and Sunday before Labor Day and Memorial Day, according to the ordinance. To ring in the new year, fireworks can be used from 11 a.m. Dec. 31 until 1 a.m. Jan. 1. More little-known ordinances: We don't recommend 'jostling' in Green Oak Township But, in a serious break from state law, fireworks can also be used 11 a.m.-10 p.m. every other day of the year. The ordinance is pursuant to the Michigan Fireworks Safety Act, to the chagrin of some locals and the endless entertainment of others. Do you know of any unique, little-known local ordinances?
