The best portable fans 2025: These handheld and neck fans will keep you cool in a heatwave

From living rooms and tube trains to Wimbledon and beyond, portable fans are the must-have gadget in a heatwave. Handheld and wearable neck fans are convenient standbys and some deliver cooling to rival the best fans overall. They're great for travel or commuting and some users even consider their mini fan a fashion accessory. Prices range from under £10 to £50 and higher, so there are models to suit most budgets. Household brands like M&S and Bush tend to supply affordable crowd-pleasers, while more advanced models are made by the less well-known likes of EasyAcc and JisuLife. I tested the most popular models to find out which offered the best performance and value for money. You can read my findings below, followed by the answers to the most frequently asked questions. But if you're in a hurry, here's a quick look at my top five. The best portable fans: At a glance How to choose a portable fan The first thing to consider is type. Most buyers opt for a handheld fan, made up of a fan head (usually bladed, but sometimes bladeless) and a handle containing a rechargeable battery. Many of these fans have a stand accessory or folding handle, so they can double up as a desk fan. Wearable neck fans are another option, providing unmatched portability and rapid, up-close cooling. If you don't mind carrying a larger fan, perhaps by car, then a cordless desk fan might be the best portable option, as this type usually has superior power and enough airflow to cool several people. You could even opt for a misting fan like the Shark FlexBreeze HydroGo, which doubles up as an excellent air cooler. Other factors to consider include a fan's selection of power settings, added features and versatility. How we test portable fans I'm a consumer journalist with over a decade's experience, so I know what to look for when trying out the latest gadgets. I tested the fans featured here by using them during a heatwave, both indoors and outside. Naturally, my first consideration was how well the fans cooled me down. Was the airflow strong enough, with good enough coverage, to provide a much-needed wind chill and evaporate sweat? Portability is clearly also crucial, so I assessed these fans' compactness, comfort and battery performance, all of which play their part on-the-go. Further criteria included quietness, ease of use and value for money based on the quality and price of each fan. Best Buy Handheld Fan: JisuLife Pro1S £55.99 Buy now Price at Amazon The JisuLife Pro1S is the pinnacle of handheld fan design and if you don't mind splashing some cash, then you couldn't choose better. It gives you fine control over the air speed via a thumb dial, with settings from one to 100 shown on the smartly integrated digital display. Even the lowest setting provides decent cooling up-close, and the airflow is strong from around 20 upwards. Beyond 50 it feels more like a (cold) hair dryer than your average handheld fan, and the maximum setting produces the sort of power I'd expect from the best tower fans. The battery performance is also exceptional. After around two hours of charging via a mains adapter, it worked for several days before losing power. A status indicator flashes when the charge level is low. There's even a toggle switch to prevent accidental activation during storage. The fan was easy to carry around during testing, with its soft case protecting the swanky aluminium plate finish. It's heavier than some competing models, but I took this as an assurance of quality rather than an inconvenience. One tiny criticism: the attachable wrist strap was a little narrow for me, which is saying something as my hands are average-sized. Key specifications 2. Best Value Handheld Fan: EasyAcc Handheld Mini Fan £14.99 Buy now Price at Amazon In terms of performance, this is the most impressive low-cost handheld fan I've tested, with cooling ranging from a gentle breeze to an invigorating blast. It's not the absolute cheapest, but superb value given the strong airflow and excellent runtimes of up to 17 hours on a single charge. It is a great pick for users who'd prefer not to make a racket. With the lower two speed settings (both of which provide good cooling), the sound is a soothing background hum. Only the fourth and highest setting is truly noisy. This model also feels light in the hand and the wrist strap accessory is a comfy way to keep track of the fan while lazing in the sun. The size is convenient for a backpack or glovebox. Its impressive power and runtime make it a genuine desk fan candidate, as well as a portable handheld for commuting or travel. The head folds back up to 180 degrees, so you have plenty of flexibility to direct the airflow wherever needed. This highly capable, stoutly built fan will be the best pick for buyers on a sensible budget. It's worth the £10 to 15 increase over an entry-level model. Key specifications Accessories: Charging cable (USB-C input to USB-A source), wrist strap Charging time: Three hours Features: Four speeds Power: 9.62 Watts Weight: 200g 3. Best Budget Handheld Fan: M&S Home Rechargeable Handheld Travel Fan This is not just a fan. It's a brilliantly priced, robustly made handheld fan from Marks & Spencer, designed for on-the-go cooling and long term