'Edmonton would cease to exist': L.A. hockey analyst pushes for McDavid to follow Gretzky's Tinsel Town path
Connor McDavid is up for a new contract and despite assurances from the most credible NHL insiders, such as Frank Seravalli, Elliotte Friedman, and Edmonton's own Bob Stauffer, that McDavid will sign a new deal in Edmonton, the hockey world has pulsated with rumours this summer that McDavid will move on to a new franchise. Article content Most of the rumour-mongering has been wishful thinking at best, hallucinatory nonsense at worst. Article content Article content But I think today we have a winner for the summer of '25's top Connor McDavid fever dream concoction, this coming from Dan Powers of the Empty Netters podcast, based in Los Angeles. Article content Article content Said Powers: 'I have said so many times — and this is not because we live in LA. — if we saw the King's Ransom Part II and he got traded to LA, it would be the greatest thing to happen to the NHL in 50 years. It would be the greatest story of all time.' Article content We'll dig into Powers' fantasy in a moment, but I'll note he's not the first to go down this path, with the McDavid rumours hot and heavy since early June. June 2: New York Post hockey columnist Larry Brooks wrote that the McDavid free agency question was hanging over the Oilers' Cup run: 'The question is whether No. 97 would be more or less incentivized to leave Edmonton as a free agent next summer, and follow the Messier Route to Broadway with or without a championship.' Article content Article content Bruce Arthur of the Toronto Star joined in: 'One of the great quiet hopes in Toronto was always that Edmonton would be incompetent enough — or would stay incompetent enough, after one playoff series in the first six seasons of McDavid and Leon Draisaitl — that McDavid, a proud son of Thornhill, would want to come home…. That dream, of course, doesn't die. McDavid is signed through next season.' Article content June 17. Adam Gretz of Bleacher Report listed possible landing spots for McDavid as Toronto, Vegas, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Boston and the New York Rangers. Article content Said Getz: 'The Rangers have $11 million coming off the books next summer when Artemi Panarin becomes an unrestricted free agent, and they'll look to move on from Mika Zibanejad's contract at some point. They could easily create the cap flexibility to sign McDavid.' Article content June 26. Some of the uproar was fuelled by McDavid himself speaking at his post-Stanley Cup loss press conference, then adding, 'With that being said, ultimately, I still need to do what's best for me and my family. That's who you have to take care of first.'

NHL injury update: Matthew Tkachuk's postponed surgery shadows Team USA's 2026 Olympics aspirations and Florida Panthers cap plan
Florida Panthers top scorer Matthew Tkachuk has left his Olympic aspirations and the salary cap plan of his team in limbo after putting off surgery on acute injuries he suffered in the Stanley Cup Final. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Matthew Tkachuk, who has said that he fought through a torn adductor and sports hernia during the Panthers' playoff championship, has not yet had the expected surgery to correct them, raising alarm for his return for the 2025–26 NHL season and the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan. Matthew Tkachuk's injury wait creates alarm bells for Team USA and Florida Panthers Matthew Tkachuk's remarkable post-Stanley Cup announcement—that he played with a torn adductor muscle and a sports hernia—only served to add to the lore of the Florida Panthers' championship run. But more than a month later, the 27-year-old winger still has not had surgery, creating anxiety throughout the hockey world. The anticipated surgery was originally set shortly following the Panthers' Game 6 victory against the Edmonton Oilers. The procedure was most assuredly postponed, though, NHL insider Evan Renaerts says, by Matthew Tkachuk's recent wedding to Ellie Connell on July 19. With the Olympic Games scheduled for February, any prolonged recovery time means missing by mere weeks critical international preparation and participation. Matthew Tkachuk Brings The Stanley Cup Back to St. Louis for Second Straight Year Matthew Tkachuk played a key role in Florida's playoff run and has been a stalwart for the team. His ongoing absence may also hamper the team's start to the 2025–26 season, particularly with the Panthers already over the cap by $3.7 million. Salary cap relief of $9.5 million would be provided if he were placed on Long-Term Injured Reserve (LTIR), providing the front office with flexibility but also sparking controversy regarding salary cap morality. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Strategic play or dangerous delay? Tough choices loom for Florida Panthers According to NHL regulations, any player on LTIR has to miss at least 10 games or 24 calendar days. If the Florida Panthers start the season with Matthew Tkachuk missing, they might get immediate relief but would pay the cost in the long run. The organization might have to trade the likes of Evan Rodrigues or Jesper Boqvist to stay cap-compliant when Tkachuk can join them. This has raised eyebrows among insiders and fans who believe that the Panthers might be tactically withholding the surgery to skew cap space. The practice has drawn increasing criticism from the league, with many notable examples including past seasons involving other superstars such as Nikita Kucherov and Evander Kane. Also read: Some of the fans went to social media to raise concerns over the Olympics, and one of them wrote, 'Interesting to see if he still makes it to Milan then. It would be quite the story if he's not there with Brady.' Others were pessimistic, speculating a timely return just in time for the playoffs—a strategy that has sparked ethics issues in the NHL's application of LTIR loopholes. FAQs

Sam Bennett pulls a Leo DiCaprio with stunning free agency announcement
SAM BENNETT SAYS HE'S NOT F'N LEAVING. 🤯 The Florida Panthers really don't have a ton to worry about given the fact that they're now two-time Stanley Cup champions in back-to-back years. All everyone should be focusing on is celebrating the win (after damaging the Cup), and it seems like that's the case. But with the salary cap come some hard decisions. This time around, that means Conn Smythe Trophy winner Sam Bennett is going to need a new contract now that he's a free agent. And you can bet any team looking for some goal scoring and toughness is going to want to give Bennett serious money. Which brings us to the post-Stanley Cup celebration. Bennett and some teammates were out celebrating at Miami nightclub E11EVEN and cameras caught Bennett stepping up to the mic and pulling off the Leonardo DiCaprio meme from Wolf of Wall Street: "I ain't [expletive] leaving." Well, THAT should calm down some of the fears surrounding whether Bennett is leaving for, er, greener pastures. WARNING: NSFW LANGUAGE AHEAD! You heard the man. He's not leaving! This should make you all happy, Panthers fans, although I feel like if your team has won a title twice, you've got a five-year period where it doesn't matter if you can keep it going.

Panthers' post-Stanley Cup song choice was an epic Oilers troll job
Panthers' post-Stanley Cup song choice was an epic Oilers troll job The Florida Panthers are Stanley Cup champions once again, and with a second straight victory over the Edmonton Oilers, they're certainly not above some trolling. As the NHL champs celebrated for a second year in their locker room, some folks noticed a certain song playing as they smoked cigars, danced and drank some bubbly stuff: that would be Chappell Roan's instant classic, Pink Pony Club. That wouldn't be so significant ... except that Pink Pony Club happens to be the song that the Oilers adopted after wins this season. So if the Panthers knew that -- and I would assume they would -- that is some high-level trolling right there. Take a look: Wow. Insult to injury right there, I'd say. And I can't imagine the Oilers are going to bring back that as their victory song, since it was sort of a 2024-25 season kind of thing.
