Could Michael Flatley be Ireland's next president?

Michael Flatley has been approached by 'people in the know' about a potential run for the Aras, the dance star has said. Flatley, who is best known for his internationally successful shows such as Riverdance and Lord of the Dance, said that he had not yet made a decision about whether to run for president but did not rule himself out of the contest. 'But I have been approached by some very weighted individuals, people in the know. It's certainly not something that I have made any decision on but it does get frustrating when you see the hardworking Irish taxpayer working his heart out and having no say in things,' Flatley said.

Is Gov. Youngkin eyeing a 2028 presidential run?

RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin spoke Thursday night at a high-profile GOP dinner in Iowa, sparking questions of whether he's eyeing a 2028 presidential run. The GOP Lincoln Dinner has historically been a testing ground for a future presidential run. President Trump and other candidates spoke at the dinner in 2023, and Nikki Haley spoke in 2021 ahead of her run in 2024. Virginia Governor attends annual Iowa GOP Lincoln Dinner 'Of course, you know the Iowa caucus, the first caucus, in any presidential cycle is very important. So, this has pretty much become a staple,' political analyst Dr. Eric Claville said Friday. The fact Youngkin has gotten more prominent attention on the national level, plus his support from Virginians, all bundled with his business acumen, leads Claville to believe he is the face of the Republican Party moving forward. 'When you look at the policies that the White House are championing, those are the same policies that the governor championed here to try to get passed in his first 100 days. One of his major mantras and accomplishments of this administration was that Virginia was the best state to do business.'He said Youngkin has as much a chance to win the GOP nomination as anyone, but sees Youngkin easily among the top three GOP candidates alongside other notables.'Look for JD Vance of course, current vice president, look for Ron DeSantis probably, look for another person coming out of the Republican Party, maybe in Congress,' Claville took office in 2022 and his term will end in 2026, giving him enough time to gather support for a presidential bid.'Definitely Gov. Glenn Youngkin is one to watch.' Claville noted Youngkin also has other opportunities besides the White House. Virginia has a state Senate race coming up and Youngkin could run against long-time Sen. Mark Warner. There is also the possibility Youngkin could decide to sit out a term and run for governor again. When asked, the governor denies the claims, saying he is not looking ahead to future opportunities, but is focusing on Virginia for the time being. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Gavin Newsom makes boldest move yet toward 2028 presidential run

Gavin Newsom continues to spark rumors he's running for president in 2028 as he heads to South Carolina for a 'meet and greet' this weekend. Newsom, 57, was among the Democrats' most articulate surrogates last year, even as he brushed off speculation he was seeking the White House and made the case to reelect President Biden. Now, the Democrat governor who has spent the past month feuding with the Trump administration over anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles , has made his clearest move yet that he's testing a 2028 run. The South Carolina Democratic Party has invited Newsom for a two-day visit this weekend. He will meet with victims and communities who have suffered natural disasters and 'speak to the urgent need for federal support and investment' from Washington. In 2024, the southern state was moved to second in the nation behind only New Hampshire after its voters delivered the nomination in 2020 to Joe Biden. Newsom was also active in the state during the 2024 race as a surrogate for Biden's failed, eventually aborted re-election campaign. 'For two days, Governor Newsom will listen to local concerns, share proven solutions on jobs, health care, and rural infrastructure, and spotlight South Carolinians who are already driving progress in their hometowns,' the state party said in a press release. Newsom is considered one of the contenders for the Democrat nomination in 2028, alongside 2024 loser Kamala Harris and 2020 reject Pete Buttigieg. Trump himself suggested Newsom should run, despite having clashed with a number of Trump policies. 'I'd love him to run for president on the other side,' Trump said of Newsom in May. He brought up Newsom in a backhanded way, once again turning his name into an insult by calling him 'Gavin New-scum' while seated alongside new Canadian PM Mark Carney, at an event where Trump softened his push to make Canada the 51st state by saying it 'takes two to tango.' Trump started tearing into a high-speed rail project that California voters approved back in 2008, with costs ballooning to an estimated $100 billion . As Trump described it in the Oval Office, it is a 'little train going from San Francisco to Los Angeles that's being run by Gavin New-scum, the governor of California.' 'He has got that train is the worst cost overrun I've ever seen. It's like totally out of control,' Trump said. He complained that it's 'hundreds of billions of dollars for this stupid project that should have never been built.' Newsom was the one Democratic candidate Trump feared when running against Biden - and later Harris - in the 2024 race, according to Alex Isenstadt's book Revenge: The Inside Story of Trump's Return to Power . The ex-president worried that Biden could drop out of the race cuing a Democratic primary. Instead Biden dropped out of the race so late that the party quickly got behind Harris. 'One person he had been worried about was California Governor Gavin Newsom. Always fixated on visuals, Trump thought the handsome, hair-gelled governor was "slick" and the future of the Democratic Party,' Isenstadt wrote. Trump was also annoyed that Fox News Channel's Sean Hannity would keep having Newsom on his primetime show, Isenstadt said. But in November of 2023, Newsom debated Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who was running against Trump in the Republican primary. Trump, reportedly, wasn't impressed. He thought Newsom had 'bombed,' Isenstadt wrote. 'Ron's an idiot, he doesn't have what it takes. But I thought Newsom would be better,' Trump said at the time, according to Isenstadt's account.