use. It's a pretty small device that won't take up too much space in your bag (or on your desk, if you choose to fold the stand to rest it on a flat surface). I was pleased to note the rechargeable battery is replaceable. Just open the compartment with a screwdriver, swap in another and keep using this nifty little fan for years. Recharging took under three hours, and provided enough runtime to see me through the warmer part of the day. The lowest of the fan's three speed settings is a little weak, but the medium and high settings were adequate for personal cooling. There are certainly more powerful-feeling handheld fans out there and I wouldn't recommend this model to users who like a strong breeze. However, it possesses a rarer quality: quietness. I was able to use it while my wife made work calls, without fear of it being overheard. To my eye, this fan is decent-looking rather than a true head-turner. Still, it offers foolproof operation, sufficient power and great longevity at a bargain price. These have sold out quickly, but we anticipate a restock and will keep this page updated. You can also add it to a wish list to track availability. Key specifications Accessories: Charging cable (USB-C input to USB-A source) Charging time: Approx. three hours Features: Three speeds, adjustable neck (tilts from 0 to 120 degrees) Power: Five Watts Weight: 207g 4. Best Neck Fan: JisuLife Neck Fan Life3 FA14 If you want to cool yourself down quickly, the neck is a good area of the body to focus on, as major blood vessels are close to the skin. This is where a portable neck fan can help. The JisuLife is the most powerful model of this type that I've encountered, with strong airflow that made me feel significantly cooler, indoors or outdoors, on the hottest day of the year. Depending on which of the five considerably varying speed settings you choose, the battery lasts anywhere from around four to 16 hours on a single charge. Personally, I didn't find much need to go beyond the second slowest speed, as this cooled me more than enough. The higher settings sound off-puttingly loud given its proximity to the ears, and I found that they caused some unwanted vibration around my collar bones. The Life3 is finished in durable plastic which offers plenty of give to suit a wide range of neck sizes. It doesn't exactly feel 'barely there', but it's comfortable and light enough to wear for hours at a time. No other fan cooled me down more quickly or thoroughly during testing. Key specifications Accessories: Charging cable (USB-C input to USB-A source) Charging time: Four hours Features: Five speeds Rated voltage: Five Volts = Two Amps max Weight: 270g 5. Best Handheld Fan for Travel: EasyAcc Handheld Mini Fan FNHD Looking for a holiday companion? This is the one – a super-portable, lightweight fan that's available in a nice array of colours from blue to pink. Plenty of handheld fans have partially folding handles, but in this case you can fold it all the way back, which is useful if you want to fit the fan into a small storage space or blow air vertically. Cross-body and wrist straps are included, so you have ample options for carrying on-the-go. Given its compact size, I was especially impressed to feel a satisfying rush of air when I turned this fan on. Its cooling power is in the middle of the pack, delivering a satisfying breeze even on the lowest of the three speeds and a forceful gust on the highest. One area where this fan falls slightly short of its pricier peers is battery performance. It takes about four hours to charge fully and that gets you somewhere from three to 10 hours of runtime, depending on the chosen speed. On the plus side, the battery is replaceable, so you can keep using the fan after the original battery degrades (as all lithium-ion batteries eventually do). Key specifications 6. Best Handheld Fan With Strong Airflow: Bush 4-Inch Handheld USB Fan DC-0408 For the best cooling capabilities relative to price, look no further than Bush's USB mini-fan. Even at its lowest speed, this model provides perceptible cooling at arm's length. The medium and high settings are impressively powerful, delivering stronger airflow than similarly priced competitors, with broad coverage via the four-inch head. Understandably, the higher speeds also ramp up the operating noise, but the sound is pretty inoffensive and certainly beats feeling too hot. The lowest speed setting is both quiet and effective. This is one of the lightest fans of its type, feeling (and looking) like a ping-pong bat. There's only one button to master and the fan head folds back by either 100 or 120 degrees for desktop use. Though not exactly tiny, it's neat enough to fit inside a handbag, rucksack or glovebox and it could easily trade places in storage with your best hot water bottle when the weather turns. At around four hours, charge-up is not the quickest, but that gets you anywhere from four to 12 hours of runtime, depending on the setting. If hot weather is forecast, give it a top-up overnight so you have strong airflow and powerful cooling when the sun rises. Key specifications 7. Best Portable Fan for Menopause: Boots Menopause & Me Wearable Neck Fan Sold as part of the Boots Menopause & Me range, this neck fan is a great pick for when you're feeling hot under the collar and need to cool down