Two homers aside, Gausman sharp but outduelled by red-hot Cubs rookie

Hits and runs were sparse on Wednesday night at the Rogers Centre, in what turned out to be a very good game between the Blue Jays and the visiting Chicago Cubs. Article content Kevin Gausman and rookie Cade Horton engaged in a taut pitchers duel that the Cubs would prevail in, 4-1, counter-punching after the Jays took the series opener of this highly anticipated three-game set on Tuesday. Article content Article content The Jays' bats were silenced by Horton and failed to manufacture any threat. When only two hits are produced, while an opponent hits two solo homers, the margin gets pretty thin. Article content In their final at-bats, against Cubs closer Daniel Palencia, the Jays went quietly into the night, deserving of their fate as their record dropped to 70-51. Article content The following are three takeaways on a night when the Jays outdrew their season-high attendance from Tuesday night by attracting 43,120, witnessed an ugly injury when Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya tumbled over first base and was carted off the field; and maintained their 4.5-game lead in the AL East as the second-place Red Sox also lost. Article content TWO MISTAKES COSTLY Article content There wasn't much to find fault with in Gausman's performance as he provided his team with a quality outing — seven complete innings of three-hit ball. Article content The only problem was that two of those three hits left the yard as Michael Busch and Matt Shaw tagged him for solo home runs in the third and fifth innings, respectively. He also managed just three strikeouts. Article content Article content The one thing about Gausman is he will battle and his outing against the Cubs was no exception. He pitched into the seventh inning in a 2-1 game and looked as locked in as he did in the first. Article content First time through the order and Horton was well-deserving of an A-plus rating. Article content He entered the night having pitched a Cubs rookie record 23.2 scoreless innings, a stretch in which he surrendered just 10 hits. Article content In facing the order for the first time, Horton struck out five, while inducing four groundouts as his compact windup and delivery may have been difficult to pick up at first view. Article content The Jays finally had their first base-runner when Horton walked Bichette with one out in the fourth inning. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. then tagged him for a long fly ball to left that was caught at the warning track. Horton then struck out Addison Barger for the third out. Article content Horton's no-hit bid ended on an 0-2 count in the sixth inning when Andres Gimenez sent a ball up the middle for a one-out single.

George Kirby, M's edge Orioles 1-0 for 8th straight win

August 13 - Seattle's George Kirby held the host Baltimore Orioles to three hits in seven innings and the Mariners won 1-0 for their eighth consecutive victory in a classic pitchers' duel Tuesday night. Kirby (8-5) struck out seven without a walk, facing just two batters over the minimum during his stint. He has won four straight starts and he now has at least eight wins in each of his four major league seasons. Relievers Eduard Bazardo, Gabe Speier and Andres Munoz completed the five-hitter. Munoz secured his 28th save despite issuing a two-out walk to Gunnar Henderson in the ninth and then a single by Adley Rutschman. Ryan Mountcastle grounded out to end the game. Baltimore's Dean Kremer (8-9) was the hard-luck loser after tossing eight innings of one-run ball. He allowed five hits and one walk while striking out six. Rico Garcia pitched a scoreless ninth. A first-inning run held up as the Mariners won for the 10th time in 11 games. Randy Arozarena opened the game with a single and stole second base with one out. Josh Naylor delivered a two-out single to drive in the game's lone run. Baltimore, which took its third loss in a row, stranded five runners on base, two more than the Mariners. The Orioles have been shutout victims three times this month, including a 1-0 decision to the Cubs in Chicago on Aug. 1. Kirby cruised for three innings with the exception of Dylan Carlson's one-out infield single in the third inning. Greg Allen, the next batter, grounded into a double play. Henderson hit a two-out double in the fourth for the game's only extra-base hit. Baltimore's Ryan Noda singled with one out in the eighth, but Bazardo struck out Carlson, and Speier got pinch hitter Jeremiah Jackson to line out to center field. No player in the game had more than one hit. Baltimore has a total of 17 hits in its past four games. --Field Level Media

