New hybrid EV by China's Geely, Mercedes offers 1,000-mile range with lithium battery

Smart, a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and China's Geely, has introduced the new Electric Hybrid Drive (EHD) version of its SUV, called Smart #5, with about 155 miles of pure electric range and nearly 1,000 miles total range. The Smart #5 EHD offers an estimated real-world range of about 250 miles (375 miles WLTP) and can recharge in under 15 minutes. Currently, the SUV is only available as a battery electric vehicle in five trims. Rear-wheel-drive options offer either 335 or 358 horsepower with 76 or 100 kWh batteries, delivering up to 354 or 460 miles of range. The all-wheel-drive version adds a 221-horsepower front motor, paired with a 100 kWh battery, giving it an estimated range of 361 miles or 360 miles depending on configuration. SUV pairs turbo engine with CATL battery Smart's new plug-in hybrid SUV uses a 1.5-liter turbo engine producing 161 horsepower, paired with a lithium iron phosphate battery from CATL. While full battery specs have not been confirmed yet, Smart says the vehicle has over 40 kWh capacity and achieves fuel efficiency of about 53 miles per gallon. The gasoline engine functions primarily as a generator, extending the vehicle's total driving range to 995 miles according to the Chinese standard, which likely corresponds to about 620 miles in real-world conditions. Even as a plug-in hybrid, the Smart #5 EHD drives its wheels fully on electric power, but its drivetrain is completely different from the all-electric version. A roof-mounted LiDAR sensor hints at the SUV's advanced driver-assistance features, likely enabling functions such as lane centering, adaptive cruise control, and enhanced safety systems. 2024 sales in China decline nearly 20% In 2024, Smart sold a total of 33,427 vehicles in the Chinese market, representing a year-over-year decline of 19.37%. The sales figure fell short of the company's annual target of 50,000 units, highlighting challenges Smart faces in gaining traction in one of the world's largest EV markets. However, despite the setback, the Chinese-German brand continues to invest in new models and technologies to regain momentum and meet future demand. According to the most recent sales data available from March this year, Smart #1 led the lineup with 1,659 units sold. It was followed by the Smart #3, which recorded sales of 568 units, while the Smart #5 saw 344 units being sold during the same period. Germany and the broader European market have emerged as significant buyers of the Smart #5 SUV, a trend that is already evident in the brand's recent sales data. With the Smart #5 having only recently launched across key European countries, these early sales figures are expected to convert into a steady increase in vehicle registrations over the coming months, reflecting a growing interest in compact SUVs. 2025 Mazda CX-90 Hybrid Review: Expert Insights, Pricing, and Trims