quickly. In terms of comfort and flexibility, it's actually the best wearable neck fan I tested. The plastic has a lot of give, which makes it easy to get the fan around your neck and the rubbery surface is pleasantly soft. There's a knack to toggling through the three speed settings (you do this with a long press of the power button), but you'll get the hang of it. While the airflow is not as powerful as with some premium neck fans, I found it perfectly adequate, even without using the highest speed setting. There's good coverage from 34 air outlets around the neck, which undoubtedly helped me to feel cool faster. The operating noise is fairly loud, but most neck fans are and this is far from the worst auditory offender. Considering its good performance and comfy design, it is remarkably affordable. The only real downside is that it's not the most beautiful. It looks like it has been designed for purpose, rather than cute or fashionably high-tech. This Boots fan is Menopause Friendly accredited, so if that's your life stage, you can choose it with confidence. Key specifications 8. Best Mini Portable Fan: VonHaus 3 in 1 Rechargeable Handheld Fan 2500951 All portable fans are small, but this mini model takes the crumb. It's super-light and incredibly compact, so you might even fit it inside a large purse or bum bag. The handle is nicely shaped (for my hand, at least), with a stubby, soft-edged form that allows for a relaxed grip. This proves a better experience than wearing the fan around your neck using the lanyard accessory, which I found quite awkward. There's also a stand, so you can use this as a desk fan, perhaps even utilising the purpose-built lip of the stand to prop up your smartphone for cool, hands-free media streaming. I was impressed with the cooling power of this fan, considering its size and price. There are five speed settings shown on a digital display. The highest are among the strongest I've encountered in such a small fan, although they run the battery down quite quickly. Stick to settings one to three and you'll enjoy brisk cooling for up to nine hours. My biggest criticism is that this fan feels a little flimsy compared to some of its rivals. If carrying it in a rucksack, make sure it's at the top of the pile to avoid damage from heavy items. Key specifications Handheld fan FAQs How long does the battery typically last on a handheld fan? A runtime of around two to four hours is typical on the highest power setting, while long runtimes of up to a day or more are sometimes achieved on lower speeds. Because handheld fans are powered by lithium-ion batteries, their runtime per charge will dwindle over time as their battery degrades. Some models have replaceable batteries, so swapping them can restore this. If you can't replace the battery on your fan or you'd like to upgrade to a better model, the responsible thing is to take the old fan to a local electrical recycling point.. Are quiet handheld fans available? Yes, some models such as the EasyAcc reviewed above have quiet operation when their lower speed settings are used. This does not reduce their cooling performance too badly. Can I take a handheld fan with a lithium battery on a plane? Most airlines will allow you to take a handheld fan with a lithium-ion battery with you on a plane, but it's generally advised to carry it in your carry-on luggage, rather than in your hold luggage. The fan's battery should be properly installed in its enclosure while you travel.

Best portable fans to cool you down on the go

Summer has arrived: you're sweating through your shirt on the train, your fringe is stuck to your forehead, and it feels like someone's just locked you inside the sun. You could try fanning yourself with your debit card, but there are more practical solutions: portable fans. I'm not talking about the flimsy, noisy portable fans you once bought impulsively from a guy on a city break that barely moved any air and broke in a day. Instead, you can find quiet, surprisingly powerful and multipurpose handheld and wearable fans. The best can almost rival a tower fan, and one comes surprisingly close to functioning like an air conditioner or an air cooler. As a tech critic, I've spent this year's heatwave testing the best portable fans to see which ones actually deliver the breeze you need to stay cool and sweat-free. How we tested I tested each fan in the blazing sun, on the Tube, and on buses with no air conditioning. I've also tried it while walking outside in 30C heat, and while trying to sleep through muggy nights. I also used them at home during the day to see how noisy they were on work calls and whether they actually made a difference while I was working. As well as battery life, noise levels and how much cooling power they actually delivered, I looked at design and usability. Could they fold up to sit on a desk, clip to your neck, or fit in a bag without taking up loads of space? Ultimately, it had to feel effective outside. Why you can trust us Alex Lee is The Independent 's senior tech critic and has been reviewing everything to do with cooling your home down and air treatment since 2021. From the best portable air conditioners and air coolers to the best air purifiers and dehumidifiers, he's got you covered when it comes to beating the heat. The best portable fans of 2025 are:
