Ohtani's big homer and Smith's 2 blasts help Dodgers end home woes with 5-2 win over Twins
Los Angeles Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani (17) is congratulated by teammates after hitting a two-run home run against the Minnesota Twins during the first inning of a baseball game in Los Angeles, Monday, July 21, 2025. (AP Photo/Jayne Kamin-Oncea) baseball By BETH HARRIS Shohei Ohtani hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the bottom of the first after giving up a leadoff homer to fellow All-Star Byron Buxton, helping the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Minnesota Twins 5-2 on Monday night. The NL West leaders snapped a six-game skid at home, their longest such streak at Dodger Stadium since September 2017. They were swept in three games by the Milwaukee Brewers over the weekend. Buxton sent Ohtani's second pitch of the game halfway up the left field pavilion. After Mookie Betts walked, Ohtani answered with a 441-foot blast to center that put the Dodgers in front, 2-1. The two-way Japanese superstar has homered in three straight games. Smith went deep twice off David Festa (3-4). Smith led off the fourth with a two-strike homer to center and followed with a 435-foot shot to left that made it 4-1. Andy Pages added a solo shot off reliever Cole Sands. Dustin May (6-6) took over from Ohtani, who allowed one run, four hits and struck out three in three innings. May gave up five hits in 4 2/3 innings, struck out four and walked three. Kirby Yates earned his third save. Freddie Freeman was in the lineup a day after being hit by a pitch on his left wrist in Sunday's 6-5 loss to Milwaukee. He was 1 for 4 with a strikeout. Minnesota shortstop Carlos Correa went 0 for 5, getting booed heavily in every at-bat by Dodgers fans still angry about the 2017 World Series, when Correa played for Houston. He was robbed of a potential game-tying homer by James Outman at the center field wall in the ninth. Ohtani is the first pitcher to give up a homer and hit a homer in the first inning of the same game since Philadelphia's Randy Lerch in a 23-22 win over the Chicago Cubs on May 17, 1979. Twins RHP Simeon Woods Richardson (5-4, 3.95 ERA) starts Tuesday against Dodgers RHP Yoshinobu Yamamoto (8-7, 2.59). © Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. $2m Lyttelton sport ground upgrade almost finished
The new basketball-futsal court and artificial turf training ground are open. Photo: CCC A major revamp of the Lyttelton Recreation Grounds is almost finished. The $2 million project involved building a new pavilion, upgrading the grass sports fields, creating new sports courts and an artificial turf training ground. Christchurch City Council head of parks Rupert Bool said the new features have opened up in stages. "The new change pavilion opened in April, along with the new basketball-futsal court and artificial turf training ground. The rugby and football fields are both up and running," Bool said. "We have painted some temporary line markings on the netball court so it can be used this season. The final artwork will be added later in the year, when the weather allows." Bool said minor landscaping and civil works will continue into spring and plans are in the works for an official opening event later in the year. "We've had some fantastic support from the local sports clubs and community throughout the project, and it will be great to mark the occasion together." Photo: CCC The Lyttelton Recreation Grounds project ran in parallel with the $27 million Naval Point – Te Nukutai o Tapoa Development Project. "Plans are in the works for the next phase of the Naval Point project. "We're working on an updated design for the marine and waterside facilities, which includes the public ramp and hand launch ramp,' says Bool. An information session is being held on July 29 at 6pm at the Naval Point Club to update the community and stakeholder groups on the next phase. Whakaraupō Recreation Inc will present its plans for shared facilities, storage and space for 18 different sport and recreation clubs based at Naval Point.

Plans for Iveagh Gardens in Crumlin to be part of new architectural conservation area
The lands take in a 136-home housing estate and several sports pitches in the northern part of Crumlin. A report, authored by DCC deputy city planner Malachy Bradley, said the area had a 'distinct and unique character' defined by its philanthropic origins and distinctive architectural design. This part of Crumlin, Mr Bradley notes, is characterised by Dublin Corporation developments built between 1935 and 1945, but the Iveagh Gardens estate stands apart from these due to its building materials and design features. 'The Iveagh Gardens is easily identifiable with handsome brick-built houses having distinctive green natural slate roofs,' he wrote. However, councillors in the DCC South East Area Committee questioned the inclusion of the sports facilities in the conservation area. 'I'd like somebody to tell me why we think a sports ground should from part of the ACA,' Independents 4 Change councillor Pat Dunne said. 'While I get the old pavilion that's there, the major development in the Iveagh grounds is the clubhouse. 'It certainly isn't an architectural gem by any means, and was probably built in the 1970s or thereabouts. So, I question as to why we should include those grounds.' Fine Gael Councillor Patrick Kinsella said he was also worried that the inclusion of sports facilities in the ACA could mean the council finding itself in the situation down the road of inhibiting future sports developments. Oisin Kelly, of the DCC conservation department, told councillors that the sporting facilities had many unique details like kerbs and fencing that warranted their inclusion in the ACA. ADVERTISEMENT Learn more Iveagh Garden's creation arose out of a decision in 1925 by the then Guinness Trust to build a 'suburban cottage' scheme, influenced by the 'garden suburb' model in Britain at the time. Their proximity to key workplaces meant they could be made up of entirely residential units, with generous high-quality landscaping and tree-lined routes and vistas. 'Iveagh Gardens housing estate is a rare example of an intact early 20th century philanthropic housing initiative, its development integral to the architectural evolution of suburban Dublin,' DCC's report reads. A 14-week public consultation period for the new conservation area will begin in September. Funded by the Local Democracy Reporting Scheme
