Olympic star McColgan coaching Hong Kong runner to new heights

Four-time Olympian and multiple British track champion Eilish McColgan has helped a Hong Kong runner achieve a string of personal bests – by coaching her via WhatsApp. McColgan and fiancé Michael Rimmer, a two-time Olympian, launched their online coaching business about a decade ago, after being 'inundated with people from around the world asking how to get faster'. During a visit to Hong Kong this month, the pair met Phoebe Tsoi Yun-yue, who clocked a personal best of three hours, 10 minutes and 19 seconds in this year's Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon, after following their guidance for two years. This season, Tsoi recorded a 1:27:34 half-marathon, and ended a long-standing quest to break 40 minutes over 10km, running 39:46. She said working with McColgan had 'made all the difference'. McColgan, who is targeting a fifth Olympics in 2028, after switching from track to road, said: 'Phoebe has a full-time job and child, and the majority of our runners are club level … they are people with other responsibilities. 'There are lots of moving parts, so we create a bespoke plan for every individual.'

Silver medal for Luke at Leinster/Connacht Championships

Enniskillen swimmer Luke Lannon impressed at the Leinster/Connacht Regional Championships in Dublin last weekend, returning home with a silver medal and a series of personal bests that have earned his place at the Irish Youth and Senior Summer Nationals. 14-year-old Luke, a student at St Michael's College and a member of Longford Swim Club, is aged up to compete in the 15/16-year-old category, took on a demanding race schedule over three days at the National Aquatic Centre. The highlight for Luke was the 1500m freestyle, where he swam with control and determination to secure a well-deserved silver medal in one of the most gruelling events of the meet. In the 400m freestyle, Luke knocked almost two seconds off his personal best to post a time of 4:51.40, finishing second in his heat and ranking as the third-fastest 15-year-old overall, which also secured his fourth qualifying time for the Irish Summer Nationals. Luke continued his strong form with a 5th-place finish in both the 400m Individual Medley and the 200m Backstroke, and rounded out the weekend with an 8th-place finish in the 200m Individual Medley, setting another personal best of 2:39.50, a five-second improvement on his entry time. He now prepares to represent Longford Swim Club once again in mid and long-distance events at the summer national championships.

I became a marathon runner in my 50s — here are the 7 things I learnt

My lips desert dry, a steady trickle of sweat running into my left eye and my right hip feeling decidedly stiff, I still punched the air with both fists as I crossed the finish line at the Brighton Marathon this month. I was disappointed that my time was a tiny bit over five hours — I'd been hoping to achieve a new personal best and come in between 4hr 30min and 4hr 45min — but I knew my next chance to do so was coming soon. Tomorrow I have a place in the TCS London Marathon and, with that, another shot at breaking my personal record. Not that any of my times date back very far — until a few years ago the furthest I'd

Nobull's Allday Ripstop shoes on sale for a limited time

Finding reliable trainers that you can wear for a variety of workouts has become increasingly difficult. It seems like many of us are schlepping a pair of lifters and running shoes to the gym. What if we told you the brand Nobull made a cross-trainer that could do it all? Its Allday Ripstop can be worn on the treadmill or an outdoor trail and is now seeing a rare discount through May 13. If you're not seeing mom on Mother's Day, consider snagging her a pair while the discount is live; if not, you can get to Father's Day gifting early and order these before his big day in June. While most colors are $99 with code ALLDAYRSS99, some discontinued colors and prints are marked down even further on the brand's site. Nobull Men's Allday Ripstop The upper part of these shoes is crafted from a durable polyester that can handle outdoor elements, scrapes on machines and the like. Its rubber sole makes moving on a variety of surfaces a breeze and keeps feet comfortable during tons of workouts. Nobull Women's Allday Ripstop Soft yet dense cushioning on this midsole will help keep you supported when getting your daily steps in or achieving a new personal best lift. The insole can mold to your foot over time for a hugged feel that means better control when moving. Many avid lifters, professional athletes, CrossFitters and fitness enthusiasts who prioritize high-quality gear wear Nobull's shoes and even apparel. The Allday Ripstop sneakers stand out because, instead of a lifter or running sneaker, which have singular uses, these cross trainers can be worn indoors and outdoors for different workouts. They're also great for folks who want a supportive shoe that can be worn for general types of movement like walking, running errands and even spending time with your kids on the playground. Over the past few years, Nobulls have been worn by service workers who are often on their feet and nurses or social workers in hospitals, for their grippy soles and almost indestructible ripstop upper. Any time I see someone wearing a pair, they even talk about how they're the most comfortable shoes ever. When I say Nobull rarely has sales, I mean it. Customers used to complain that the brand never offered discounts, even during major shopping holidays like Black Friday and Christmas. Since then, Nobull has had discounts here and there, but it still seems to be on a once-in-a-blue-moon basis, which is why we recommend jumping on these deals. The Underscored deals team has over a decade of combined commerce journalism experience. Rikka Altland, Jacqueline Saguin and Elena Matarazzo source the deals for the day each morning to curate one-offs and retailer-specific roundups of the best sales to shop. Searching everything from coveted tech essentials to deals on sneakers, the team works across a wide variety of categories to ensure they're finding the best buys for our readers.
