Thousands of Dollars Worth of Labubus Stolen From California Store

Thieves broke into a California store and stole thousands of dollars worth of Labubus — the trendy Chinese plushies and this generation's version of Cabbage Patch dolls — on Wednesday, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office. Footage released by the store, Onestopsaless, on Instagram shows a group of thieves quickly swiping boxes and dolls off shelves. They then enter the back of the store and grab armfuls of merchandise. Labubus are fuzzy Nordic elves — all female — who sometimes come with outfits. They're made exclusively by Pop Mart, a Chinese company. The toys are so popular that people line up for hours at stores for the chance to buy one. Shoppers often don't know which Labubu they're getting because some of them come in a 'blind box,' meaning their identity is unknown until the box is opened. There are more than 300 versions of the toys, with each doll costing roughly $30, though some limited-edition versions fetch more. The website for Onestopsaless shows Labubus sell for as much as $500. The dolls have spawned communities — in real life and online — where fans share tips about how to dress the figures. The demand has also driven a market for knockoffs, called Lafufus. Celebrities, including Rihanna and Cher, have sported them on their handbags. The dolls, which also come in key chains, have been featured hanging off designer bags, such as a Hermes Birkin. Joanna Avendano and Leonardo Rodriguez opened Onestopsaless, which sells trending collectibles and accessories, such as Powerpuff Girls and Hello Kitty merchandise, a few months ago, Ms. Avendano said. The store also stocks products from MINISO, a Chinese retailer that sells licensed collections from brands such as Disney and Pokemon, toys, plushies and other products. The thieves drove a stolen Toyota Tacoma to the store on Glendora Avenue in La Puente, Cali., around 1:30 a.m., according to a news release from the sheriff's office. When the police first responded, Ms. Avendano said she was unable to go into the store and initially estimated the loss to be about $7,000. Later, after she managed to take an inventory, she revised that estimate to $25,000. A detective for the sheriff's office confirmed she provided a list. Investigators on Thursday returned about $4,000 worth of the stolen goods, which included some Labubus and other merchandise, Ms. Avendano said. It was not immediately clear how the stolen goods were recovered.

Changi Airport launches Jellycat-inspired plushies of local food like chicken rice and kopi

All these years there's been a never-ending battle over whether Singapore or Malaysia has better food. People also can't seem to come to an agreement on which country certain dishes belong to. Apparently this competition could extend to toys too. As part of SG60 celebrations, Changi Airport recently launched a new series of plushies shaped like Singaporean local delights. At the Mr Merlion Hawker Fest pop-up at Terminal 3, which is now open, you can find soft toys shaped like rainbow kueh lapis, curry puff, bak kwa, ice kachang, chicken rice, chilli crab, kopi, Magnolia milk and even popular childhood favourite, rainbow bread ice cream. The stuffies are all inspired by British toy brand Jellycat, and similarly have small dangling legs as well as two eyes paired with a cute smile. Yup, pretty much like the highly raved kaya toast and egg plushies Milo released in April this year. Just like how they do it in the official Jellycat stores around the world, the staff will also prepare the plushies like they are actual dishes before 'serving' them to you. We can already hear people squealing over how cute these toys are. Some netizens even gushed that they're willing to work for the store just because the job seems "so fun". However, there were skeptics too. "Isn't this Malaysian food?" questioned one netizen. Sorry but we think we can safely answer... No! These are Singaporean food, please. At least the chicken rice and Magnolia milk definitely are.

Japanese hotel offers toys their own beds, but it will cost you

A Japanese hotel is offering travellers tiny beds and pyjamas to tuck in their stuffed toy roommates. The teddy bear beds are currently being trialled at the Toyoko Inn Osaka Dome Mae for an additional fee of 300 yen (£1.50). Nuikatsu or 'living with stuffed toys ' is a social media trend that sees people travel to events with their nuigurumi plush toys. A hotel representative for Toyoko Inn told J-Cast News he hoped the service would be popular with Gen Z travellers, reported The Times. According to the Toyoko Inn website, the sleepover plan includes 'a special overnight set for your Oshi merch — like plushies or acrylic stands — complete with a mini bed and tiny bathrobe'. Travellers are also encouraged to post a photo or video of their stay on TikTok, X, or Instagram with the hashtag #推し活なら東横イン (Toyoko Inn is the place to go for your favourite idols) to receive a small gift. The overnight set is available as a rental and has to be returned to the hotel on checkout. Recently, a Chinese hotel was ordered to end its unusual wake-up call service that involves red pandas climbing onto guests' beds after concerns for safety and animal rights. Lehe Ledu Liangjiang Holiday Hotel, a popular family resort in Chongqing, has been called on by the local forestry bureau to stop one of its most popular services. Many guests are attracted to the hotel solely for its red panda wake-up experience. The service involves bringing one of the hotel's red pandas up to a guest's bedroom in the morning, allowing the panda to roam freely around the room and climb onto the bed. Despite the popularity of the service, the Chongqing Forestry Bureau has reportedly asked the hotel to immediately cease all close contact activities between the pandas and visitors.

Grandmother, 95, hailed as a 'national treasure' for 'perfect' viral video about her collectable toys

A grandmother has become an unlikely online internet sensation after showcasing her adorable cuddly toys on TikTok - but admitted that she doesn't want her fame to last for long. Brenda Allen, who resides in a Majesticare Luxury Care Homes branch in Evesham, has been hailed a 'national treasure' after she went online to speak about her quirky, cuddly toys, with some people even going as far as to say they would 'die for Brenda and her Jellycats'. The soft plushies are available in an array of shapes, characters, and objects, from bunny rabbits to surf boards and are particularly popular with Gen Z and Millennial women who are splashing their cash to build up their collections. The 95-year-old was encouraged by one of the carers at the home to make a TikTok video, with the employee saying: 'This is my resident Brenda and she wants to show you her Jellycat collection and you better be nice!' And it wasn't long before Brenda was showing off her adorable stuffed avocado named Florence. The pensioner said: ''This is my avocado... this is the first one I've had and she has a knitted hat... she's got a pom pom hat so she's a little girl.' Her haul also included a green peas in a pod, two birds and a cute smiling pain au chocolat Jellycats. She added: 'Now anyone would think I've been to France because this is what they call a pain au chocolat, and that's French, and I learnt French at school, so I like him. He's got chocolate going all the way through him. By the end of the short clip, Brenda had mastered the art of comedic timing, joking that her mushroom toy was a 'very fun guy'. The TikTok amassed more than a whopping 2.4 million views on TikTok, with users from around the world hailing Brenda a 'legend', with some asking to see more clips of her speaking about the collectable toys. One wrote: 'French lady here. Very proud of sweet Brenda for pronouncing 'pain au chocolat' so perfectly. Lovely Jellycat collection as well!' Another penned: 'I bet Brenda was a teacher - she is giving teacher energy.' A third said: 'I'd die for Brenda and her jellycats.' A fourth commented: 'Brenda is a legend. She needs to record some bedtime stories. Her voice is so soothing.' Others were even tagging the official Jellycat account in the comments to try to ensure that Brenda was on their radar. And it worked, with Jellycat eventually responding: 'We absolutely loved watching your Jellycat collection Brenda! Thanks for being an amazing Jellyfriend.' John Lewis also chimed in and said: 'Protect Brenda at all costs. And her Jellycats.' The department store, Jellycat and kind strangers then surprised her with an array of new additions for her growing collection of stuffed toys. Brenda - who has had her videos re-posted by Love Island stars - unboxed a latte cup from John Lewis, to which she said: 'Isn't that lovely?' 'Overwhelmed' with the level of love and support on her videos, she also revealed that she's going to continue collecting the cuddly plushies with the plan of selling them to raise money for charity. When she received another parcel from the Jellycat team, she gasped as she unboxed a yellow sunflower toy, a blue bunny and a bumble bee. 'I want to take [the bunny] to bed,' Brenda said, before one of the carers responded: 'Well you can, you can sleep with him every night!' She also then received another package from a fan named Anna, who came across Brenda's video and wanted to spread some joy. She sent the grandmother a treasure chest with some stickers and wrote: 'Brenda, as you're our new national treasure on TikTok, I hope you enjoy adding this treasure chest to your collection, lots of love, Anna.' 'Thank you to all you lovely ladies who sent me some Jellycats following my little talk about them and now I've got a collection that people have sent and I am so grateful for it and I'm sure [I will put them] to a good cause.' Brenda said that she initially only had the avocado one for a long time but had racked up more and more gradually when she received them as gifts. It wasn't long after the first video was posted that the care home started getting people calling up wanting to send more Jellycats to Brenda. Speaking to the Guardian, Brenda said: 'One of the girls asked me to do a video. I didn't know what it was for, really. She just said would I do a little video for her about jelly cats? So I said yes, and it's gone from there. It's gone mad. I've had some lovely messages. Everyone thinks I have a nice voice, apparently.' However, while the care home resident appears to be flattered by her online stardom, she doesn't want her fame to continue for much longer. She added: 'I don't want to keep it on too long, I'm 95, you know.' Her daughter, Julie, said the family had been 'blown away' by her cult following, telling the outlet: 'We don't quite understand it, but it's amazing and it's lovely.' Brenda is now planning on using her internet stardom for good by auctioning off her Jellycat toys to donate the money to a local children's hospice.
