College football star accused of the ultimate betrayal
The Memphis Tigers appear to have fallen victim to a mole after one of their players was accused of leaking the team's playbook to a rival quarterback. Safety Tahj Ra-El is alleged to have sent pictures and details of the Tigers' playbook to UTSA star Owen McCown before the two teams faced off in November 2024. Memphis went on to lose the game 44-36. McCown is the son of Josh McCown, the former NFL quarterback who is now the quarterback coach for Minnesota Vikings, a role he has held since 2024. By the time of the game, Ra-El had transferred to Purdue. He is said to have left Memphis last October - after being dismissed from the team - but screenshots of his alleged messages to McCown only emerged this week on On3 Sports. 'Here you go... that's all the signals,' the messages read, alongside a photo of a team's playbook. In the exchange, the sender - believed to be Ra-El - also criticizes his teammates and provides further details on their tactics. 'None of the safeties can cover btw (by the way),' a message reads. 'The feild (sic) safety is the weakest link in the defense his hamstring (is) hurting but he's running out of eligibility so when you play him he number 0.' It's claimed the message was referring to Memphis star Kourtlan Marsh, who started ahead of Ra-El. Ra-El, a defensive back from Charlotte, North Carolina, spent three seasons with the Old Dominion Monarchs before moving to Memphis. But he played just four games for the Tigers, making one interception before leaving for Purdue. In a statement to On3 Sports, Purdue Athletics said: 'Our coaching staff sees the scenario as being mischaracterized and does not have any concerns moving forward.'

Purdue calls leaked playbook allegation against ex-Memphis player 'mischaracterized'
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — The Purdue Boilermakers believe the alleged leaking of a playbook from defensive back Tahj Ra-El, a former Memphis player, to UTSA quarterback Owen McCown has been 'mischaracterized.' Ra-El left Memphis in the middle of last season and has since transferred to Purdue where coach Barry Odom is in his first season. 'Our coaching staff sees this scenario as being mischaracterized and does not have any concerns moving forward,' the athletic department said in a statement given to The Associated Press on Friday. The controversy erupted last week when On3 published screenshots of an alleged conversation between the former high school teammates from Charlotte, North Carolina. 'Far left is coverages. i'll send you better list showing you the call,' the screenshot showed Ra-El wrote. 'But they run qtrs none of they safeties can cover btw (sic).' Ra-El also reportedly told McCown that starting safety Kourtlan Marsh had an injured hamstring. Marsh didn't play in the game, which UTSA won 44-36 after scoring 30 consecutive points to erase a 24-14 halftime deficit. During the American Conference media days, UTSA coach Jeff Traylor said the information had 'no bearing whatsoever' on the outcome of that game even though he said he had not heard about the allegations until last week. 'The stuff he sent him didn't make any sense, so he didn't tell me,' Traylor said. 'He was just being nice to his buddy. It got blown out of context in my opinion.' McCown threw for 3,424 yards and 25 touchdowns with 10 interceptions in 13 games last season, his first as the Roadrunners starter. They finished 7-6 and beat Coastal Carolina in the Myrtle Beach Bowl. Memphis coach Ryan Silverfield reportedly said he and Traylor were seated across from each other during a media day event and they decided it was best to move on from the controversy. ___ AP college football:

UTSA coach denies QB receiving Memphis' playbook information impacted game
CHARLOTTE — UTSA coach Jeff Traylor said his quarterback receiving leaked playbook information from a former Memphis player 'had no bearing whatsoever' on the outcome of the teams' game last year. The Roadrunners beat Memphis 44-36 in November, scoring 30 consecutive points at one point after trailing 24-14 in the first half. Last week, reports surfaced that former Memphis player Tahj Ra-El sent elements of the Tigers' playbook to UTSA ahead of the game after leaving the team in October. Advertisement Thursday, On3 posted screenshots of a conversation between Ra-El and UTSA starting quarterback Owen McCown. The screenshots showed a photo of Memphis' signals. 'Far left is coverages. i'll send you better list showing you the call,' Ra-El wrote. 'But they run qtrs none of they safeties can cover btw (sic).' Ra-El also told McCown that starting safety Kourtlan Marsh had an injured hamstring. Marsh didn't play in the game against UTSA. Traylor said he spends each day with McCown and the Roadrunners' quarterbacks, but the first time he heard of the playbook information was when the story surfaced earlier this month. 'The stuff he sent him didn't make any sense, so he didn't tell me,' Traylor said. 'He was just being nice to his buddy. It got blown out of context in my opinion.' McCown and Ra-El were teammates early in McCown's high school career at Myers Park High School in Charlotte. 'I think a lot of it has been sensationalized and some of it quite frankly is clickbait,' American commissioner Tim Pernetti said Friday. At a Texas High School Coaches event in San Antonio last week, Traylor called early reports that he had Memphis' playbook 'asinine.' He said Friday he stood behind those comments. 'Owen's a great kid. He was just being nice to his buddy. It got blown out of context in my opinion,' Traylor said, adding that integrity is one of the program's pillars and no one has exemplified that more than the McCown family, who Traylor has known since the 1990s. Memphis coach Ryan Silverfield said the two were seated across from each other at a dinner Thursday for American coaches. They spoke about the issue earlier this week, Silverfield said. 'We have respect for each other and agreed it's in (our) best interest, regardless of what happened, to move on,' Silverfield said.
