The event, hosted by Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) Taman Heng Guan branch, featured the nine-year-old talented performer. At the World Championship of Performing Arts (WCPA) held at Long Beach in California, USA last year, Dion was declared winner in the 'Mini Solo National and Folklore' category. At the All Division Champion (ADC), he triumphed in the Junior Ethnic Dance category. When met, SDNU Taman Heng Guan chairman Peter Moni Selat said he felt honoured and proud that Dion, like himself, is a resident of Taman Heng Guan in Matang. 'Dion has been given monetary incentives by this SDNU branch in acknowledgement of his efforts, including his contribution towards promoting Malaysia and Sarawak in particular, and encouraging him to further develop his art. 'The dance was, in fact, inspired by the traditional Iban 'ngajat', blended with the stances of the 'Peacock' and the 'Hornbill',' said Peter. Dion was accompanied by his parents, Louis Lansam and Edina Lanying at the event. The 'Little Bornean Birdie,' has been selected to represent Malaysia at the Dance World Cup Finals in Burgos, Spain, scheduled for this July 3 to 12. He earned a spot after winning the Dance World Cup Malaysia Qualifier in the 'Mini Solo National and Folklore' categories, held at the Sabah Culture and Arts Department premises in January this year. In addition to this achievement, Dion clinched the prestigious 'Best Solo Mini' title during the competition. Meanwhile, in representing SDNU president Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom at the dinner, union secretary-general Gerard Joseph said it would be imperative for all Dayak members to register with SDNU so that it would have a bigger voice. 'With 50 branches across Sarawak, SDNU is currently seen as a platform to unite all Sarawakians through social, welfare, and recreational programmes,' said Gerard. Mawan, also advisor in Sarawak Premier's Office (Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development), had pledged a government grant of RM10,000 to SDNU Taman Heng Guan. Moreover, Ooohaa Cafe donated RM10,000 to the branch. dance performance Dion Das Louis Gawai Dayak lead Little Borneon Birdie

Organisational success rooted in unity, says Sri Aman MP
Doris (fourth left) officiates the event as (from left) Susan, Angelyn, Anyi, Alice (second right) and others look on. SIBU (May 25): The spirit of unity within an organisation is the key to success and progress, said Sri Aman MP Dato Sri Doris Sophia Brodie. According to her, an organisation's strength is not solely in its membership size, but in its ability to unite toward achieving common goals. 'If we are busy fighting among ourselves, we will lose focus on the original purpose of establishing the organisation, and the development we want to achieve will be stunted,' she said when officiating at the pre-Gawai Dayak celebration here last night. Doris commended the collaborative efforts of four organisations, namely the Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) Sibu, Sarakup Indu Dayak Sarawak (SIDS) Sibu, Orang Ulu National Union (OUNA) Sibu and Dayak Bidayuh National Union (DBNA) Sibu for working together to make the event a success. She noted the collaboration among various Dayak entities reflects the spirit of togetherness that other organisations should emulate. 'I am very interested in the theme of tonight's event, 'berserakup kitai mansang, begempung kitai senang, segulai sejalai'. However, I would like to add another one, which is 'nuju pemansang' because unity drives development,' she said. Meanwhile, Doris reminded attendees that Gawai Dayak is not just a celebration but a symbol of gratitude for the hard work carried out throughout the year, especially by paddy farmers. 'Gawai Dayak teaches us to appreciate the hard work and the blessings of harvest. This is also in line with the value of unity. When we work together, we reap success together,' she said. She added the pre-Gawai Dayak celebration serves as an important platform for strengthening community relationships and demonstrating the true strength that unity brings. At the event, she announced an allocation of RM15,000 for SIDS Sibu. Additionally, Ngemah assemblyman Anyi Jana and Bawang Assan assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh also allocated RM5,000 and RM10,000, respectively. Among those present were political secretaries to Sarawak Premier Susan Clement and William Anut, SIDS president Dato Alice Jawan, SIDS Sibu chairperson Angelyn Uchi Maseng, Temenggong Stanley Geramong and Cr Sean Wong. Uggah: Tender to build Kubu Rentap replica to be issued soon
Uggah (centre), assisted by his wife Dato Doreen Mayang (second left), perform a padi harvesting gimmick to officiate the gathering. KUCHING (May 19): The tender to build a replica of Kubu Rentap in Betong will be issued in a few months time, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas. He said this project aims to tap into Betong's tourism sector, since there is now better access to the Division through the Pan Borneo Highway and other road networks and the upcoming Bebuling Short Take-off and Landing Airport. 'This project is expected to cost RM16 million for its first phase development,' he said at a pre-Gawai Dayak gathering jointly organised by the Spaoh Longhouse Chiefs Association and Spaoh Paku Madani Community in Betong yesterday. It was previously reported the replica of Kubu Rentap would be built at its place of origin in Bukit Sadok, Betong. On another matter, the Bukit Saban assemblyman urged longhouse chiefs associations in the Betong Division to play a pivotal role in preserving and promoting the Iban's 'keresa pesaka' (cultural inheritance). He said among them are the oral traditions of 'berbiau', 'beganu', 'pengap' and 'berpantun', the traditional 'ngajat' dance and the traditional' kuntau' martial art. 'Efforts must be made not only to preserve but promote them especially among the new generation. I hope our longhouse chiefs can come up with the relevant programmes in furtherance of this.' He also hoped more youths would be involved in cultural activities during the coming Gawai Dayak celebration, so they can better appreciate their cultural inheritance and prevent it from disappearing. 'These cultural activities also have their own special attraction in the tourism world,' he added. Uggah later announced grants totalling RM60,000 for the Spaoh Longhouse Chiefs Association to organise its cultural activities and cover its expenditures. He also announced another grant of RM10,000 to the Bukit Saban SIKAR Kuntau group. douglas uggah embas Kubu Rentap lead tourism
