CNN Data Chief Says This Republican Has 'Gosh Darn Good' Odds To Be 2028 GOP Nominee

CNN's chief data analyst Harry Enten on Thursday spotted how Vice President JD Vance is the overwhelming favorite to become the 2028GOP presidential nominee. 'It looks pretty gosh darn good — or pretty, pretty good — for the man from Ohio,' said Enten in a segment with CNN's Kate Bolduan. Vance — who President Donald Trump described as being 'most likely' to be the 'heir apparent' to the MAGA throne this week — has taken on a 'good fireman'-like role in the administration, one Trump ally told CNN on Thursday. Once a self-described 'Never Trump guy,' those in Trump's circle have been impressed by Vance's 'behind-the-scenes efforts to speed the president's priorities' and foresee the 2028 nomination as his for the taking, per CNN. Enten turned to early 2028 polling (excluding the current president) that shows Vance on top with 40% support, while Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Donald Trump Jr. trail behind him at 8% and 7%, respectively. Since 1980, 63% of early favorites who ran in incumbent-less presidential elections have won the nomination, Enten noted. He added that the last five sitting veeps to run for president — Richard Nixon (1960 election), Hubert Humphrey (1968 election), George H.W. Bush (1988 election), Al Gore (2000 election) and Kamala Harris (2024 election) — all became their party's nominee. 'Historically speaking, if JD Vance gets in this fight and he's the sitting vice president, the history books say, 'Hey, he's got a pretty gosh darn chance of going all the way,' at least to the general election, because five out of five,' he said. If Trump decides to get behind his veep, it could work in Vance's favor, Enten argued. At least 95% of Trump's endorsees in congressional and gubernatorial races since 2020 have resulted in that candidate winning the GOP primary, per Enten. 'At this point, things all seem to be coming up for JD,' he said. H/T: Mediaite Related... Trump names ‘most likely' successor

US President Donald Trump has suggested that Vice President J.D. Vance is 'most likely' the favorite to become his successor and 2028 Republican presidential nominee. In a press briefing in Washington, DC on Tuesday, a journalist asked Trump if he would clear the field and back the former Ohio senator as the 'heir apparent to MAGA.' 'I think most likely, in all fairness. He's the vice president,' he said, while adding that it is too early to settle on a nominee. 'He's doing a great job and he would be probably favorite at this point,' the president said. Trump also suggested that Vance could join with Secretary of State Marco Rubio – who unsuccessfully ran for president in 2016 – on a future Republican ticket. Asked on CNBC's 'Squawk Box' earlier in the day about the possibility of running for reelection, Trump said, 'No, probably not.' 'I'd like to run. I have the best poll numbers I've ever had.' JUST IN: President Donald Trump says Vice President JD Vance will "most likely" be the MAGA heir for 2028, floats Marco Rubio as a running mate. Doocy: "You could clear the entire Republican field right now. Do you agree that the heir apparent to MAGA is JD Vance?"Trump:… Trump has repeatedly ruled out running for a third term, despite previously hinting at the possibility. In April, he said his supporters were encouraging him to seek reelection, but added that it would be difficult to change the electoral rules. US presidents are currently limited to two terms. Earlier this year, Republican Congressman Andy Ogles proposed an amendment to the Constitution that would allow presidents to serve a third term, provided that the terms are nonconsecutive. The proposal has so far not gained traction.

Dem Gov Jared Polis's VERY awkward reaction when questioned about Kamala running in 2028

As Kamala Harris reemerges into the political spotlight, other members of her party are signaling that she shouldn't be treated as their presumptive 2028 presidential nominee. During a Sunday morning appearance on CNN 's State of the Union, Democrat Governor Jared Polis of Colorado was asked to share his take on a potential repeat presidential run from 2024 nominee and former Vice President Kamala Harris. The show's guest host, Kasie Hunt, asked Polis if Harris was 'the right person to be the Democratic standard-bearer in 2028.' 'Well, it's about the message and what they run on, right? I haven't talked to Kamala about what her plans are,' Polis replied, kicking off the exchange. 'I think what we need is the ability to make sure that we can build that coalition of 55, 58 percent, win, win decisively, turn our back on this divisive Trumpian era of politics and move forward with an era of prosperity and opportunity for the American people,' the Colorado Governor continued, riffing on what qualifications his ideal nominee would have. Polis then added that he thinks 'it's great that many people will hopefully run to be able to audition to see who has that voice and who's able to get that done and win and, of course, govern effectively to improve our quality of life,' without explicitly mentioning Harris, or any other potential presidential contenders. Hunt then asked Polis if he was considering a 2028 run himself. 'It's not something I have looked at. I'm focused on governing,' the Colorado Governor replied, adding that he has another year-and-a-half left to serve in his current role. Harris is attempting to revitalize her public image after a devastating loss to President Donald Trump last year. Trump won every swing state and beat Harris with a total of 312 electoral votes to his opponent's 226. The former vice president announced last Wednesday that she would not be running for Governor of California in 2026, leaving the door open for a potential 2028 presidential bid. She followed up that announcement by previewing the release of an upcoming book about her 2024 campaign. The work is titled '107 Days,' and is set to be released in September. Harris has also twice in the last week teased that she is staying out of electoral politics 'for now.' 'For now, my leadership — and public service — will not be in elected office,' she wrote in a statement on X, announcing that she would not be running for Governor of California. 'I look forward to getting back out and listening to the American people, helping elect Democrats across the nation who will fight fearlessly, and sharing more details in the months ahead about my own plans,' Harris added. The former vice president also appeared on Steven Colbert's 'The Late Show' on Thursday to promote her book in her first major televised post-election interview. Harris then doubled down on her perceptions of electoral politics, noting that she 'made the decision ... for now' to not 'go back in the system,' adding that she thinks 'it's broken.'

Rubio downplays 2028 talk, touts Vance as Trump's successor

Secretary of State Marco Rubio dismissed speculation that he could be the Republican Party's 2028 presidential nominee, instead throwing his support behind Vice President JD Vance. "I think JD Vance would be a great nominee if he decides he wants to do that," Rubio said during an interview with Lara Trump that aired on the Fox News Channel Saturday. Rubio also described Vance as one of his "closest friends in politics." He went on to commend Vance's performance as vice president during the segment on "My View with Lara Trump" and made clear he is satisfied with his current role in President Donald Trump's Cabinet. "I want to do this job as long as the president allows me to," Rubio added. Trump appointed Rubio to serve as the nation's top diplomat shortly after defeating then–Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election. Rubio, previously a Republican senator representing Florida, was among the first confirmed to Trump's Cabinet. "I believe that if I am able to be here, through the duration of this presidency, and we get things done at the pace that we've been doing the last six months, I'll be able to look back at my time in public service and say I made a difference, I had an impact, and I served my country in a very positive way," Rubio told Trump. "And I would be satisfied with that as the apex of my career," he added.
