St. Clair Country Club's 16th hole makes birdies hard to come by

The 16th hole at St. Clair Country Club is one of the best in the Pittsburgh area and birdies are hard to come by on the difficult par 4. When you talk elite golf holes, you can't pass up St. Clair Country Club. At more than 400 yards, the 16th hole at St. Clair is a tough one. "This is one that everybody kind of gets here and this is like the home stretch coming in," said St. Clair Country Club head golf professional Jason Mull. "This is 418, plays up the hill a little bit. About two years ago, Frontier came in and put that bunker in on the right, because everyone would just bail out over there. Now you can't do that, so they made it even harder." Mull says if you're not hitting the ball your best on any given day at St. Clair, you've got your hands full. A lightning shelter along the fairway provides a good aiming point for the difficult tee shot. An approach shot to a back pin makes for a difficult challenge, as well. "The key at St. Clair is you can't go long anywhere," Mull said. Once you're on the green, the undulating putting surface on the 16th hole doesn't make things any easier. "We're kind of known for firm and fast greens," Mull said. Mull says if you can make a birdie on the 16th, you're gaining on the field. If you want a great par 4, the 16th at St. Clair is one for you. The Club at Nevillewood's 16th hole requires a precise approach

The 16th hole at The Club at Nevillewood is a difficult par 4 that requires a precise approach shot and it's one of the best golf holes in the Pittsburgh area. The Club at Nevillewood is one of a kind, the only course in the Pittsburgh area designed by Jack Nicklaus. Nevillewood is not only scenic, but also very challenging and the toughest hole on the golf course very well could be the 16th hole. "A fantastic hole," said Nevillewood head golf professional Cory Livingston. The 16th hole can play as long as 440 yards and demands a great shot off the tee. From the tee box, a straight shot will leave you in position for a good approach shot, where things make a bit of a right turn towards the green. The slick putting surface has a bit of a shelf and with a back left pin, approach shots that miss to the right will be penalized as they'll fall even farther away from the hole. "Never get upset about a shot to the center of a green, except when there's two different edges there," Livingston said. For approach shots that end up trailing down to the lower shelf, uphill putts to the back of the green will have a right to left break on them, generally. Totteridge Golf Club's 13th hole has bunkers challenging every shot

The 13th hole at Totteridge Golf Club is one of the best in western Pennsylvania and has several bunkers that present different challenges on every shot. World renowned golf architect Rees Jones designed over 270 golf courses including 14 that have hosted a major championship and four that have hosted the Ryder Cup. He also designed Totteridge Golf Club in Westmoreland County, which features a fantastic layout and the 13th hole there has everything you want in a par 4 with bunkers coming into play several times. "A really challenging tee shot here where you have to kind of thread the needle in between two groups of bunkers," said Totteridge Golf Club head professional Brian Klocek. "Then it sets up for a really challenging second shot into a two-tiered green." The 13th is a monster and with five sets of tees, it can play as long as 460 yards. From the white tees, its around 240 yards to carry the left fairway bunker and an ideal tee shot would be a cut off the left edge of the trap, landing in the middle of the fairway. Where you'll want to land your approach shot will depend on the pin position and uphill putts from the left side of the green will tend to trail away to the right a bit. If you can stay out of the bunkers in the fairway and around the green, par on the 13th hole is a good score.