Youngkin touts Virginia record in Iowa, land of presidential hope

DES MOINES — Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) made a campaign-style visit to the Iowa state GOP Thursday night — a logical first step toward a 2028 presidential run, though he insisted his full attention is focused on finishing his term as governor. 'The invitation is humbling. … It is just a wonderful Iowa trait for you all to be so warm in the way you greeted me,' Youngkin said to a crowd of several hundred as the featured guest speaker for the Iowa Republican Party's annual Lincoln Dinner. With its traditional first-in-the-nation Republican caucuses every four years, Iowa usually plays a leading role in selecting the party's presidential contenders.

Russell Brand joins RFK Jr at ‘presidential run' fundraising event

Russell Brand joined Robert F Kennedy Jr for a fundraising event last week, stirring speculation that the comedian may support the vaccine-sceptical health secretary for a rumoured presidential run in 2028. Mr Kennedy held a super Pac (political action committee) call on Wednesday with hundreds of supporters and influencers aimed at energising his Make America Healthy Again (Maha) base. Although a bid for the White House was not explicitly discussed, insiders told Axios that the call suggested Mr Kennedy is considering another run for the White House, after pulling out of the race in 2024 to support Donald Trump. Mr Kennedy was joined on the call by several speakers including Mr Brand, who is facing charges of rape and sexual assault which he denies. The comedian backed the health secretary's previous run for president and performed at one of his campaign events. Mr Brand has since grown close to Mr Kennedy, with the health secretary sharing a photo on social media in February of him holding a lizard alongside the comedian and a topless Dr Mehmet Oz, the head of the Centres for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Other prominent figures on the call were Tony Lyons, the Maha Pac leader, Robert Malone, a vaccine scientist, and Mr Kennedy's chief adviser Stefanie Spear, sources told Axios. The participation of Mr Lyons led some to believe that the Pac, a political action committee allowed to raise large amounts of money, is ready to act as a fundraising machine for Mr Kennedy should he choose to enter the race to replace Mr Trump. Mr Lyons, who is also a close ally of former Trump adviser Steve Bannon, in May became chairman of the newly launched Maha Institute, dedicated to influencing government policy on food ingredients, agricultural inputs and overall health. During the call, financial pledges were allegedly taken, but with no information given on how much money was raised and whether it will be saved up for a 2028 campaign. Ms Spear, who worked as press secretary on Mr Kennedy's presidential campaign, is said to have highlighted changes her boss has made to the department of health and human services (HHS) so far, and urged supporters to remain patient for further policy announcements. Mr Kennedy pleased Maha supporters by persuading several food companies to remove artificial dyes from their products but has drawn criticism for his decision to form a new vaccine review board that experts fear will promote vaccine-scepticism. JD Vance, the vice-president, and Marco Rubio, the secretary of state, are widely viewed as the frontrunners in the race to succeed Mr Trump. The president has repeatedly stoked speculation about running for an unconstitutional third term, with some suggesting that his son, Donald Trump Jr, could run in his place.