Dodgers let strong start from Tyler Glasnow go to waste in loss to Cardinals

The Dodgers' Tyler Glasnow and the Cardinals' Sonny Gray squared off in an old-school pitchers' duel Monday. But both were watching from the clubhouse when pinch-hitter Yohel Pozo's two-out single in the ninth lifted the Cardinals to a 3-2 victory at Dodger Stadium. Glasnow gave the Dodgers seven strong innings for the second time in three starts, allowing a run on three hits — none after the second inning — while striking out seven. Gray was even better in his seven innings, giving up just a fourth-inning solo home run to Freddie Freeman and a second-inning walk to Max Muncy. Both then gave way to shaky bullpens, which is when things got interesting. Read more: 'They've got to perform better.' Three Dodger stars who need to heat up at the plate The Dodgers' bullpen gave up more runs over a span of nine batters than Glasnow did all night. Anthony Banda went first, allowing a go-ahead homer to Iván Herrera three batters into the eighth inning. But the Cardinals' Riley O'Brien gave the run right back in the bottom of the inning on a double to Teoscar Hernández. Newcomer Brock Stewart started the ninth for the Dodgers, but he didn't finish it. After Willson Contreras and Lars Nootbaar greeted him with singles to put runners at the corners, Pozo squirted a two-out single over the infield to score pinch-runner Garrett Hampson for the go-ahead run. After Shohei Ohtani's led off the ninth with a single, the Cardinals' JoJo Romero finally shut the door, getting Mookie Betts to pop out and striking out Freeman. After walking Will Smith to put the tying run at second, he retired Muncy on a line drive to right to end the night. Read more: Dodgers manufacture enough offense to slip past Tampa Bay Rays Glasnow got off to a rough start, allowing three hits, including a solo homer by Masyn Winn, in the first two innings. But he settled in after that, allowing just one baserunner the rest of the way, though he would have nothing to show for it, finishing without a decision for the eighth time in 10 starts. Gray, meanwhile, was dealing from the start for the Cardinals, setting down 10 of the first 11 batters he faced before Freeman tied the game with a one-out home run, his 13th of the season, in the fourth. Freeman has hits in 12 of his last 13 games and is batting .500 over his last six games. But his home run would prove to be the only hit the Dodgers would get off Gray, who struck out eight and walked just one. Sasaki set to throw Right-hander Roki Sasaki is expected to throw the equivalent of three innings to hitters Friday and if that goes well, he could begin a minor-league rehab assignment next week. He has not pitched in nearly three months after going on the IL with a shoulder impingement. Edman goes on injured list Utilityman Hyeseong Kim, out since July 29 with a shoulder issue, is swinging a bat and taking grounders. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is optimistic he will be able to return soon. But another utility player, Tommy Edman, went on the IL with an ankle injury. With Kim, Edman and Kiké Hernández, another utility player, all out with injuries, Roberts has not had the usual versatility he has enjoyed in fielding a lineup. Janson Junk outduels former Marlin Trevor Rogers as Miami beats Orioles 6-0

BALTIMORE — Janson Junk allowed five hits over seven innings to prevail in a pitcher's duel with former Marlins standout Trevor Rogers, Derek Hill drove in two runs and Xavier Edwards homered to help Miami beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-0 on Saturday. Dane Myers had two hits and scored a run for the Marlins, who cranked up their offense in the latter innings after being held to one single by Rogers through the sixth. Junk (4-1) walked none and struck out two in the longest outing of his career. The right-hander had only two perfect innings, but repeatedly came up with the right pitch when it mattered. Rogers (2-1) was facing his former team for the first time since being traded last July for Kyle Stowers and Connor Norby. The lefty was lifted with two outs in the seventh of a scoreless game after allowing a single to Myers. Gregory Soto promptly hit Stowers with a pitch and Hill followed with an RBI single. Miami padded the margin with a run in the eighth and pulled away with a four-run ninth, capped by Edwards' two-run drive off Scott Blewett. Rogers gave up two hits — both to Myers — and notched a season-high eight strikeouts. Stowers denied Baltimore's bid to jump on top in the first inning, throwing out Gunnar Henderson at the plate from right field on a two-out single by Ryan O'Hearn. The Orioles didn't get another runner in scoring position until the sixth. The departure of Rogers opened the door for Miami to crank up its offense against Baltimore's poor bullpen. Baltimore extended its streak of drawing a walk to a franchise-record 172 consecutive games when O'Hearn drew a base on balls leading off the ninth. Orioles rookie Brandon Young (0-3, 6.14 ERA) seeks his first big league victory Sunday in a matchup against the Marlins and 22-year-old Eury Pérez (2-2, 4.00). ___ AP MLB:
