UN rejects parallel government in Sudan

The UN Security Council has rejected the announcement by Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF) regarding the formation of a parallel governing authority in territories under their control. Since April 2023, Sudan has been gripped by fierce fighting between the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), with both factions vying for control amid a stalled transition to civilian rule. 'The members of the Security Council unequivocally reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Sudan,' the UN's press service reported on Wednesday. The UN called on both sides 'to resume talks to reach a lasting ceasefire and create the necessary conditions for a political resolution on the conflict.' The statement noted Resolution 2736 (2024), which demands that the RSF lift its siege of El Fasher and calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities in and around the city, where famine and severe food insecurity are at risk of spreading rapidly. Wednesday's announcement comes after a Sudanese political bloc, allied with the RSF, declared a parallel government in July. The Sudan Founding Alliance named RSF chief General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo as chairman of a 15-member presidential council that includes regional governors. Last month, the African Union, Arab League, and Saudi Arabia also condemned the RSF for declaring a rival government. The African Union's Peace and Security Council warned the move could deepen Sudan's two-year civil war between the RSF and the national army, urging states and the international community not to recognize the parallel administration. The SAF has denounced the 'so-called militia government' as a ploy by the RSF to deceive its allies, while its true intent is to seize power for personal gain. The Arab League called the move a 'blatant challenge' to the Sudanese people's will and an attempt to impose a fait accompli by force, warning it posed a serious threat to regional stability.

Jordan, Syria and U.S. hold trilateral talks in Amman on Sweida ceasefire

ALBAWABA- Jordan, Syria, and the United States held a trilateral meeting in Amman on July 19 to discuss stabilizing the ceasefire in Sweida and advancing a political resolution to the Syrian crisis, according to official statements. Also Read King of Jordan meets Saudi Crown Prince in NEOM The talks brought together Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, and U.S. Special Envoy to Syria Tom Barrack. Bilateral discussions between Shibani and Safadi preceded the joint session. A Syrian Foreign Ministry statement said the working group agreed to support the Syrian government's efforts to strengthen the Sweida ceasefire, hold perpetrators accountable, and prepare for the return of displaced persons. It added that the meeting welcomed Syria's initiatives to restore stability in the province. The Jordanian Foreign Ministry described the gathering as an opportunity to discuss Syria's reconstruction on 'foundations that guarantee its security, stability, and sovereignty' and to ensure the rights and aspirations of the Syrian people are met. A Syrian government source told Arab TV that the meeting was strictly official, involving Jordanian and U.S. representatives but no Sweida-based figures. The talks also come amid tensions with armed groups in Sweida that reject integration with Syrian state institutions, most prominently the 'Military Council in Sweida,' which local actors accuse of having Israeli backing. This was the second meeting between Shibani, Safadi, and Barrack in under a month, following an earlier session in Amman in July.

China warns of ‘spillover of war' risk in Iran-Israel conflict

China urged Iran and Israel on Monday to de-escalate in order to prevent the 'spillover' of their war, as fighting between the two foes raged for the 11th day. 'The Chinese side urges the parties to the conflict to prevent the situation from escalating repeatedly, resolutely avoid the spillover of war, and return to the path of political resolution,' foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said. China said the international community must do more to prevent fighting between Iran and Israel from impacting the global economy, noting that the region and surrounding waters are important for international trade routes. 'China calls on the international community to make greater efforts to promote the de-escalation of the conflict and prevent regional instability from having a greater impact on global economic development,' Jiakun said.