Blending premium design with Mazda's signature sporty driving dynamics, the 2026 Mazda CX-90 PHEV is the plug-in hybrid version of the automaker's three-row SUV. It offers electric-only driving for short trips, a refined cabin, and advanced tech, making it a stylish and practical choice for families. The CX-90 PHEV doesn't have any direct mainstream plug-in competition, but standard hybrid rivals include the Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid, Toyota Highlander Hybrid, and Kia Sorento Hybrid. What's New New for 2024, updates for this year's CX-90 PHEV consist of: Expanded standard tech including a larger infotainment screen A Premium Sport trim level, which replaces the Premium model What We Think The Mazda CX-90 PHEV stands out with bold styling and a rewarding driving experience. It doesn't quite check every box for three-row SUV shoppers, however. True to Mazda's reputation, the CX-90 excels at delivering a sporty, engaging ride. The powertrain is strong enough, though the transmission can feel unpolished at lower speeds. Ride quality is generally composed, but larger bumps can unsettle its otherwise firm and controlled demeanor. Inside, the cabin is impressively upscale, with the same high-quality materials as the gas-only model. Space in the second and third rows—particularly rear legroom—and overall cargo capacity fall short for a vehicle aimed at families, however. Access to the third row could also be more convenient. In daily use, the infotainment system remains a sticking point. The console-mounted dial is cumbersome, and although the touchscreen works well with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, it's frustrating that Mazda limits its functionality to those platforms rather than enabling it universally. The CX-90 PHEV has clear strengths, especially in driving dynamics and design, but standard hybrid rivals from Hyundai and Toyota offer more space and lower prices. That makes the Mazda a tougher sell in this subset of the segment. Top-Ranked Competitors: MotorTrend Tested All 2025 CX-90 PHEV are equipped with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, electric motor, and battery pack. Mazda pegs system output at 323 hp and 369 lb-ft torque. In MotorTrend testing, the plug-in hybrid can accelerate to 60 mph in a decent 6.2 seconds. The CX-90 PHEV is the only plug-in hybrid model in the class of traditional hybrid three-row SUVs. In terms of engine displacement, the closest competitor is the Toyota Highlander Hybrid, which utilizes a 2.5-liter inline-four and two electric motors to develop a total of 243 hp. This much less powerful SUV took a considerably slower 8.4 seconds to sprint to 60 mph in MT testing. MPGs and Range With a combined fuel economy rating of 56 mpg-e, the 2026 Mazda CX-90 PHEV can travel as far as 490 miles with a full tank and a fully charged battery. That includes 26 miles of all-electric driving range. Standard hybrid rivals can't claim any all-electric driving range. The Toyota Highlander Hybrid does return strong combined fuel economy, though, with 35 mpg. It can also travel some 598 miles on a full tank. Safety Ratings and Features The CX-90 PHEV is an IIHS 2025 Top Safety Pick+. It also earns NHTSA's top award, a five-star overall safety rating. Standard driver assists consist of: Automatic emergency braking Blind-spot monitoring Rear cross-traffic alert Lane keeping Adaptive cruise control Driver attention monitor Front and rear parking sensors Cargo Space and Interior Room Both gas and PHEV versions of the CX-90 provide the same space. Third-row legroom and standard cargo capacity compare favorably to the Toyota Highlander Hybrid and Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid. Generally, rivals are more spacious. Technology Infotainment The 2025 CX-90 PHEV features a new larger 12.3-inch central display that becomes a touchscreen when wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is used. A 12.3-inch driver screen is also included, as are two USB-C ports per row, for a total of six. A wireless phone charger becomes standard this year for all PHEV models. Sound System Eight speakers are standard with the base system. Mazda also offers a 12-speaker Bose upgrade on higher CX-90 PHEV trims. Available Upgrades Premium cabin features include a head-up display, second-row captain's chairs, ventilated front seats, and heated steering wheel and rear seats. A hands-free power liftgate is also on offer. Value Standard Features Every CX-90 PHEV scores a strong powertrain that also provides some electric-only driving range (provided you remember to plug in regularly). Family-friendly features include solid tech and a third row of seats. Recommended Trim The entry-level CX-90 PHEV preferred is right up our alley for its mix of performance, efficiency, and technology, especially with this year's upgrades. It comes with better-riding 19-inch wheels, too.

Ford Bronco Lineup Adds EV and Plug-In Hybrid Models in China

Ford is launching a new model in China called the Bronco New Energy that comes either as an electric model or as a plug-in hybrid. The electric version has a 105-kWh battery pack, while the PHEV combines a 44-kWh battery with a gasoline engine. It's closer to the Bronco Sport in looks, but the Bronco New Energy has a full-size spare tire on the rear like the big Bronco. Ford hasn't introduced any type of electric or hybrid powertrain to its U.S. Bronco SUV lineup yet, but it could happen sooner rather than later if this new model for China is any indication. Called the Bronco New Energy, this new Bronco model comes either with a battery-electric setup or as a plug-in hybrid with a range-extender gasoline engine. Ford The Bronco New Energy appears to be closer in spirit to the unibody Bronco Sport crossover than it is to the body-on-frame Bronco, as it's a boxy four-door SUV with similar styling rather than a two- or four-door convertible with a removable roof. But it does adopt the big Bronco's hatch-mounted spare tire and looks to have decent ground clearance and chunky all-terrain tires. The electric version comes with a 105-kWh battery pack and claims to go 403 miles on a charge, but that's likely on the more generous WLTP metric. The plug-in hybrid version has a big battery pack for a PHEV, at 44 kWh, and claims to have a 136-mile EV range and an 800-mile range on a full tank of fuel and a full battery. Its powertrain is described as a range-extender setup, meaning the gasoline engine likely acts as a generator rather than driving the wheels. We don't have detailed specs yet on either of the powertrains, so we don't know power output, but we assume that the Bronco New Energy offers all-wheel drive. One of the images also shows a Badlands badge, a trim level that brings extra off-road equipment on Bronco and Bronco Sport models. Ford We expect Ford will release more information on the Bronco New Energy, including interior photos and more detailed specs. It's slated to go on sale in China later this year; as for U.S. availability, we haven't heard any concrete information, but a hybrid was long promised to be part of the Bronco lineup in America, so it could be that a version of this new model could come here eventually. The Little Volvo With Enough Mojo for a Turbulent EV Market

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here to bid farewell to the federal tax credit for plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles. It was born in California and adopted nationwide in 2008 when it was signed into law by former Texas oilman and radical communist George W. Bush. And now, snatched untimely from our midst by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA)—well, not 'now,' exactly. The credit is in effect until Sept. 30. Until then it will apply to a wide range of deeply discounted new and used EVs and PHEV models, for sale or lease. For the next 12 weeks the market for pluggables will be a veritable Filene's Basement of cut- rate mobility.
